I have done this tutorial several times, and I could not be happier with it. I see a lot of beauticians throwing shade at this tutorial. I work two jobs just to get bye... I can't always afford a salon... and even when I can, they typically don't give me a lot of layers like I ask for. I have long, thick, wavy, hair, so everything costs more. I am trying to learn to get more out of my waves, and it is definitely a process. This cut is low maintenance and beautiful on my hair. Brad, I can't thank you enough for all your tutorials and all your fantastic content.
Likewise, it was very fortunate that it came out well on my long thick hair. Oh and length and now I have beautiful layers. I really think I was kissed by God! There’s no way I could’ve done this and the salon is never done my layers like this they would always look choppy for $100 a pop! This looks elegant and natural. My waves are just enough to toss it around! Glad your hair looks great too!
Same here. I've been growing my hair out for a few years and I had a lot of damaged, split ends and I wanted to have nice layered cut that didn't sacrifice too much length, but I also didn't have the money to go to salon either. So I just happened to be scrolling through random TH-cam videos and Mondo's butterfly cut tutorial popped up and I watched...and I watched eagerly, lol. Afterwards I went upstairs to my bathroom, wet my hair, took a deep breath and started cutting...and I couldn't be happier! I've been cutting my hair like this for a little while now and love it. It really is easy!
Yea actually a better way to do this is after you cut the front one, let it down, take a piece from the top infront the ear that you just cut, as a GUIDE, then use that to make the cut in the back. It will flow from front to back perfectly. But the thought process is here
I did this a few hours ago and have gotten so many compliments!! A lot of hair tutorials are stupid but this one actually works even on my long thick slightly wavy hair. Highly recommend!!
Just did this last night and so happy with the results. It made my fine hair look at least twice as full (without any product or blow-drying) and I love how it frames my face.
I am in my 60’s and I cut my hair as you show in this video. It was so easy and I had a real good pair of scissors and didn’t rush. My layers are so beautiful and my friends don’t believe me that I cut my own hair. They said it looked so perfect to be a home haircut. Thanks so much for this video.
I just did this! Watched your video as I went along. I only took about an inch off though. I didn’t want a dramatic affect, just some soft layers and a bit off my hair to freshen it up! It came out so great!!! I spent a lot of time combing and getting that division and the two pony tails as perfect as possible before cutting! Thanks, this worked super well!
I finally took your advice and did this haircut! My hair was down to my tail and I pulled it all to the front took off about 7 inches and had the most amazing haircut touched by Angels! The layers were beautiful and just in time for my sons wedding! Really I am in love! Thank you! ❤
Back in the late 90s, way before these videos, I went rappelling. I had my hair in a ponytail, but it was really windy that day, and my hair was long enough that it got caught in my circle 8. My husband's best friend came down to assist and finally said OMG! I am going to have to cut your hair. I said Just do it! I ended up having to taking his knife and cut 2-3" off. Go to the bathroom to take my hair down to see how big of a chunk it left and mentally preparing myself that I was going to have to make a call to my best friend's hairdresser bf. Pulled the hair tie out, and it fell down, perfectly layered. 😍 So, when this trend of videos started, I was not surprised with the good results. 🤣🤣Also started braiding my hair when going rappelling.😂

When I went to hair school 24 years ago, I learned what was called the ABBA method cut. You had to do the 4 sections, but you combed the sections upward from each section, and matched it with a pre cut piece on top that made the top layer length. Each section was matched to the guide from the previous one. We most often did them by scissor cut, but there were a few clients who would wan to try it with the Feather Razor. It was a quick way to get a great style and it looked fabulous!
So many things to love about this cut! It's easy to do, it keeps looking good as it grows out- you just decide at what point you want to freshen it up- and it's free! 💖💖💖
Soo my mom and I did this like 2 days ago. Cut eachother's hair exactly as the video told us to. It really brought out my waves/curls (think: 18th century wigs mixed with that Kpop middle-part hair), buuuuut the length of the back really made it look more like a shag haircut (think: 80s guitarist wearing a way to small crop top). Honestly feel like I was a 18th century grunge guitarist 😅 My mom on the other hand had exactly the perfect result. Long wolfcut with middle part feathery bangs. Very lovely, and no weird pieces sticking out behind the bangs (like I had, cause I think we put the front ponytail too much at the front. We're gonna fix my haircut a bit so it's a bit more short, so wish me luck 🤞❤ Update: We fixed it up a little, made it shorter in the back and made the transition from front to back smother. It’s like a wild wolfcut now sorta and I LOVE it tysm
@@susanagarciamata9978 (I'm not sure if TH-cam is tripping or not cause I replied to this comment a sec ago and don't see it posted, but...) That way you can see how we did the ponytails, my hair texture as well as how it changed after fixing it by hand and I can also add a pic of how it looks now that it's grown out a little?
