    When I was at home with my children, I did not reflect on what advantages we had as Swedes. Now I have been well aware of it for many years. My wife and I were able to stay home during our children's first year plus 5 weeks of vacation during the summer. When they were just over a year old, they started at the "preschool". Our children were born in 1979 and 1982.
    However, these benefits have not fallen from the sky or just arisen by themselves. Our unions and left parties have pushed the issues. Often under opposition from bourgeois parties. Particularly hard at the beginning of these reforms.
    Political propaganda of me? Sure but also facts, can be checked.

    I was a singel parent since my son's birth 1990 and I was ever so thankful that I could stay at home for a year and a half before going back to work. And thankfully had 5-7 week of vacation. It's been tough all those years but doable. I can't imagine how stressful it could have been otherwise.

    Hello and regards for UK! what a great informative video - thank you :D . I am considering moving back to Europe - Sweden most likely. I am a single mother (polish ) and have 6 years old daughter ( english - polish citizneship ). Since it is difficult to find informations here on YT, I was wondering if you kindly be able to point me to the content for single parents wanting to relocate to Sweden, please? Or maybe you have one, or would like to record it for us? Much appriciate your help and time - thank you, Dominika

    When I was (far) younger, I enjoyed my work so much that I left 10+ days of holiday each year, which got accumulated. Then eventually my manager wanted to have a serious chat with me, and it turned out to be about my accumulated leave. I was pretty much forced to stay away from work for almost 3 months. I had my company car and I spent most of that time just driving and travelling around all of Sweden (including a 10-day trek in the mountains in Lapland), which enabled me to see most of the country and really appreciate it.

    In Sweden, according to the School Law, all children have the right to preschool from the age of 1, ie the day they turn 1 year old. Not before that. You don't pay for nappies every where. It's up to the municipality (kommunen) or the private school to decide whether the nappies is for free. They often are. The year that a child turns six, he or she begins in "förskoleklass", in primary school. When the school day is finished most of the children stays in school in Fritids (Fritidshem). There they can stay until their parents picks them up after finished work. Fritids is even cheaper than the preschool fee. I am a preschool teacher by the way ;) About vacation, I had 25 days and when I turned 40 I got 6 more days, 31 days. And then I turned 50 and got one more day so now I have 32 days of vacation every year. That is very common here in Sweden. If you are a government employee you have even more days. After turning 40 you get 35 days every year. A Swede have the right to have 4 consecutive weeks vacation between June-August. According to the Holidays law (act?)

      yes. if u just count up the weekdays i often take 5 weeks (25 workdays) vacation during the summer and save another week for christmas - where there are several bank holidays anyway. im 43 years old, and work as a chef at a council day care centre. A bit of a shame here is that if a "bank holiday" (röd dag) happens to land on a weekend, you dont get that extra day off if you only work monday to friday

    If a country has content, healthy, well educated citizens they will work and pay taxes. And taking care of families is a very clear investment for the future for the country as a whole. And I think a lot of us who grew up in Sweden takes that for granted and find other countrys who doesn't do this really really strange! ;)

    • @BeingSwenglish
      @BeingSwenglish  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed, other countries struggle to keep up with Sweden in regards to benefits. But your first point is very important, Sweden needs to ensure that it polices its borders to avoid the "well educated and working" population being polluted with arrivals whom do not want to work, pay tax nor be educated.

    with the long summer break that school kids have in sweden , 10 weeks - its really important for parents of young children to be able to take days of work aswell. Ofc, not all co-parents has the ability to take vacations back to back or at the same time - so there is often the additional choice of after school programs (fritids) for the children during the summer. All of these rights could change in the future thou, why i think its so important to vote

    There has actually been a court case about the nappies in the förskola/kindergarten, and Kammarrätten (Court of Appeal?) made a verdict saying that no parent should have to pay any additional costs to have their kids in kindergarten, for nappies for instance. The Högsta förvaltningsdomstolen (Supreme Administatiove Court?) agreed. But some of the municipalities and regions still don´t want to take that cost, even if they legally have too.
    For instance, in Stockholm, Karlstad, Gullspång, Lidköping, Salem, Karlsborg, Nacka, Huddinge, Grums, Boden, Härnösand, Norrtälje, Lindesberg, Norrköping, Lidingö, Nynäshamn, Falköping and Nykvarn the municipalities supply the nappies without any additional cost for the parents, but some other municipalities still don´t.

