  • On December 18, 2017, I underwent a cochlear implant surgery. On January 8, 2018, I got my implant activated. It sounded very mechanical and I was very flustered/confused with the completely unexpected sounds. But I know it's a matter of allowing my brain to adapt with time, so I'm going to be patient and work hard throughout auditory rehab.

Yeah I remember everyone sounding the same lol wait until u start hearing their actual voices tune in, it’s crazy weird and so exciting. The brain is amazing. You’ll be talking quieter soon too.

It's funny how some people say it sounds perfect right out of the box, while others say it sounds like chipmunks, and yet others say metallic or robotic. I wonder if that has to do with how each place sets up the program to begin with, or how the probes were inserted inside the brain? Fascinating stuff.

There is actually also a thing called mapping which is done. Do know a few people who have had these done and they have had various outcomes with mapping on the first go whereby some have a really excellent outcome and others need to return for a new one because the one they have been given is ineffective. It is why they usually arrange multiple mapping sessions to ensure thing tend to get tweaked to optimal results too. There is a video somewhere where a guy explains this and how he happened to ask for them to go back to his old mapping as opposed to his current mapping to see the difference and consequently commented how different and poor the previous one was.

She means like nails on a chalkboard I think? That uncomfortable feeling you get when metal is rubbed together or nails slide down a chalkboard. This would be very accurate I’m guessing. If you had never heard voices before I’m guessing it would be a VERY annoying sound

Hi Krisha, sorry for the late reply. So far it's been about 2 months since my activation and though it might seem like an exaggeration, I am doing so much better now. I can understand how you feel, I felt very scared and I proceeded to do this surgery without too many expectations. Everybody will differ on how well they will do with an implant, so I kept that in mind when I went ahead with the surgery. I wasn't getting much benefit from my R side anyways so that was the starting point on why I decided to get the CI. And I can say this has been something life-changing, at least for me. On my 1 month evaluation post-activation, I had 50% speech recognition (before getting the implant, I had 0% recognition on my R ear). So yes, to answer your question, I am doing much better with an improved quality of life academically, socially, and personally. Hope this helps and best of luck with your daughter's journey!
