It seems to be a good year for shelling peas Nigel. Finished picking Hurst Greenshaft last week. Used chicken wire fencing surrounding the row with the top crimped over to protect the young plants from Sparrows. This then forms the support for the plants to climb up , gradually opening up the top. A simple method learnt from the most old style grower on our allotment site. Now harvesting the later sown Champion of England peas which have powered up their 7 foot high angle iron/fence wire supports and on upwards! We all seem to be adding more flowers to our plots and I also leave a few leeks to flower on the edge of a bed. I left last year's Scorzonera ("Black Salsify") to grow on and they have produced an amazing display of small sunflower type flowers.
Hi Nigel Great update mate. Did all those peas make it home. Again the weather as been not so kind to us, great harvest of beans and potatoes. Hope you enjoyed your lunch. 👍👍👍👍👍
Great tip on weeding near the onions 👍. Well that was quick work 🫣. My beans did the same Nigel except here it was so hot the flowers were dying before setting. But like yours they are doing amazing now. Great looking harvests Nigel, have a super weekend, a I 🌞🥵🇨🇦
Hi Nigel Hurst greenshaft have been very good our first time , like you have had bit of scab on Charlotte's but still tasty, Val likes your flower bed finds always gives a lift seeing few flowers on a plot, You got some nice looking onoins and peppers hopefully I can do more next season as missed lot of sowing this but that's life.
Hello both, glad you got a good crop of peas. I like the long pods on HGS. its been a testing year for many all round, just have to keep plodding on and see what tomorrow brings 😉 All the best 😊
Great video Nigel. Great crop of capsicums. I wish I could get mine that good. We have huge problems every year with Queensland Fruit Fly. They are tiny mosquito like insects, that lay their eggs by piercing the fruit with a stinger. The result is that the eggs grow into grubs and spoil the fruit. They attack most fruiting plants through the Ausie summer. This year I'm going to use fruit bags like I do with the tomatoes. Great harvest mate. Cheers
@@MuddyBootz Thanks Nigel, I've tried this before without success. I think they over winter in and around the soil. Also I just converted my raised beds to drippers so this should help. Thanks for the reply, appreciated. Cheers
Hi Nigel. Nice set of runner beans you brought out the garden. You do have a point about weeds, nutrients and water. I was worried about stacking potato pots with contents. Are rats worth thinking about doing that method? Great update Nigel? Elaine
Great update Nigel, very impressive from start to finish , I'm growing Charlotte's too but yours way better than mine lol , just had a few for tea tonight and you can't beat them can you fresh garden produce, keep up the good work mate 👍
Isn’t nature incredible,we had a cold wet start & we wondered if we would get any crops ,now we’re giving stuff away, freezer quite full,j some jam & chutney made, tomatoes still slow we have had a few, plenty are still green in the greenhouse unfortunately blight on the outside ones but we were quick to spot it so made chutney & ketchup, spuds plenty, broccoli loads, cauliflower loads as well as onions, peas frozen, will pick beans tomorrow & as for courgettes don’t go there our neighbours think we are mad, happy days.
Love the taste of Hurst Greenshaft - I grow them every year. i got fed up with picking the pods so I ripped the plants up and sat at the table doing them at my leisure LOL I'm surprised to see you weeding Nigel, I thought the new method was to leave them growing 🤣 You could save the bullet peas to sow next year.
its not all good news.... ive failed on spring onions and lettuce after many sowings. Strange year for many growers. We can also try again next year 👍😉
Hi Nigel. A very nice all round harvest, the charlottes are very good how do you get so many peppers on each plant I can only get 3 at best. Be good Wayne.
Hi Wayne, the DIT self wicking system I built seems to have done the trick. Just one weekly feed plus I can leave them 3-4 week to look after themselves 😀
Hi Nigel I've started vlogging my allotment (Allotment faith and family adventures) but I'm struggling with the microphone. May I ask you which one you use please? Great videos by the way, we watch them all :-)
I would not risk it. Originally Jeyes Fluid was listed as a garden disinfectant, however this has now been removed for recommended uses Some growers still use it to sterilise the soil. I am sure the dilution rates are somewhere on the web

Hi Keith, could you build a little fine mesh hoop house to house the capsicums? Also the the bottom water wicking seems to suit them very well 👍

I stack the tubs 3 high and then drop some debris netting over the top. this seems to work for me
All looking really good Nigel...
No matter the weather they always catch up some way or another
Yes mate,,,,including the weeds!!

Hi Jim, Charlotte are my all time favourite potato. Hoping to store them in the containers up till Christmas 🤞
@@MuddyBootz wow great , I should look into that as u have7 more 30 litre pots for my Charlotte's, saying that Nigel they may not last that long lol 👍

Some of my plot neighbours seem to have adopted the no weeding method.

Hello. I use a Rode Wireless Go. DJI also do a similar version. The battery will last all day and is rechargeable
Where did you get your bird from, my peas have been flattened by pigeons
Carl the crow was kindly donated by another viewer and friend. 😊
Can I ask you a question can you use dettol instead of jays

I grew Saxons instead of Charlotte's this year much better crop and nicer taste
I grew Saxon a few years back and tey were riddled with slugs. My go to 2nd earlies are Kestrel and Nicola. Each to their own.
