    Lu Xun’s “Diary of a Madman” is phenomenal. The characters and community are vivid, the scenarios are universal. Made me think of Joyce’s “Dubliners”. Great video 🙂

    I'm so happy you've brought all your recs to one place, I'm defo going to be using this regularly! I've read both sci fi stories, and I actually loved The Three Body Problem but I can see why it wouldn't be for everyone! I read Folding Beijing in a collection called Invisible Planets, which are all Chinese sci fi short stories translated by Ken Liu. The next volume, called Broken Stars, is also out this year so hopefully I'll be picking that up also!

    Yeah, finally someone talked about my favourite Chinese authors. I grew up studying Lu Xun, and I have always loved him, though some of his work made me very sad and depressed. My mother is a big fan of Eileen Zhang, and I am considering buying her the whole collection. I really love Lao She, and I felt that it was a pity he never got to finish his own memoir or autobiography, that short piece of work was my favourite. The adaptations of Jin Yong and Gu Long’s works are my favourite Chinese TV dramas. I am so so so happy that you could introduce Chinese literature to the English readers and I am looking forward to your future videos. I, myself haven’t read too many Chinese fictions for a long time, but I have a ton of historical non-fiction waiting on my shelf...

    • @TheBookishLand
      @TheBookishLand  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm so glad you liked this video! I agreed - some of Lu Xun's works were depressing and heartbreaking (a lot of books on this list are heartbreaking lol). I brought Zhang Ailing's whole collection one year after I got my red pocket money for Chinese New Year haha, her books are so great to read. I actually only read one Jin Yong (Legends of Condor Heroes) before because I was intimidated by his historical aspect, so I read all the Gu Longs I could find in my high school library and got entertained by Gu Long's stories haha. But I found now I'm ready to read more of Jin Yong. Thanks again!! If you found any good Chinese books (including fiction and non fiction) please let me know ❤️Happy reading!

    Good video, I ve a question what about Investiture of God 封神演義, Fēngshén yǎnyì ? I know it is not one of the four great classical novels in China but it deserves to be under the spotlights. I think is so sad that this title is not mentioned on youtube for Chinese literature (or it is rare). It is beautiful and well-known in China with its live adaptations. It was created during Ming dynasty (same period as journey to the west with sun wunkong). : (

    Hello. I have been learning Chinese for almost 3 years and recently I wanted to start reading Chinese novels, so I appreciate this video very much.. And I am gonna start with Eileen Chang and see how far I could go with the original Chinese. However I was wondering if you could recommend some interesting Chinese children /YA novels? ...they don't have to be translated in English.
    Thanks alot for your efforts.
    Would appreciate more videos about Chinese novels

    • @ZanplusFeliks

      Knowing that you have been learning chinese, I would recommend 郑渊洁 and 曹文轩s' books, if you are intriguing about children animals novels, 沈石溪's novels literally will
      be a best option. However, nearly all of the writers' book have no English translations, but it's surely own easy vocabularies and simple description, accompaning myriad children's childhood. I think you can have a try on it whatever chinese words you have already mastered. Those book that I mentioned are effortless to find.

    So interesting to hear you say that about Three Body Problem!
    I also got kind of mad at it. I think it was the characters motivations?
    I thought maybe it was just because i’m not Chinese and i was missing finer points or context but maybe not!
    Also, Lui Ken is fun! I didn’t really like the roles he gave female characters in the first book of the Dandelion Dynasty, but as the books go on this changes, and it becomes more obvious why he did it the way he did.
    Thank you for your work to make this great video! I’m exited to read some of these.

      @TheBookishLand  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ohh thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on Three Body Problem, and yes, the motivations of the characters are soooo messed up, I can feel you! Also I didn't like the flat writing of characters especially female characters, ugh, still frustrated with the book after reading it for more than 10 years LOL.
      Oh I haven't read much of Ken's books since I'm not a big fantasy reader, but I heard so much good things about his writing and always wanted to try! I'm glad you found this video useful!

      I’m glad you loved it! I heard the English translation version is a lot better, but I just can’t bring myself to read it again lol

      I read it in Italian actually, but I just checked and the translation is from the English version, so again looks like they made a good job there in the first place!
      I think it depends a lot on your background... I studied physics at the university, so I guess I really appreciated how realistic and original it is for being a sci-fy novel

      haha I didn’t know there is an Italian version! I didn’t have a problem with physics and I think the science fiction setting is good. I didn’t like the flat characters especially to female characters and the misogyny tone of writing them. But it’s just my personal take and I have friends who love it too :)

    Thank you, for I love Amy Tan's books, but I read all ethnic groups. The more we are different, the more we are the same.

    Which Chinese (in English) would you recommend that are taken place in China during the 90's or early 2000's?
    I have bought 'Brothers' and 'China in Ten Words' by Yu Hua, but am looking for a few more by different Chinese authors.
