I've fought fires in both the lower 48 as well as Alaska, and my time doing this job has given me some of the most memorable moments in my life. From being a Hotshot to engine crews fire is what makes my day, and all the cool, hard working individuals I've met along the way

One single ant is feeble, weak, vulnerable, yet prepared to do whatever it takes to get the job done, and protect the queen, with no credit, or recognition . yet when you put hundreds or thousands together they are a force to be reckoned with and predators, or any unlucky thing to cross it's path will be eliminated. let that sink in, and ask yourself are you ready to work for somthing higher than yourself, for little or no credit just the gratification of knowing the greater good was worth your self sacrifice, and believe me you will sacrifice, whether it's relationship problems, or even just not being a kid for summer during college break. if your answer is no...than that is ok, but ifyour answer is yes, than I hope to see you out there.

Jackson Meller Not easy, but doable and largely dependent on your speciality, your location, and your overhead’s willingness to accommodate. A ‘Shot crew will be gone way more than an engine crew, but they also make more money. If you work for an agency, you make base pay while contract crews only get paid when they are gone on fires. I worked on an engine for the Feds, and was super busy with initial attacks, but my district was along the I-5 corridor in a fairly populous area in Region 5. Another engine guy in a super remote area in a different state might have very different experience. From everything I’ve seen, I’m leaning toward a non-national resource helitack crew as far as balancing work-family and still making money. Primarily used for IA’s, larger response area for a better chance of more incidents and hazard pay for more situations. Other people might have more ideas. No matter what, you’re going to miss out on family stuff and a lot of bedtimes and dinners. Be prepared for that. That being said, I’ve never felt more pride in what I do and I wish I had discovered it sooner and skipped social work which is what I did before and went to college for.
One of the most enjoyable jobs. I ever had was being on a type 2 Hand crew. Camaraderie and loving the adventure of each fire was an awesome experience all its own. U.S. Forest Service Tahoe N.F. 94-97.

Nothing in this world like a large fire at night up close, with the bobcats and deer running side by side, wide-eyed and terrified, you pulling hose for all you're worth and trying to keep it from getting burned, choking from smoke inhalation and if the wind shifts suddenly you may have to literally run for your life. They never let me work on a structure fire as it's way more dangerous than a brushfire. Two tips: they told me that more firefighters die in accidents than from fires, so make sure your driver isn't a cowboy. People's sensitivity to poison oak varies a lot, so find out if you're the "sensitive type" and learn to recognize it. Pulaskis and McClouds at the ready!

Mexico, NZ, Australia and South Africa all show up (along with several other Canadian provinces) show up in Alberta to help fight! It is ALWAYS good to see the USA show up to help! Always a professional attitude, hardly a complaint ever heard, and some of the best "ground-pounding" firefighters I have ever worked with! Have a safe summer, and who knows,...might bump into this season!

Even after my husband retired from the Forest Service, when fires season gets close his adrenaline gets moving for that call to go out on fires again. We love our firefighters.
I'm about to be a wildland firefighter in two years with my girlfriends step dad I can't wait to do this I have a passion for wildland even though I'm 16 I still have a lot to learn I'm just willing to go on the line in a couple of years

Good luck finding Wildland Fire Fighter on USA jobs. Let us be real here, you will start and most likely finnish as a 6 month at most temporary employee with the title of Forestry Technician making 10- 12 bucks an hour. Maybe you will get a Permanent position eventually and be committed for a career. Maybe you will be so broken that you have to find a new job. I wish that the pay and job title matched Urban fire fighters and all the glory they portray in this video.

Getting hired is the hard part I suggest taking introduction to wildland fire classes, and get a job with a conservation corps to stand out.
Hi everyone! I am in the process of becoming a wildland firefighter. I already got my EMT-B and my Incident Command classes taken care of and I am currently doing S130/S190 classes. I am also strongly focusing on physical fitness. I am hoping to do the academy in Arizona in March. I am wondering if there is anything I should do before registering for the academy and before actually going to the academy. Any suggestions?

Trevor Kapral you need to start out by getting your S-130 & S- 190 certifications. Go to the ranger stations in your area and introduce yourself to the fire guys. They will give you all the advice you need. Set up your account on USAJOBS and apply.
Structural or Wildland? I am a Structural FF and we just get our Firefighter 1, most of us get our Firefighter 2 as well ( Some organizations like the one i am apart of require MAYDAY! and Haz-Mat Ops.; then go volunteer and better yourself, if you like the medical side get your EMT-B/Paramedic. Apply like crazy! You got this! As for now, contact your local FD and ask when the next volunteer Academy is. You typically will have to volunteer before hire. Now as far as Wildland i don't know too much about that but i imagine it is a similar (Maybe the same) Certs, and its a summer job for the most part. Tiburcio Elguezabal I imagine they included some older clips, but a lot of the interviews were done 2 years ago in Oregon. I was in the same division as Geronimo while they were being filmed. (Top quality group of firefighters BTW)
It's hard to say it's one way or the other, since it's something difficult to measure because it's one of those things that differ based upon the individual's experiences. Given both are veteran preferred hires, but I suppose what it really comes down to is prior experiences with certain situations. Be it medical calls, campaign objectives, or task oriented actions. My best answer that I can give depends on what, if any, specific triggers on what the individual responds to.
@@ohioboy5217 same here. I'm a structural firefighter and during brush fires I don't get as amped up. Being outside and able to breathe without an airpack is what I think helps. But that's just my personal opinion. And another thing I will add is alot of structural firefighters run medical calls and car wrecks as well. In my opinion those are more mentally strenuous than your average structure fire without entrapment. So that would be another thing to add to the table in that research.
God it's been years now but just not enough just yet. My son just turned 18 and man has talked about joining ever since I can remember. Now he's here with me, signed up rookie classes done, packtest completed and man am I proud. I came from a huge back ground of family members who served as wildland fire fighters. Now I get to see my son fallow my or our footsteps into the flames. Many blessings to all stay safe and hope to see you all somewhere out there my brothers and sisters.
I only did it for the pay and the fun.....the "hero" crap is lost on me. Logging is way more dangerous but no one kisses our asses...they just bitch and moan.
Not all Fire is started by humans. Fire starts in nature as well by itself and it's normal to let some of it burn. But there is property and human life that needs to be protected so some wildfires need to be controlled or put out. That's where the Wildland Firefighters come in.

Not all Fire is started by humans. Fire starts in nature as well by itself and it's normal to let some of it burn. But there is property and human life that needs to be protected so some wildfires need to be controlled or put out. That's where the Wildland Firefighters come in.
