While stationed in Camp Pendleton 20+ years ago we Marines were tasked to help fight some devastating fires. We were given some safety instructions and assigned to some Hot Shot crews to assist in manpower. What I found amazing is how hard it is to pace yourself when you don't know what's ahead. You can't let yourself get too tired because you never know when you will have to move away in a hurry. Clearing brush and trees by hand is hard work and you're hot and tired and dehydrated all the time. If the wind changes on you and you are in a bad place you can't outrun a fast moving fire... The smell of every campfire since then brings back those memories. Outstanding work Cody... I feel your pain.

I heard the report the first thing this morning on the local news. I knew you were working the fire and you were the first thing I thought of when I heard it. Glad you're OK; of course, will say a prayer for the three fire fighters who lost their lives.

+Wranglestar Keep up the good fight, I live very near the HUGE forest fire that happened in Västmanland, Sweden last year. The smoke was so thick where I lived, we had to close all ventilations and stockpile water for breathing rags. For any and all Firefighters world wide, thank you for your courage and dedication!
Thank you for your service . My little brother is a firefighter in the Northern CA fires . I share your videos with him so he can see your experiences too. There's a lot of us that feel a kindred spirit for our fire fighters that have never fought a fire but have seen our precious forest burn . Thank you All ... our thoughts and prayers are with you !
I've decided recently to apply as a seasonal with Texas Forest Service next summer and hearing the news this morning hit me hard and I want to say for those fighters, the ones that were injured their families and all the rest of yall up there fighting the fight, you all have prayers from us down here at esd3 fire. The ache and sorrow is bottomless to their courage so full. Staring into sadness at a wound that will never be forgotten. Even now those giving three and countless others like them lift me up. I am grateful for their precious deed of no greater love

I, too, had heard about the lost firefighters on the news. My thoughts immediately went to you and your family. Praying for all those left fighting.

I love to re-watch all your wildland fire video right before the session start. They gets me pumped up and I can't weight to help my community when the pager go's off.
I am *so* glad you're ok, Cody. To me, these losses are more tragic because they were doing something incredibly brave, knowing how extremely dangerous it is. Their loss hurts more because anyone that brave and willing to help is a huge asset to society...they're the kind of people we need more of. AND, it's scary because we all "know" and love you, and it could have been you.

I cannot presume to comprehend the horror/terror of a forest fire as I am from England. 18 years ago I lost my wife in a house fire, me and my son only just escaped. So this apple is completely acceptable" My friend you have just said, with a slightly different vocabulary, what every sailor, soldier, marine and airmen have simplified to the phrase "the suck". The suck can be anything, sometimes you are welcomed to the suck (as a place) or you are told to embrace the suck (meaning tough it out) or eat the suck, while you can, cause some suck is better than no suck. Unless it's the cheese and veggie omelet MRE. Then again, you are truly in the suck if that's your last option and you are actually willing to eat it.

It almost seems like the closest you could get stateside to being back in the fight. Amazing how much we hated shit but years later I miss the simplicity.
i can not count the times my apple fell in the dirt and i picked it up blew on it and eat it, move out draw fire troop.

I live about 2 hours from any of the fires minimum and i can still see the and smell smoke in the air..these fires are so massive, it's terrifying. Thank you for sharing this, thank you for everything you've done.

From a retired LEO to some of the bravest men and women I have ever seen. Don't apologize, sir, for concentrating on your work and staying alive. I just had this video recommended to me. Being a retired LEO, I have been in some of those situations that no officer wants to be in. But I knew that if I stayed calm and followed my training my chances of survival were very high. Sometimes nature takes every chance you firefighters have away from you. Sometimes you follow your training to the letter and you still get screwed. But y'all keep coming back. You guys and gals are amazing. Thanks for what you do!!

I'm sure I speak for most of your subs when I say it doesn't matter how disjointed the video is, you are bringing us the truth of these situations and showing us something we will never be involved in. It makes us appreciate the work of firemen all over the world. In Australia we suffer from fires just like this as well and our Rural Fire Service guys are mostly volunteers too. Total respect to you and all other fire fighters.
The news services here in Australia are now carrying the story about the loss of your three fellow firefighters as we also share similar dangers during our summer.
Black Saturday 2009, Feb 7 to Mar. 14 2009, cost Victoria 173 lives and 2029 homes and burned 4500 sq. km
Thoughts for the families of the lost and injured firefighters.
Mark Fryer 4500 sq. km of forest? what type of tree, the majority i mean.
4500 sq km of Victoria, Crown Land ie native bushland with the majority of trees being of the eucalypt species, a hardwood evergreen with oily leaves that burn particularly well when dried out during a drought/heatwave. If the wind is really up and the fire gets to "crowning" ie burning in the canopy it can really accelerate and spot fires start several km forward of the fire front. I recall the story of at least one fire truck crew telling of going 100 km/h down the road and the fire overtaking them. The strong winds knocked down tree branches which took out power lines resulting in multiple ignition locations, in other places the winds caused power lines to snap or strike each other and cause spot fires.
There were also some idiots who turned up to State Forests wanting to go dirt bike riding even though fires were already burning inside. Dirt bikes are also a great ignition source to have inside a state forest on an Extreme Fire Danger Day.
The fires destroyed Crown Land/ State Forest , farmland, private plantation forests, small rural blocks, hay sheds, machinery sheds, urban fringe bush blocks, several small towns and semi rural suburbs on the edges of Melbourne.

