Queen were in their studio in Switzerland when David Bowie dropped by. They started jamming, and John Deacon just came up with that base line on the spot. They took a break for lunch (pizza), came back to the studio to work more on the song, but John had forgotten the base riff. Luckily, Roger remembered, and the rest is history. Please do the live version at Wembley!

The high notes are Definitely Freddie!!!!!!! Queen was recording in Montreux, and David was at the same studio. They were all hanging together in the same studio just jamming and decided to record a song. So many great back stories about this on TH-cam! And yes, Vanilla Ice lost big time in court. His defense was laughed at by the court, papers, and fans! This song is so much better live!! You have got to do more live stuff!! Queen live, no matter the song, will blow you away!! Try this song live at Wembley, and Please do White Queen at Odeon Hammersmith!! Thanks!

Vanilla Ice came out with "Ice Ice Baby" over ten years after Under Pressure was a big hit for Queen. So when he ripped off Deacon's bass line the band was not as upset as you might have thought. According to Brian May, "Ice Ice Baby" brought a whole new level of interest to "Under Pressure". Along with that interest came a lot of new record sales. Since they were making a lot of money from Vanilla Ice's rip off they were not really upset but they also knew that if they let him get away with it there would be others that would try to do the same thing so they filed a law suit against Vanilla Ice. Vanilla Ice is not the brightest bulb in the pack and he thought that because he changed one note, he would not be found guilty of plagiarizing the bass line of Queens song. The law suit was set to go to trial but fortunately for Vanilla Ice someone from his management company finally talked some sense into him and made him realize that if it went to trial, he would lose. He would lose BIG! So they settled out of court for an undisclosed amount of money. The terms of the law suit specified that the amount Vanilla Ice had to pay to Queen remain undisclosed so I have no idea how much money he had to give up but based on the other parts of the settlement, I don't think it was a bankrupting amount of money. It turns out that Queen really wasn't upset. They were actually quite generous to Vanilla Ice and they specified in the law suit that he could keep using the bass line in future performance's and remixes (if he ever released a new version) with the understanding that he had to give Queen and David Bowie writing credits. Since that law suit, anytime "Ice Ice Baby" has been published in a new music compilation the credits list Queen and David Bowie as the writers and credit Vanilla Ice for the vocals. They didn't insist that he share any future sales profits with them. Considering that they could have taken everything he owned from him, he got off very lucky. By that time though, Queen had made more money than god and whatever they had gotten from Vanilla Ice wouldn't be a big deal to them. The major karma points they got from the man upstairs for letting Vanilla Ice hold onto a little bit of dignity probably far out weighed the money that they did not need in the first place.
When they were at the studio in Montreux Switzerland recording this with Bowie, Bowie and Freddie had a contest going on to try and out do each other with their vocal abilities. They were each recording their own parts in separate studio's within the complex. Freddie was going really high up in his vocal range because he knew that Bowie could go pretty high and he did not want Bowie to out do him. So that long "why" that just kept rising into the stratosphere is Freddie pushing himself to his limits. I have a copy of the acapella vocal tracks for this song and to hear Freddie hit that high note without instruments drowning out some of it will make you believe that anything is possible because I would have never believed that a man could go that high (almost dog whistle high). Hell, there probably isn't very many women who could deliver that note.

Here's a little trivia. Freddie and Roger had a booth in Kensington Market where they sold or at least attempted to sell old off the wall clothing to try to make some money; obviously this was very early. They knew each other before they became Queen. Roger was still with smile. Well anyway Freddie needed to make some money so he started working for someone in the Market that sold shoes and he actually sold David Bowie a pair of boots; well actually he gave them to him. Then years later they end up doing a song together. Life is so awesome

The back story is: Freddie and David became friends a long time before either of them were successful. Freddie and Roger (Taylor,) had a booth in the Kensington Market where they sold "vintage" clothes to make money to eat. One day Bowie stopped by and fell in love with a pair of boots. Freddie knew who David (he liked his music) and David knew who Queen was and liked their music. They started talking. David couldn't afford to buy the boots so Freddie just gave them to him (that's the type of person he was).
Queen owned a studio complex in Montreux, Switzerland and they were there recording their album. John Deacon (bass player) has come up with this riff and keep playing it while they working. The whole band agreed it was a cool riff but it didn't fit into anything they were currently working on.
David Bowie, who had a house in Montreaux, popped into the studio where Queen was working just to say hi. They all started talking and, jamming. After while they all decided to go out to dinner together (pizza) and while at dinner they decided to all go back to the studio and just see what they could create together for fun.
Someone suggested using John's riff as the starting point. Sadly, John couldn't remember it but luckily, Roger remembered.
Everyone began throwing out ideas and just trying stuff when David went into another studio and began laying down some lyrics. Freddie, who was known to be a bit competitive, followed him and stealthily stood in the doorway listening. After a few minutes, Freddie ducked into a different studio and began recording his own lyrics in response to David's.
Then David, who was also competitive, stopped and listen to what Freddie was singing and responded to that. The rest of the band saw what was happening and decided to let those two work out the lyrics while they concentrated on the tune itself. All tracks were laid down that night for both the lyrics and music.
Freddie arrived at the studio the next morning, with the idea to start working on mixing the song but when he got there, he found out that David had already mixed the song. When Freddie hated what David had done, he hated it and the two of them got into a major squabble. Finally, they worked it out and the song Under Pressure (original title was People on the Street) is the result.
The Vanilla Ice story is this: Before Ice Ice Baby, no rap song had successful enough to make any real money. Vanilla Ice figured that n Queen / David Bowie probably would never hear the song and even if they did, it wouldn't be worth their trouble and expense to come after him. What he didn't figure on is Ice Ice Baby becoming a monster hit.
An American friend of Roger called him and told him about the song. Roger told everyone else and both Queen and David Bowie had their lawyers contact Vanilla Ice. At first, Ice tried to deny it was the same riff since he had added one extra note to it but that didn't fly for very long.
There was an out-court settlement. Vanilla Ice had to pay both Queen and David Bowie so he could own the rights to Ice Ice Baby. I don't know how much he paid but you know it was enough to cover the legal expenses (which we would be extensive) and he also agreed to give Queen/David Bowie credit. (When Vanilla Ice told everyone that he bought the rights to the song, many people mistakenly thought he meant he bought the rights to Uner Pressure but that's not true.)