I appreciate this. I'm not the kind of person who will regularly go to a salon and maintain a haircut. My wavy hair looks just as good with this haircut that takes two minutes.
OMG! Thanks Brad. I just followed this and I"m loving my results. Not so much layers for myself but it took off a ton of weight. And all of my tangled split ends are gone. I can't wait to dye it in time for Fall's cooler climate.
I think if it take a long time, you are doing it right. I have long thick curly hair. I am pretty sure it takes me 20-30 minutes to put the ponytails in because I have to brush up section by section to ensure the ponytail is tight and not bumpy. The smooth correctly placed ponytail is key to getting this cut right. You are doing it right! :)
Brad, thank you so much for helping me cut my own hair! I feel honestly so sexy and cute with this butterfly cut. It was very easy and quick to do. Took me about 10 minutes, and I have been cutting my hair like this for the past 2 months.
Haven't cut my hair in years and decided that today would be the day I get a haircut, but not at a salon, at home. My toxic trait is thinking I can cut hair like Brad with my swiss army knife scissors 😂😂 it turned out amazing! Giving wolf cut vibes for sure!
I used this tutorial to give myself a butterfly cut after I went to the hairdresser and got frustrated with her taking off 1/2 inch at a time, even after I said I wanted more dramatic layers. Anyway, I couldn't be any happier with the results of cutting my own hair at home using this tutorial! I had never cut my or anyone else's hair before, and you better believe I was nervous as hell, but it turned out gorgeous! I get so many compliments on my hair since I cut it!
I have curly hair maybe I should try it but my hair doesn’t grow anymore longer than it is now I really don’t want to chop it all off because it shrinks
I was just going to ask about doing this on curly hair. I have long layers, but my hair is straighter underneath and gets curlier and curlier until it reaches my crown, which has lots of shrinkage and because it's so thick and curly, it ends up looking very poofy overall, especially the shortest layer, which sometimes has the short, puffy "shelf" type look...ugh!!! I absolutely hate it and have fought it my entire life! I explain it to every hair stylist and I still end up with the same problem. Do you think this cut offers more layers than a regular "long layers" cut?
This works great on my fine straight hair. The hardest part is sectioning it out and getting the ponytails beat and smooth when you’re doing it to yourself.
I have not been to a stylist for a year because the last one butchered my hair- why am I gonna pay $100+ dollars for you to butcher it- I CAN BUTCHER IT MYSELF! But this came out so cute ❤. OMG!!! Follow the directions and you won’t be disappointed!!!!
That's how I am 🤣 I paid $200 to have my hair ruined by a stylist. It was long, and she dyed it dark. Idk what was in that dark hair dye, but it never came out. She couldn't even get it out by stripping it. It remained. I still get it cut by stylists, but not dyed. I dye it myself. I go platinum blonde, so it took some years of trial and error to not damage my hair. I had to learn about toner. Other than that, I have had good success.
I felt the same. I paid and they butchered my hair all the time. I would go home and did my best to fix it. I got good at fixing their messes that I lost the fear of messing up my own hair. After all, I would find a way to fix it, right? I now cut my own hair and haven't seen a stylist in forever. I even discovered I had natural waves in my hair.
This works. It works better for me if I do one pony tail to the front, but leave some of the back hair out of it so the ends don't get too thin. My daughter has really thick hair so she pulls it all to a front pony tail to do it.
I have naturally straight (it's so straight it's painful) hair and I got this haircut a few weeks ago. I really hated it because it was bland, in the way, and just doesn't have any volume. The longer I have it, the more I like it. No regrets.
Layered hair is literally what gives you volume but you have to style it for it to work. You can't just let it dry naturally or just blow dry it with no styling. Blow drying Your roots with your head upside down helps with volume. Then with your head back upright, use a big barrel brush at the roots and ends while blow drying. This will help give even more volume with the curl at the ends. If your hair doesn't hold curl well then you would definitely need to use products in it but even then this style still might not work for you. So many people think you can get layers and it will just naturally look this way when dry, it doesn't. If you're someone that doesn't want to style your hair all the time or you have super straight hair that doesnt hold curl even when using products then don't opt for dramatic layers like this. I have thick, wavy hair and when I was in my teens in the 90s layers were super trendy due to Jennifer Aniston's hair on the show Friends. I stupidly wanted to look like everyone else who was getting her cut so I got my hair layered for the first time just like hers. I didnt realize though that you had to style it to get it to look like this. I would just blow dry it with out using a barrel brush/product and couldn't understand why it didn't look like everyone else's. I was devastated lol. Wasn't until I became an adult that I started actually trying styling products and tools that I realized why it didnt look the same. My hair has been all one length for years now and I always just straighten it but I'm getting so bored with it. It's just to thick and heavy looking so I really want to cut it. I'm coinsidering trying layers again and getting it thinned out but I'm not a fan of the way this cut looks in the back. I'm tempted to cut my own hair only because I rarely leave my house due to severe social anxiety and agoraphobia. Last time I had it cut by a stylist was 10 years ago 😬. Brad has another tutorial showing how to cut layers in your own hair that I think looks so much better than this cut but I just don't think I can do it myself though. My hair is just to thick to do it easily. Sorry your cut didn't turn out the way you had hoped it would.