I asked because i figured it was eucalyptus tree since you are from Australia.
I am from Portugal, where someone had the stupid idea of promoting the planting of eucalyptus trees (some lobby or someone related to the paper industry), at that time (i think somewhere in 1975+ or in the 80's) with the implication that some people decided to cut down big land portions of cork oak plantations to plant eucalyptus because it grows quicker and supposedly was more profitable, which is a lie in the long run because cork and noble woods are much more profitable in the long run and benefit a larger group of people in contrast to few people that sell the eucalyptus trees and the giant the paper industry.
And now we have a huge problem with wild fires because the eucalyptus destroyed the true forest we had, its true that statistically we have lots of forest, but for me i don't even consider it forest, its eucalyptus plantations lol. Its a plague because it grows everywhere, it consumes huge amounts of water, it dries the soil, pollutes the rivers because of the oil of the tree, it leaves lots of dead material on the forest floor waiting to burn.
So yeah huge areas burnt every year, money spent fighting those fires plus all that destruction caused by the fires cost money, and sometimes lives are lost like last year.
Although in Portugal a huge part of the fires, like 80+ % are created by people, either by accident or of criminal origin.

PedroM Nothing wrong with your grasp of the English language my good man, in fact your better at it than many whose first language IS English.
I seem to recall something about eucalyptus trees being exported many years ago, I just wasnt sure where because I think they may have also exported them to Brazil. The problems begin when plants or animals are introduced outside of their usual habitat. Australia has problems with all sorts of introduced plants plus rabbits, foxes, cane toads, Indian minor birds, so yeah we are familiar with your problem.

I returned home this morning after being out of touch for the last three weeks to find many worried messages on the phone and email that I could be one of the deceased. It's a crazy life we live. GOD Bless are our brothers and sisters out there and the family of our fallen.
This men are real inspiration and heroes.They risk their lives every day.My father and uncle and grandfather were fire fighters.Respect them for their bravery.

Cody, I've watched this video 5 or 6 times now. I think it is, hands down, the best video you've ever made. Your technical expression worked hand in hand with your heart. So emotional. So earnest.
I FELT YOU SHOULD KNOW. THAT YOUR VIDEOS HAVE REACHED ALL THE WAY UP THE COMMAND POLE. I was attending the 130 annual refresher and they showed your video about the fallen Twisp river fire victims. Fire is my biggest scare in life (when it comes to prepairedness kind of 'scares'), and i have a great respect for fire. So stay vigilent and stay safe, and even though i live miles away, your efforts and that of your fellow wildfirefighters is greatly admired and appreciated.

I know it must be tough trying to video tape while fighting wildfires, but you do an excellent job with what little time you have to do it. Thanks for taking us there and giving us a glimpse of what you go through. And I must say, I would have eaten that apple also. Sometimes hunger overrides a little dirt.

It is always a somber time when someone in the "brotherhood" you belong to dies even if you never met them you feel a sense of gratitude and understand what a great loss and sacrifice the death was. I recently re-read 'A River Runs Through It' by Norman Maclean and, while reading the short stories included in that book, I wondered whether you had read any of his writing. I am guessing now that you have based on your 'Young Men and Fire' title.
I saw in the paper about the three men dying and thought of you and all those fighting the fires up and down the west coast. No words really.
Don't worry about the nature of the content on videos like this one. I tend to expect them to be this way due to exactly what you said: you share what you can, when you can. You're doing good work, Cody.
Cody, I consider it great joy to be a member of the same brotherhood as you. I find it very honorable that you would choose to honor our fellow firefighters with this video. I think its funny, however, because, we work in the environment of potential life loss everyday, and it is easy to ignore or wash out the very real dangers we face. These young gentlemen losing a battle with that beast is an unwavering, hard, fast reminder that, even though we firefighters sometimes act indestructible, if God chooses it to be our time, we go, too. Prayers from Florida, for these young men's souls and their families they leave behind them.

Cody, just want to thank you and all of your fellow wild land firefighters for putting yourself in harms way to protect our homes and our natural resources. I have family in Twisp and I know you were up there last summer. I feel familiarity with the area and the communities these three people died trying to protect makes their sacrifice even more meaningful to me.

The attachment that a person feels under those situations is the same thing that soldiers go through after their first firefight. I would think that would make the loss of your comrades all the harder to bear. You're all dignity and grace here, and I am sorry for your loss. Please be careful.

Every time I hear on the news about those wildfires going on, I think of you and all the men and women that work to protect and control these fires. I've always known there's a lot that goes into these fire we in the rest of the country hear about, but to see some of your videos showing the incredible amount of man power that goes into these operations, it puts it in a different perspective that I've never realized until i see the behind the scenes footage. Keep safe and we are praying for you and all those putting their lives on the line working these fires, and your families. God bless the families of those three men.