There's also a story behind the video... Queen and David Bowie neither shoot the video nor sung it together in any other occasion, at Live Aid for instance because Freddie and Bowie had a huge raw in the studio... There was a rule between them that no one would see and watch what the other write and record until the track is finished... But Bowie broke that rule... One day while Freddie was inside recording his lines (I think his falsetto "Whyyyyy?" I'm not sure), Bowie was behind the door... When Freddie found out, he went reaaaally mad. After that, Freddie didn't want to see Bowie's face ever again in his life... They met each other again in 1985 at Live Aid... I was the last time... Bowie sung the song at Freddie's Tribute in 1992...

Cool, So you said that you first want to get through Queen's biggest hits and after that, the ones that Some people don't really know of. So if you want to hear another Hit you should hear Seven Seas Of Rhye. That's their first hit song that made Queen blow up (after that another blow up was Killer Queen and the next one after Killer Queen was Bohemian Rhapsody, but you already know these 2). I'm always requesting Queen in the Lap of the Gods live at rainbow but that's one that less people know of (but should know of), so choose what you want to choose. The high note at 11:25 was Freddie (he is saying whyyyy why whyyyyyyyyyyyyYYY and then he goes higher to the Note G5 which he holds and then he does a quick A5. I can do these notes too but Damn I couldn't hold it that Long x0) Freddie's Vocal Range goes 1 Note higher than Roger Taylor's (the Drummer) you know that the drummer sings High and always sings higher in the Background than Freddie but still Freddie could go one note higher than Roger's highest note. The thing is that Roger actually could Hold his highest notes and Freddie only screamed his E6 and F6 so that is balancing it out. And just a Random fact: Roger can actually go Deeper than Freddie lol. (so what I meant with balancing it out is that everyone says that Roger is the High singer of the Group although Freddie can go Higher. But Roger does do high notes more often than Freddie AND Roger also could hold his E6 for example where however Freddie was only screaming his E6. Also Freddie is a Baritone and Roger a High Tenor which means that Singing high shouldn't always be that hard to Roger since his Voice is naturally high. and Rock Raspy😍)
(also I'm still Requesting Queen in the Lap of the Gods live at the Rainbow 1974)

Freddy and David Bowie went into the studio separately to see what lyrics t they could come up with, Freddy went first then Bowie, Freddy was impressed that Bowie's stuff worked with what he had done, another person told Freddy that it's easy when he stood by the door watching him, Freddy was swearing .

Their voices works well together, they had very different voices. David was a baritone, so he sings all of the low parts. Freddie was a tenor so he sings all of the high parts. This duet is often recognized as one of the best duets ever recorded, because every piece fits so well together. Here is a great analysis of Under Pressure th-cam.com/video/rhd-pMT4mSk/w-d-xo.html

Hello, I have had a lot of fun watching your reactions to videos of my favorite group, on this topic I recommend you watch the live version of 1981 in Montreal, for me the best live version of the theme. I tell you that looking and reviewing several live tour of the band I was selected what for me would be their best versions of their live songs from different eras, if you want you can check it to see if you are entertained even more this group that their best facet were live
Best regards from Puerto Montt City, Chile

Although this great tune originated with Queen themselves, it was Bowie's genius as a lyricist that really rescued this tune from total oblivion and turned it into the classic song we know today.
And of course Freddy ran with it - and turned it into a total legend.

  • @LarsPallesen
    @LarsPallesen 4 ปีที่แล้ว

The high notes are all Freddie. He actually had a beautiful falsetto though he didn't use it very often. If you REALLY want to have your mind blown by Freddie Mercury's falsetto, then you should check out a little piece called "Exercises In Free Love". (It's on TH-cam). You literally won't believe your ears at first! Another example of Freddie singing in falsetto is a song called "Cool Cat". Most of the hard rock old-school Queen fans hate that song, but I actually think it's pretty ... cool :-)

That was the highest note Freddie ever sung I think! His range was insane. The lowest Freddie sung was as backing vocals in 'All Dead All Dead'; a song Brian did the lead vocals on about his pet cat when it died... Queen love their cats, lol. Freddie sings his lowest note at the end of every chorus section as backing vocals. It would be great if you could compare: th-cam.com/video/l_6AC2u0E4E/w-d-xo.html

It seems like you are on a serious Queen journey. Here is a song, that is by far Queen's most experimental, Pink Floydian, Dorothy caught up in the tornado, after dropping a hit of acid, psychedelic studio engineered, musical mind glitch. It's off of the album, "A Night at the Opera." "The Prophet Song."
Headphones and an expansive imagination are both musts. Listen to the album version.

"Why can't we give love one more chance" I always saw this song in the context of when it was written. I think he saw the failures of the 60's hippie movement and this was a response to that. We tend to repeat these anticlimactic revolutions. Hopefully we don't do that again now.
