  • This video will show you how I level a lawn to make it look flat. This will help to take all the bumps out of the lawn. This is a slow and long term process that if done yearly can make your lawn look great.

    I was all in...made the drag and put down 45 yards of sand. It needs to be done again, but the wife says Noooo. I will wait until next year! It was a very noticeable difference! Thanks to the best how-to channel on the TH-cams!
    You differently want to use a Gorilla cart, my cart was horrible. When it dumped 3/4 of the sand stayed in, so had to shovel it out.

    I plan on doing this once the lawn dries up a little more, I live in Ontario, Canada. I'll be using a sub-compact tractor with a box blade and two wooden skids screwed together. The two skids side by side worked well with pulling around the yard before the initial seeding. Hoping to get the lawn nice and smooth over the next couple years. Great videos, thanks for sharing!

    I occasionally do this sort of work with my super garden tractor and loader. And even just back dragging a four foot loader bucket on float over the sand makes a tremendous difference! I’ve even used dirt or clay and it has helped fill in ruts really well. The Bermuda here grows right through anything less than 2 inches thick. Love it.

    Connor - I've seen several of your videos about leveling but this was the best one because it was so informative about what to do, what not to do and why. Don't know if I'll use sand to level my yard because the dips/low spots are fairly significant at this point. Going to try highly screened top-soil first and just bought the leveling rake. Hope it works well!

    I did this whole procedure for the first time yesterday with about 5-6 tonnes of sand. As I spread the sand and it started settling, it also revealed a lot of small pebles, so I'm sad about that, but hope it wil be fine. Next time I gotta get some better sand and a motorized solution for transport (I did the shovel/wheelbarrow and you're right, that was hard work).

    Great informative video sir. I listened very carefully and read all comments. Has anyone done this on TTTF? The closest I could mow is 2 or maybe 3 inches due to all the bumpiness. Naturally, I have the universal fear of killing the lawn so I’ve been standoffish on this so far and I think Pete is the only Lawn guy with TTTF. Thanks to all, you guys are great!

    I had to use 25 tons for half my yard. If you’re like me and rehabbing warm season, not with an awesome yard like yours the sand is going to run around after leveling. It needs the turf to hold in place too. Love the videos. Your yard makes me more jealous than anything that not a golf course. Love the channel, love the mowers, although I think my toro 3550 might make you a little jealous. Keep it up. Great yard, great channel, great content that’s also funny.

    I really thought you killed that guys lawn on the first time when you turned it into a beach. Good to see the progress. Fall of 2019 I killed my lawn, rototilled 4" of mushroom compost into the first 8 inches top soil (no sand), then leveled with a level lawn rake and rolled it, and planted KBG. It's only about a 1000 sqft. Looking good so far, but definitely had some frost heave (even with a mild Boston winter) and critters digging around hasn't helped. It's got some shady spots, so I'm over seeding again this spring with KBG and mixing in some fine fescue. Plan to add a 50/50 mushroom compost/sand top dress this fall with about a quarter inch application. These videos and Ryan Knorr's videos have been incredibly helpful and inspirational. My wife says I'm addicted!

    Almost completed spreading 10 tons of sandy loam with 10% compost mix over 1000m2. Just 150m2 to go.
    Screened to 10mm which was a bit stoney. Shovel, wheelbarrow and a landscaping rake. Absolute monster task over the weekend. Probably 1 evenings work remaining.
    Seeding this week and then the waiting game begins...
    Next year will stick to a screened 70:30 topsoil and sand mix and probably only half the amount required.
    Thanks for the inspiration!

    I did this in the fall but I used topsoil instead of sand. I was doing it in conjunction with an overseed/renovation, so I was raising the yard several inches in some areas. I used 4 yards of Topsoil on a 1500SF front yard and still didn't have nearly enough to get a perfectly flat finished product. In the end, it looks so much better than previously but it might take another entire renovation to level it enough to where sand could be used for fine tuning.

    This is the most informative video I've watched on leveling a lawn with sand. You've answered a lot of my questions but I do have one more. Does it have any adverse effect on your pre-emergent barrier? If any weed seeds get on top of the sand would that be a problem or will it die off once the root tries to go deeper and reaches that line?

    • @colinseaberg6275
      @colinseaberg6275 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would be preferable to apply the sand topdressing and work it in before applying the pre em applilcation. However due to any reason the sand topdressing could not be completed before the optimal timing of the pre em application, make the pre em application. Usually, there will be minimal if any weed seed in the mason sand mix and any small amount of weeds could be easily taken care of with some spot spraying of post emergent herbicides.

    Levelling my lawn this spring up in Ottawa Canada. I’ve been searching for golf grade sands (70/30 or 80/20 - sand/peat moss mixes approved by USGA) but much harder to get my hands on in smaller quantities. Love the leveling aspect of using sand, which is what I need for my lawn. Is it best to do after aeration?

    • @dchall8
      @dchall8 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      NO! Yes, I was shouting. First of all, aerating is not necessary (probably ever), but if you get any clods of aerator leftovers in the sand, you'll never make it level. Clods from soil or aerating create furrows behind the drag that require more work to get out.
      If you thought you needed to aerate for some reason, try using a surfactant spray instead. Give that 3 weeks to work and you'll feel your soil softening. Use the screwdriver test to be sure. I used baby shampoo at 3 ounces per 1,000 square feet once back in 2012 and never needed it again.

    Next time you top dress, look into a cocoa mat. (Baseball field groundskeeping) Drag it after the metal drag for super smooth results.

    Any ideas on how to make a hand drag? I have (2) 400 sq ft lawns, planning to do a section at a time. Thanks!

    Does the sand affect your sprinkler heads (like clogging up)

    I have like 4-5” deep rut like runs where the sprinkler system was installed as well as some pretty big hole like low spots. How should I tackle those befor I begin a sand or leveling process?

    What are your thoughts on doing a compost/sand mixture? My lawn needs severe help both in nutrients and leveling.

    I am planning on doing this in the fall at my house. What recommendation would you have as a rate per 1000 for a lawn that needs a decent am out of leveling? Also any recommendations of where to get the sand from in Davis County or SLC county?

    Hi Connor, would you use spring pruning wood ashes to level lawn holes and humps? then cover it with a very thin layer of soil. Do you think it would work as well?

    Did it for the first time two summers ago. 3 tons for 3000 sqft. The before / after was amazing. A good landscape rake makes knocking down the piles much easier. Plan to do it again this Spring with leveling rake.

    So my yard is like rolling hills lol. So It's impossible to level with sand. But I was wandering if the sand leveling is good for all grass types? Specifically saint augustine. I guess it's still good though since there are many smaller spots. Some 4 or 5 in deep.

    My lawn is very uneven -- holes, sinking along buried irrigation pipes, you name it, and patches of different grasses to boot. I can't mow it lower than 3" without scalping down some areas to the roots. I guess it's gonna be a multi-season project. One objection to sand only that I heard is that it heats up and may damage the roots. I also live in Utah, so you know how hot it gets in July/August.

    What do you suggest for large holes? My yard as dug up to replace gas lines and they had to take out large tree roots. Well it’s left me with deep holes in large patches. Should I use soil then sand over time after it grows.

    I did my lawn and the only thing is that it wasn't screened and I didn't screen it so now theres a lot of rocks in the lawn, I'll do it again and make sure its screened and see what happens! Thanks for the tips and tricks
