I used to hate on Modern controls and Modern Zangief. Then I tried Modern Zangief, and he has a ton of limitations. You have to be perfect with your timing all the time and your limited move pool reduces how much you can mix it up.
However learning it has been extremely rewarding as a newer player. Even though I use traditional controls for everyone else, my injured thumbs can't do the 360 Gief spins lol
I rather fight a M Gief than a M Shoto, they just sit there an wait for you to jump no other offense.
In those situations, the way to counter that is to play in and out of the range of their normals. Walk in and hit them low if they aren't blocking low, or whiff punish them. If you play the fireball/jump game, that's a losing strategy. That's when you overwhelm their mental stack and then you can start jumping in on them at whiff punish distance, because they are focusing on blocking low/not getting hit by stray pokes or whiff punish buttons.
This also applies to Guile, Luke, etc. Those with fireballs.

I personally hate fighting gief. He’s too gimmicky and I hate when they pretend they’re gonna do a combo only to stop and command grab. Just feels cheap.

Back dash or just simply jump. Learn his patterns and switch up what you’re doing. SPD is a 5 frame start up and has massive recovery frames if he whiffs which mean you get a massive punish. Step your game up and learn counter play.
