  • Patricia Kuhl shares astonishing findings about how babies learn one language over another -- by listening to the humans around them and "taking statistics" on the sounds they need to know. Clever lab experiments (and brain scans) show how 6-month-old babies use sophisticated reasoning to understand their world. (Filmed at TEDxRainier.)

This video really showed us how amazing our brains are, especially at such a young age. I have learned to appreciate the process of a baby's brain analyzing language and its sounds because they were able to pay attention to it even though they're still that young. Also, the presence of parents and how they respond to their infants is one of the most important things to note when a baby tries to communicate.

The video taught me that talking and spending time with parents and other people who take care of a child are super important for how a child grows up. It's like the building blocks for a bunch of things, like being able to talk well, think clearly, get along with others, feel good inside, and understand the world and where they come from.

I think that it is amazing how children, especially babies, are. The way that babies are able to "understand" and process the words being said to them, their meaning, and the sound that is being made is remarkable. As a future service teacher, the video shows how it is important to support your child's ability to communicate in whatever way or form. It also supports your child's ability to express and understand feelings.

The video described how young children pick up language. How they recognized the languages solely on their sounds is fascinating. This video is undoubtedly essential to watch, especially if you intend to enroll in a language course since it will clarify how language is learned. The section where Khul said that infants are geniuses and can easily learn language before they reach seven is my favorite. However, after puberty, things will change. It is a good insight. Knowing this will help the language teachers to adjust and what to focus to in language teaching especially if they intend to teach primary levels or pre-schoolers.

It is amazing how babies have a different processing and adaptation of language. These capabilities only manifest in the earlier years; hence, adults won’t be able to do this. The fact that they can only take statistics when actual humans talk and not on television emphasizes how people are social beings even from an earlier age. Hence, it shows that it is important to talk and interact with babies for them to learn the language.

People always assume that the child learn their languages through hearing the sounds of the videos that they are watching. Nevertheless. we assune wrong. Children learn their first language by simply watching videos. Many studies believes that children easily learn if they see what is being taugh to them. For example, children tends to learn more if they see by themselves on a parcticular video or in person how the lips of the person moves in a specific words or language. Labs and other scientific materials also amaze me on how they study or track the understanding of babies when it comes to languages. Babies and Childrens are indeed brilliants human beings at their young age they learned si much stuff by themselves in their own little way and it amaze me on how they truly learn by not simply listening to such things but as well as by watching them.

What if after you learned enough languages you start to realise and pay attention to small differences in sound, even though you don't know it was important

The language skills of babies are not something that non-language learners would anticipate. Their linguistic aptitude is something that merits further investigation, and ideally in the future, we will be able to learn a great deal more that will aid in our understanding of the complexities involved in language acquisition.

Another misconception about babies learning with the use of videos or audios was debunked. This is such an important discovery since it teaches the better way to help the babies learn language. Through that, application of this study will be more likely to occur in households helping the babies to develop to their fullest.

Patricia Kuhl's insights into infant language acquisition, revealing how babies "take statistics" on the sounds essential for communication, underscore the remarkable cognitive abilities at play from a very young age. The clever lab experiments and brain scans she presents offer a fascinating glimpse into the intricate reasoning processes employed by 6-month-old infants as they navigate and make sense of their linguistic environment.

I don’t understand why she says it’s almost impossible for someone to be bilingual or speak other languages and sound fluent? Different accents exit. Even Americans and British people sound different and they speak the same language. English is not my first language but everyone including my fiancé (he’s Canadian) tells me I sound amazing. All my Chinese and Vietnamese friends tell me I sound fluent and I’m at the top of my class in Japanese. I speak more than 7 languages and most of them I studied after the age of 15. I’m 22 now and if I wasn’t able to understand the differences in sounds and statistics like how she says then I wouldn’t have all these diplomas. Interesting topic but i really can’t relate and that makes me wonder how accurate this is.

The closed captions were kind of inaccurate and misspelling. So can you add a transcript under the description? That would be cool.

iCrack, just go to the TED.com page and search for this video. There's excellent subtitles as well as a transcript if you prefer to just read the speech.

My major takeaway from this video is babies and children before 7 are geniuses in acquiring a second language. That's why, when preserving a language, it is better that it is spoken to babies. Additionally, babies take statistics from what they hear that's why they can acquire a second language faster than adults.

I'm partially not sure she deserves to speak up there. Please delete this video. If not, you're promoting racism. Citizens? Yeah, sure. I hate this whole speech. This only part I can applaud you for is the bilingual and having to take two sets of "statistics."

It's amazing to find out how we learn language at such an early age which changed some of my perceptions in language acquisition. Infants have an innate capacity to acquire and recognize language due to neural plasticity and this gives an emphasis to the need of a language-rich environment.

From what I've seen in the video, I realized that there is actually an explanation for why children or babies can acquire language and I find it very wonderful and informative.
