    My cousin was a tribal firefighter out of Wisconsin. He was a Hot Shot and traveled all over the country fighting wildfires. He loved his God, his girl, his family, his job, and his fellow firefighters. He died in a car accident this summer. He was only 26. There were over 100 firefighters at his funeral, all wearing their wildfire gear, and his trademark red bandana.

    I dated a woman years ago who was from Idaho. I went out to visit her and met her father. He was at one time a smoke jumper. He'd jump out of airplanes into remote forests to fight wild fires. He also worked for the Idaho board of Ed traveling to small remote towns to help set up schools for the kids, helped set up reflectors on hilltops so that remote towns could receive television signals, and was a forester who graded trees for a logging company. There are lots of cool jobs out that way, but you have to like the wilderness though. :-)

    My Grandfather's neighbour (Nova Scotia, pretty secluded wooded area) once refused to put out a fire during a fire ban a couple of years ago even when directly asked by the forest fire fighting crew, ten to fifteen minutes later the helicopter dumped water all over his property,

      +FRESH PRINCESS Okay, that's a good reason. In my neck of the woods the have auxiliarys they once were called lady auxiliarys but just as many men do it as woman. The auxiliarys get together when there is a major incident. They then make food and drink and bring it to the firefighters. Maybe there is something like that around you. It's a great way to be involved. It already sounds like you're doing something like that.

    I used to work for the California Department of Forestry, unfortunately it was in one of the inmate Crews. I started out with the McLeod and work my way up to First chainsaw. helicopter rides to the top of mountains that we could not hike to tie in fire lines, there was times when we would spend three to five days up in the hills without coming down to base camp food and water were brought by helicopter, those were some fun times in my life even though I was incarcerated, then again I was young in my early twenties. there was a captain by the name of Don Stockton he had been doing this for years this old man was badass he was a mean son of a bitch but he was fair if you took care of business.

    • @Mustang6971
      @Mustang6971 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Is there a way that they allow the inmate crews to join a wildland team if they want to after they serve their sentence,it seems like it’s a good program and if it keeps inmates out of trouble and returning to jail they should be allowed to join a wildland fire team.

      Idk why He’s comfortably financially, but he seems to prioritize things. I doubt he spends his money on BS like tv subscriptions, star bucks coffee and fast food. He instead seems to buy high quality tools that last him decades so he doesn’t wast $100+ per year on buying less good boots, pants and other clothes. I know people who would be poor, but they own property. And because they own property they are way ahead of the guy who lives in a nice apartment, driving a nice car, but is owned by the bank

    If you think calling the drops is fun, try flying them. There is nothing quite so satisfying as dropping full buckets on a raging fire all day long and leaving only smoke. Doing so was one of my motivations for becoming a Helicopter pilot in the Marine Corps and my time flying gave me quite a bit of satisfaction on a variety of missions around the world. The immediate gratification of putting out fires is something special. Keep up the good work.

    As a Washingtonian, thank you for your service and hard work up here, when you didn't have to at all. Shows a lot about a man who can just pick up and leave everything he knows (& his family) to come help a neighboring state. We give Oregon a rough time, and vice versa -- but in the end, fellow brothers will come through. Firefighters are some of the best guys I know. Your channel -- over the past few months I've been watching when I can, you're just a straight up, honest and good man. Thanks for teaching my generation the things that many of us never heard or learned for whatever reason. Keep up the good work, in life.

    Seriously, though, thanks for a great video! I found your channel a couple of months back and have greatly enjoyed your work. This video takes me back to the Lexington Reservoir Fire (arson) of 1985. Flame spread a substantial distance up the slope of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Between that and a wildfire in Riverside County at the same time, 90% of the professional firefighting capacity of the US was in California. I was a Santa Clara County Sheriff's Deputy and spent the week it took to extinguish the blaze on patrol in the mountains. Intense experience!

    I made a living as a wildland fire fighter for 10 years, 1980s-early '90s. Yes, it is a fantastic job. But it takes a toll. Bad knees, bad hips, worn out back, but I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat. I started with the USFS on an engine crew on the Klamath NF, then ran a hand crew on the Shasta-Trinity, then worked on a Hotshot crew on the Eldorado, then to Alaska where I worked on the Midnight Suns Hotshots and also Chena. I fought fires over the years ranging from the beach of the Pacific around Big Sur, to as far east as the Smoky Mountains of eastern Tennessee where we burned up Rocky Top of country music fame trying to do a "controlled" burn out. I fought fire literally from the Mexican border around Douglas, Arizona, to as far north as above the Arctic Circle on the Yukon Flats in Alaska. Good times, good people.

      +Joey 2Pedals You got that right. To many "glory seeking" people who are not in it for the fun and adventure. They are in it for the "HERO" Worship. They have ego problems and want everyone to look up to them and worship them like they are gods. They think they are special because they fight fire.

    why start more fires? I'm not trying to be negative. I want to learn

    • @JamieHail
      @JamieHail 8 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      They start more fires in a controlled manor - this burns the vegetation near roads etc to use up the fuel the wildfire would use... Leaving nothing for the wildfire to spread across. It's called back burning if you'd like to read up some more :)

    Hi Cody, your work sure looks like a hard one but incredibly interesting !
    I've always been wondering (and maybe your viewers can help me with this) : how lighting small fires help you fight the big ones ? Is it to get rid of anything that may catch on fire by controlling it ?
    Thanks for the videos, keep making them !

    How many gallons of water in a bucket drop?

    • @NordboDK
      @NordboDK 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      and what is the turnaround time?

    • @drmaudio
      @drmaudio 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +cejkwo Mass I don't know about this particular one but they come in all sorts of sizes (less then 100 to over 2000 gallons) to match with the lift capabilities of the helicopter. I believe UH-60's usually carry Bambi buckets in the 500-750 gallon range.

    • @drmaudio
      @drmaudio 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +NordboDK I too would be curious at the turnaround time there. They usually dip the bucket at a nearby lake, so the distance to the source determines turnaround time.
