I think it's robotic, watch the guitar player in the background as it's being built, he crouches down a couple times, as if he's using some sort of controller.
Saw the same show in England in 1986, NO-ONE could work out how he got that monster to come alive. I was 4 rows back, and it blew my mind how it was done. Far better than the guillotine part of the show!
I've watched this video over and over and it leaves me scratching my head how they got that monster to come alive and the when he pushed it over there was nothing!!!! I was at this show too where I live and it will always blow my mind.
Constrictor is the ninth solo studio album by rock musician Alice Cooper released on this day September 22nd1986. After a hiatus from the music industry after the release of DaDa, Cooper remained in seclusion for three years. He starred in Monster Dog, a horror film for which he wrote two songs. He also guest starred on the Twisted Sister track "Be Chrool to Your Scuel". Constrictor was Alice Cooper's first album to feature Kane Roberts on guitar, Kip Winger on bass, who would later gain fame with his own band, Winger and the only one to feature David Rosenberg on drums.
I’ll never get over the fact that Alice had one guitarist who was built like he was one week out from the Olympia, and another called Guy Mann Dude. And they were not the same person.
I saw the tour live 30 years ago and to this day even seeing it live and watching the video over and over, I still to this day have know idea how the monster came to life. I know someone's in it but the secret is still alive today how it happened.

My 1st concert was Alice Cooper. The opening act was a little known band called AC/DC fronted by Bon Scott. Alice is going to be in concert near here soon. Maybe I should go reminisce...
I try to make every tour...( even though I don't) seen him about 20 times over the years....BUT...I saw the J. Geils Band in Indianapolis at the convention center...maybe 1,500 people...U2 opened lol

@Skulldini In terms of being in the pop music world. yes Beiber and Jackson are in the same category, but both Jackson and Cooper are legends and are in the hall of fame, Beiber hasn't even gotten his feet wet, so to speak. Let's see where Beiber is 10 to 20 years from now before we mention him in the same breath as Jackson and Cooper.

The instrumental middle section here is obviously a metalized version of his song Steven". Unlike the other songs that were metalized on this tour, this one is almost completely unrecognizable. Probably the only reason why it wasn't played in full.. But glad they played it anyway. It's The Nightmare Returns after all..
I used to have this "Nightmare returns 86'" on VHS back in the day, and even the video quality wasn't the greatest on it to begin with. Was a fun one to watch though...
This ain't the uploader's fault. This is what the audio from this gig sounds like, on all releases of it. This song in particular has more sound issues than the rest of the gig, too. This footage was originally aired totally live on MTV, and all releases of it used the untouched audio from the broadcast.

This is from Alice Cooper the Nightmare Returns. The DVD is available on Amazon & ebay. This show was from 1986 live in Detroit Halloween night and on MTV live feed. I've got several copies so if you have any issues holla back. Sorry it's taken so long to get a responce.
I was lucky enough to see him (1st concert) on the original "Nightmare" tour in the mid 70s. The tour was HUGE. He was a very big deal back then. Sold out arena shows all over. I thought the Nightmare Cyclops was so cool. But the Frankenstein illusion is something else. Great looking monster and a sweet illusion. "Killer" and "Billion $ Babies" are still 2 of my favorite lps of all time.

because in my opinion, that is one hell of a magic trick !!!!
I am a Magician and I can attest that that was a good Magic Illusion.
This part is the main reason why I love this live rendition.
Always loved this stunt
