This is the new BMW i4, but it’s not just any i4, this is the M50 variant which means it gets dual motors and a LOT of power, so thanks to my friends at International BMW I get to take this thing for a rip and see if BMW’s first all electric sport sedan is true BMW
One thing you’ll notice about this car right away is that it feels very familiar.
It looks like a 4 series, The interior is very 4 series, even the chassis underneath is borrowed from the normal gas-powered 4 series
Which means they saved money on development, which means you save money. In the entry i40 trim you start out under $56k. If you want dual motor AWD, all the power, and the full M50 experience you’ll start at $66k..which is actually really not bad all things considered
And I mentioned something a minute ago that’s very important. This is the M50 trim.
There is no full M version of this car
But if that bums you out, hold on because in here you get 536hp and 586lbft which is moer power than you get in an M4 competition…
Interestingly enough the way they’ve calibrated how the power comes in is still very true BMW. Your rear motor drives the car most of the time and then the front motor kicks in when it’s needed for things like traction or face-peeling launches
And let’s talk about that power a little bit more. Sure it’s blisteringly quick, but it also brings more drama than really any other EV I’ve tested.
And that’s because they brought in the big guns to design the sound.
You get a eco pro for maximising your range, you get a comfort mode to soften and relax the car, and you get a sport mode to sharpen things up. But there’s a new mode here too
And that’s Sport Boost, which makes me think of a turbo so it doesn’t make sense in that way.
However, the other definition of boost is CRAZY FAST…and this is
But this is still an EV so range is a thing.
You have eco pro AND B mode for 1 pedal driving and you can adjust how much regen you want the car to do when you lift off the throttle
Range will depend on your wheel selection. With the 19 inch wheels we have here you get 270 miles which is pretty good
But if you go up to the 20 inch wheels your range drops to 226 miles
Yes it’s fast, but it’s also VERY heavy as all EVs are
This means the electric steering has to be boosted to account for the weight. It’s still very sharp, but you won’t get as much feedback as you would in a gas car
They also reinforced the chassis to stiffen it up and you can see that under the hood
The suspension is a strut front with multilink rear set-up, but this also has self-leveling rear suspension so it stays more planted and consistent than some other things
Behind the wheel then, does it feel like a BMW? Yes. Does it feel like an M? Not exactly
Ultimately, Of the big German 3, Mercedes has always been more lux than sport, Audi is pretty close to equal parts, but BMW generally always leans more sporty than the other 2. And that stays true with the i4. It’s more fizzy to drive, but now with an electric powertrain it does quiet and relaxed better than ever
Then inside the cabin it’s much the same story as the exterior in the sense that it’s very familiar to the gas powered 4 series
And I like that about the design
The big difference you notice right away is the MASSIVE dual screens you have
It’s running new software, which is iDrive 8
It looks fantastic, it’s quick, and has lots of features
Wireless Car Play and Android Auto
    360 cameras
The only downside to this, at least in my opinion, is that they got rid of all the hard buttons below the screen so you have to use the screen for stuff like climate controls
The tech does dominate a lot of the experience, but I didn’t find that it detracted from the experience
The design is modern and typical BMW which is good
You get your Msport steering wheel which I love, heated wheel, etc
There are subtle things that remind you it’s an EV though like the blue accents everywhere
The comfort is the same good level it’s always at
You get a nice big pano roof
And then the rear seats get chargers, vents, but you do get less space it feels like
Probably because the batteries in the floor made them raise the seats a touch
From an interior perspective, it’s very familiar BMW and very familiar 4series, but with little or BIG reminders that you’re in the beginning of the next generation
And with that let’s get into final thoughts

Great video and review. This is a beauty of a bmw. Not too crazy or polarizing like the iX. I have a model 3 performance but find myself wanting to check out the fit and finish of the i4 anyway esp since I feel a bit let down that I’ve had creaks, fitment issues, and had to get the glass roof replaced already for being “out of spec” from the factory.

Truth be told, when it comes to EV, they're still no match for Tesla. All these test driver must have experienced some versions of performance Tesla, so even if they can make some "excited" face on camera, they know very well that it's really not that fast, and range per charge is just not outstanding. Well, I guess all the shortfalls won't stop hardcore bmers to look away, the question is, for how much longer?

    • @ystebadvonschlegel3295
      @ystebadvonschlegel3295 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Except Tesla range is wildly overstated and BMW range comes in as advertised so range isn’t that much different. Speed - Tesla definitely wins straight line pulls. But quality - ah, there is where many of us just flat out refuse to buy. I’ve owned BMW for years and they always have made quality cars. I hear way to many horror stories about what is “acceptable” in Tesla world to buy one. Oh and I’d never ever buy a car with a stupid yoke steering. In the end, you have to choose which is important to you.

    • @chrisginoc
      @chrisginoc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Tesla simply has the pioneer advantage. Rivian and Lucid are on their heels because they've recruited so much top level talent from Tesla. It's not only Elon making vehicle or design decisions; he has had good upper level executives and management. As the competition heats up things will change. Ford invented the Model T. Has Ford been the best car company the last 40 years? I like Tesla's infrastructure, but I just can't stand the bland interiors of the Model 3 and such. Competition will be good for consumers because Elon will be forced to up his interior game.

I love this car. It’s the first electric I’d consider trading my M3 for. Love the stats and the look. That said, Tesla being crappy is not my experience. The cabin isn’t cheap feeling I think that’s such an incredible misnomer. It is super simple but in a way that I find vaguely Swedish and has a very cool aesthetic. The materials in my M3 are top notch including everything you touch, and the headliners and even the vegan leather seats. Again this is a great car and I’m excited about BMW making this car but don’t underestimate the Tesla a lot of us genuinely love our cars

@@ystebadvonschlegel3295 Yeah, but BMW is notorious for looking to Rube Goldberg for design inspiration. BMW is cutting corners and removing options almost on a monthly basis, and their quilty is suffering as well. I have a 23 430 GC and I couldn't get a HUD, Harmon Kardon upgrates, no lumbar support on the passenger side, no corning headlights, no fog lights, no stop and go, etc, They've also dramatically reduced what is covered under warranty and the maintenance packages at this point are an absolute waste of money offering little more than brake pads and oil changes. Quality? interesting comment. BMW has cut back their warranty coverage because, in the words of a salesman, "wanttany work was really hurting BMW financially" So how do you counter that? Just charge the customer.