is this what you do when a client asks for this kind of cut? 😅 bc if my hairstylist started pulling my hair up in ponytails like that i'd walk- no i'd RUN out of that salon 🏃🏼♀️😭😭
I have very thick straight hair, and did exactly this… i will forever cut my hair this way! So simple, symmetrical, and my hair feels so much lighter! I do not layer my hair for the purpose of volume… but for my hair to feel lighter.
I haven’t seen someone do it with really thick wavy hair😢I really want to know what it looks like on my hair type before I do it. The women that I’ve seen do it claims their hair is thick and it’s not😅 so I’m not convinced yet.
Can u do a haircut tutorial for rlly curly, puffy and frizzy hair?? My hair is like that and I can't seem to find a haircut for my type of hair. But if it's literally IMPOSSIBLE then that's totally fine.
One time I was getting my super long hair cut and donating to Locks of love. She put it in a ponytail and cut it off. When she let it down, it was literally the best I ever looked and the best haircut ever. I didn’t have the heart to tell her that I didn’t want a haircut after that. Unfortunately, she messed it up like every other hairdresser. I guess thick wavy hair doesn’t need a professional.
I just did this to my hair and my mom loves it. She wants me to do it to her, but I was apprehensive yesterday, so the next time I see her, if she’s down, I’ll do it for her.💚
I have long thick hair and sometimes it looks like a blanket on my head but I was afraid of doing this because it's also frizzy... I did it last week and I'm obsessed rn, still getting used to it but it's GORGEOUS
The hair salon in Australia sucks they take themselves too seriously, are judging, tough, don’t know how to dye hair that isn’t blonde, and are always trying to get loyal clients you can’t walk in unless they get to know you. Also so expensive. It’s why I prefer Asian salons

I love how you say, ” oh my god look at how much layers she has!!” Like she’s an adorable puppy!❤❤❤❤
😂😂
I just did it! And it looks AMAZING.. Thank you
Omg, my hair looked so good after this!
OMG! Thanks Brad. I just followed this and I"m loving my results. Not so much layers for myself but it took off a ton of weight. And all of my tangled split ends are gone. I can't wait to dye it in time for Fall's cooler climate.
I did this yesterday and I like it! you would have cried with how long it took to get my hair into those ponytails though!
@lisablanc3551 I have the same problem! I had to make sure all the bumps were out of my ponytail. It's best to be precise, right?
I follow your tips and it came out so pretty 🤩 thank you so much for teaching me the steps
I cuted my mom's hair after watching this and that came out soo good ❤
Best haircut tutorial ever!!! ❤❤❤
I love this super simple, upbeat video. No money for the salon, so I followed these steps and it looks great! Tysm 🌈❤️
👍😀👍
Just t got this cut! Absolutely fire
😬
Brad, thank you so much for helping me cut my own hair! I feel honestly so sexy and cute with this butterfly cut. It was very easy and quick to do. Took me about 10 minutes, and I have been cutting my hair like this for the past 2 months.
This is the cut I was looking for DIY. It turned out exactly like i wanted! I love it!! Thank you!!❤
I've tried it and the result was amazing!!! ❤❤❤ Thanks a lot for making people safe money 😂 You're the best!!!❤❤❤
Haven't cut my hair in years and decided that today would be the day I get a haircut, but not at a salon, at home. My toxic trait is thinking I can cut hair like Brad with my swiss army knife scissors 😂😂 it turned out amazing! Giving wolf cut vibes for sure!
I want to see :)
So do I
Mine didn't work very well but don't worry I lave very long hair Soo it will grow back and I'll try again
Gosh I tried it trust me it's worth it! It was my first time cutting hair myself but the result is just gorgeous!
I followed his yt video on this yesterday and my hair came out surprisingly really well 😅
I did my hair this way today and got so many compliments ❤ cut several inches off and now my hair is so soft!
