I’m a competitive swimmer and watching this was hilarious. Also she looked like she was putting in way to much effort at the end for a life guard

As you might know in theory everbody can swim to some degree. It doesn't really matter if you are old or young or what kind of body you have. It's a fairly easy sport that is also not that taxing for your body. And even with that in mind a lot of people have an irrational fear of water getting into their face or having nothing below their feet. And if they get a tiny splash of water in their face they panic, even though they can swim, they'll loose their confidence. And in their panic they waste energy and go numb and then I need to jump in and pull them back up again. That's what we usually call 'unsafe swimmers'. It happened multiple times. The first few steps shown here are mostly there to take away the fear and get them used to the water to prevent that. The biggest problem for most beginners, unsafe swimmers or people that can not swim properly is not that they are incapable of doing it. It is the psychological barrier.

Absolutely zero chance I would pass this, as a 40 year old. I cannot float on my stomach, and cannot dive into a pool without water flooding my nasal cavities.
It is not a easy test..
What ever the reasons are for you having those issues i can assure you it is not because of your age.

I would, but my sister would not. She wouldn't even be in the same area as a pool. Although my eye site is horrible, so I probably would have issues seeing under water.

I can pass the American swim test which is:
Jump into deep water
Swim to the surface
Turn around
Swim 25 yards
Stay afloat for one minute by treading water and floating on your back
Swim to the side
Pull yourself out without a ladder
Haven't been near a pool for about 50 years when it was compulsory with my school. I was the happiest person alive when I walked out of there for the last time, knowing I'd never have to go back.

Do you think it’s better to swim with goggles or without? Because I can’t open my eyes underwater I just panic when I do that. 😅
It is best to learn to swim without, then use goggles when you go to the pool.
I can’t even open my eyes when they have gotten wet. It stings so bad, the worst pain I’ve ever been in. It has gotten slightly better as I’ve gotten older. It runs in my family and my poor dad couldn’t see for an hour after his swimming lessons because they didn’t have goggles back then. He hurt himself quite bad walking into a pole. He has outgrown it almost completely now and I’m only 15 so I’m hoping it will continue to get better for me! I can swim wonderfully, I just need goggles to avoid terrible pain.

@@aliensoup2420 It has to do with the environment as well. I'm a life guard and had a lot of "unsafe swimmers". They know how to swim but they are not used to getting water in their face and they fear to have no solid surface below their feet. Then they get hit by a little wave or a splash in their face and they instinctively start to panic. The result is they exhaust their energy in a very short time by struggling or they just go numb or they start hyperventilation etc and they start to sink. And then I have to jump in and pull them up or/and calm them down. The biggest problem in swimming education for beginners and people without proper swimming education isn't a physical one because nearly anyone can learn how to swim. It's a psychological barrier.

Nice😉 Melanie should equalize her ears during diving to pickup the ring to avoid a headache. Pressure inside of her ears should be always the same es pressure of the water around her.

No, an apple watch can be used underwater with a waterlock. No worries, her watch is fine.
that seems a bit excessive as a test. I wouldn't pass it. I'm perfectly happy to just swim swim swim until i get hungry though.

For me as a trained lifeguard it it is just normal to do such things in the water and it doesn't take much strength for me to do it, but I know that a lot of people in the world don't have the possibility to learn how to swim. For these people water is a element of fear. For these people this exercises are impossible to do and if they are in the water they drown when they don't get help by a lifeguard. For this reason it is necessary to teach as much people as possible in swimming and water safety to prevent drownings. For this reason I am voluntarily engaged as a lifeguard in our lifeguard service here at our beaches and as a swimming instructor for our lifesaving association.