Have no children but I'm absolutely willing to pay my taxes to provide the system for everything your video's about. In a society we have to think about the whole thing and not being selfish to get individual benefits. This is all about building a sustainable society. If people feel good it benefits al of us and the whole community. Lovely video btw, nice to see you walking around with all the greenery around you :)

    Great video!! Couldn’t agree more!! We are so extremely privileged here!! What pains me is that Sweden has become more closed to immigration these past years. It no longer matters if someone with a different nationality falls in love with someone with Swedish citizenship and has a child together in order to stay here. It’s getting very difficult and splitting families apart. We are great in so many ways but one thing I really feel ashamed about is just how much support these anti-immigration trends are getting. Great video once again. 👍

    I have never taken 5 weeks off in a one go, 4 weeks have been the maximum. I like to go skiing, so my 5th week ws usually sometime in Feb-March.
    It is true that you might get 6 weeks of vacation IF you agree to not get paid for overtime. I don't like that concept: If I work extra hours I want to get paid for it and if I don't then I should not get paid either!
    Off topic: Where was that coastline at the end? Living in Scania myself, I feel that I should have recognized it.

    There is a reason why the UK is considered the worst place to bring kids up in, in the western world. I live in the south of England and have done various jobs driving around my home town and other areas. What I have observed is the UK is not a clean country and people in general here don't care about one another or their environment. Most people seem stressed out, over worked and unhappy. Teenagers spend their time sitting in what few parks we have smoking cannabis. In most UK cities knife crime is riffe and teenagers stab eachother to death. London has the highest number of acid attacks in the world. All the jobs I have done have paid the bare minimum despite the cost of living being so high, so can't afford to do things. I have always said I will never want to bring kids up in the UK for all the reasons I have just said and conseqquently I have took upon myself to make sure I never accidently father a child by being sterilised. The UK is so over crowded and people are living on top of one another so animosity is riffe. The UK is just a horrible place.
    I would love to leave the UK because it is finished. I know colleagues who are paying a fortune for rent, child care etc and having to work 80 plus hours a week and still have nothing to show for it. They are sadly not seeing their kids grow up because they are always at work. The quality of life and standard of living in the UK for the average person is generally quite poor. Many places in the UK are no go areas.

    Great video about benefits in sweden.
    But why all those benefits for parents?
    Its becuse we need to preserv our workforce.. both parents supose to work (and paying taxes) and get a career, gender equality is altso importante. (you know femals vote to)
    Now a question, they say that Sweden and other Nordic countries have the higest femal participation in the workforce?
    Then one need to provide service for parents.
    Soo to the bad thing in Sweden.. you have to work and pay taxes, to get those benefits!

    • @BeingSwenglish

    Is there a disconnect with regards to safety in Sweden? If we are discussing how great it is for kids and parents. Shouldn’t that include safety? That’s my primary concern if I am going to relocate. I see news about shootings, hand grenades, gangs, segregated neighborhoods with growing criminal elements, I’m sure you get my point. Is the solution to pay more for a Swedish neighborhood/school and bury your head in the sand? Excuse my frank comment but my daughters safety is my primary concern.

    • @crypticlish6717
      @crypticlish6717 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know this an old comment but it was never answered so I'll swoop in. There's a lot of right wing propaganda on these issues (especially the grenades). Maybe don't move to places around Stockholm like rinkeby just like how I won't be moving to London to raise kids because of the gangs there. Shootings are gang related (and the gang problems come from poverty and segregation so its an important topic politically) and aren't happening constantly or everywhere, plenty of safe places in Sweden. You're daughter is safe unless you chose to move her into a ghetto with high crime rate as is the case in virtually every country on earth.

    • @BeingSwenglish
      @BeingSwenglish  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for the late reply, but Sweden is no less safe than any other European countries. If you live in a ghetto, then you'll find yourself amongst dangerous neighbourhoods and people, that applies regardless of which country you live in.