Did this over the weekend and looks pretty good. I prepped the SHIT out of the sections and was trembling as I cut the front unicorn pony. 😂
I might need to do this. Normally I wouldn’t cut my own hair but since I haven’t had a job since January…..
Totally a late 70's early 80's cut!
I did this cut on my curly hair and it is so cute 🥰🥰 it was so easy and my mom ended up doing it too!
My mom would get mad at me thats why i did it before but only front side because she was searching for me when i locked the door 😭
80’s vibe 👍🏻
Doing this tomorrow! My hair has always looked better with lots of layers. Time for a haircut !! Thank you Brad!! ❤
Hilarious 😂
Ive been cutting my own since i moved from the northeast to the south (6 yrs) & im doing a good job, if i do say so myself...
I felt the same. I paid and they butchered my hair all the time. I would go home and did my best to fix it. I got good at fixing their messes that I lost the fear of messing up my own hair. After all, I would find a way to fix it, right? I now cut my own hair and haven't seen a stylist in forever. I even discovered I had natural waves in my hair.
i did this and my hair is actually SLAYING rn
Tysm I really needed this! ♥️
This works. It works better for me if I do one pony tail to the front, but leave some of the back hair out of it so the ends don't get too thin. My daughter has really thick hair so she pulls it all to a front pony tail to do it.
Literally trying this in a few hours
Getting my Butterfly cut was the best decision!
Dude that looks nice
I did it last week using your tutorial and it's amazing, worked perfectly 😊
***BRAD*** YOU ARE WAY TOO BEAUTIFUL IN THIS VIDEO! 🩷💘🩷💘🩷
Is this a good cut for fine hair????
I love it, not just the technique, but the way the hair looks. I'm paycheck to paycheck, so this is helpful. And simple 👍
I have naturally straight (it's so straight it's painful) hair and I got this haircut a few weeks ago. I really hated it because it was bland, in the way, and just doesn't have any volume. The longer I have it, the more I like it. No regrets.
I have baby fine hair & live in humid always TX. Sprays and product doesn't work for me unless caked on. So long & straight for me.
It’s beautiful! Thank you for teaching us! 🥰
is this what you do when a client asks for this kind of cut? 😅 bc if my hairstylist started pulling my hair up in ponytails like that i'd walk- no i'd RUN out of that salon 🏃🏼♀️😭😭
thank you for this video @bradmondo it really gave me stunning layers. i cant afford a salon, so thank you so so much!!!
He really said the hairdressing “just one inch”😂
I have very thick straight hair, and did exactly this… i will forever cut my hair this way! So simple, symmetrical, and my hair feels so much lighter!
I do not layer my hair for the purpose of volume… but for my hair to feel lighter.
I haven’t seen someone do it with really thick wavy hair😢I really want to know what it looks like on my hair type before I do it. The women that I’ve seen do it claims their hair is thick and it’s not😅 so I’m not convinced yet.
I was taught to layer this way ..just without the ponytail lol, it looks 👍
Hey Brad I was wondering if you had any videos on hairstyles for super fine straight hair because my hair is feeling so flat and I need some volume!
I love how easy he did those sections.
I’m a barber student and I’m not quick with it yet lol
I RLLY WANT THAT NGL 😭
Is it a bad idea to do it myself?
I started cutting my own hair 60 years ago
@@fw6667 60 years!!? Your making me feel super young man
I just want to say, THANK YOU. I love it
I did this cut again today ❤ turned out amazing 😊 I watched the full video because Brad inspires me !! Much love ❤️
I followed the instructions in this video as I cut my hair, and my hair turned out AMAZING!! I've received so many compliments!!
I'm doing this tomorrow.. Wish me all the luck 😂🤞
Tried this !!!! And this was just beautiful 😍❤️❤️❤️!!! Thank you so much @BradMondo
Okay but the bandana w the blonde shaggy hair is actually so fucking cute
*This cut is SO easy to do!*
Yess love it dude!!! Great representation
When i got this done perfectionly it was amazing and styling makes it look gorgeous tysm for this!
I need that my hair is just straight...
Often once the hair is coloured it seems to hold a curl much easier
H@@jenniferjen5422 hi wdym by that
That compliment at the beginning just made my day ❤ and that haircut slays 💅
Do you think we can braid our hair in butterfly haircut??
So you’re telling me I didn’t have to spend money to look like dis(I have the butterfly cut, looks really similar)
I just did this to my hair and my mom loves it. She wants me to do it to her, but I was apprehensive yesterday, so the next time I see her, if she’s down, I’ll do it for her.💚
“Cut off a good amount of hair”…said everyone jealous of people with long gorgeous hair🙄
Did this cut on my short bob and my daughters long bob hair and it worked sooooo well I love it
