  • For as long as we've been around, BMW has used the slogan "The Ultimate Driving Machine" as its tag line in adverts.
And for many years, thanks to BMW's legendary straight six and emphasis on driver-centric design, that was the case.
But in a new age of electric vehicles, will BMW manage to keep hold of that moniker? We're about to find out with the 2022 BMW i4 eDrive 40.

I actually really enjoyed this review, it’s well produced, very nicely shot B roll. I particularly appreciate the articulate delivery, nicely paced and clear, rather than the overblown vocabulary of presenters on other channels. What’s also nice is you really get a ‘sense’ of the car - from real practical driving experiences of the presenters. Very useful as I have one on order!

I picked up my i4 (M50) yesterday, and I'm fully in love with it. It does have the issue of the transmission tunnel, but for how infrequently I have people in the back, it's not a problem. this car goes exactly where I want to point it, and accelerates even more than I could imagine.

Nice review. As for Mike, you can spec it with less tech. I didn’t opt for the tech pack, just the comfort plus, for memory seats with lumbar, and the Harmon Kardon sounds. The rest is down to me. No driver assists. I already own a 4 series, and love it. Perfect for our family, with my 14 yr old daughter. She’s quite comfy in the back. I’ve ordered one as I wanted a future version of the car I already own.

  • @AaronHope_Sow

    1. Michael a lot of people are not happy with the way modern BMW's drive but they are mostly frustrated by the lack of steering feel. But I respect BMW as one of the most technologically advanced vehicle manufacturers whose technology trickles down to other manufacturers. They were the first to introduce heads-up display and advanced trip computers for example which traditionally trickled down from the flagship seven series executive models which are less driver's cars. They've been increasing drivers' assistance features for decades now.
    2. The a la cart pricing BMW typically offers with less standard options always translates to the wheel packages. Interesting differences in the range by wheel size/design is normal. We never talk about how this impact gas mileage in petrol vehicles. There is a portion of BMW owners that would have two or more sets of wheels (summer/winter tires).
I wonder if folks will now opt for a long range set, and a low range around town set and what the implications for the car's software would be since it wouldn't be as simple as car.

Our new e40 msport has averaged 4.0 mi/kWh in the first 500 miles driving in cool New England weather with some rain. The hatch makes loading easy and the back easily holds bicycles or our biweekly trash/recycling run. I’m thoroughly pleased with it so far. We tested the ID.4, Mach-E, Model Y, Ioniq 5, and EV6. Of those, the i4 e40 came out on top for us (no kids, no dogs, 150-mile round trip commute once a week).

About the same price as the Tesla Model 3 Long Range (until they jack up the price once again). Hard to say which one I would prefer. BMW's warranty is pretty dismal though (4 years/50,000 miles).

As a current i4 owner and formerly a Model 3 owner I would say the biggest difference is the comfort of the suspension. the Model 3 has a super stiff suspnesion that feels every bump in the road. the i4 has the usual BMW suspension that is reasonably stiff, BUT a comfortable ride that insulates you from all the bumps.

    • @JustMe99999

Thumbs up for being a sed-hatchback and not an suv-thing. However, I think BMW missed a trick by not having a dedicated electric platform to optimise interior space and also not having usable storage under that massive bonnet.

  • @wilber8260
    @wilber8260 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks for another great review. The only thing i would add is that the i4 has a good quality BMW suspension that keeps the ride comfortable on bumpy roads. Unlike the Tesla Model 3 that feels EVERY bump all the time! kind of a big deal!

Hi TE team, greetings from the U.K.. I’ve enjoyed the BMWs I’ve owned, currently an i3 BEV (42kWh). I know Kate had an unfortunate experience with their i3, but mine has been great - nearly 3 years in now (new in September 2019). As we head into the age of EVs, I do think BMW missed a trick by (seemingly) dropping its radical materials technology from the i3 and i8. Imagine combining the casting technology from Tesla with the CFRP and plastic panels of the i3/i8 to make a light weight rust free rigid body. No one seems to make the perfect car, at least for me. A Model 3 as a hatchback or station wagon with the styling of an XPeng P5 and the materials and interior of the BMW i3 fused together would tick a lot of boxes for me - I can but dream!

An inline 6 is naturally balanced whilst a V6 is not-- it requires counterweights to run smoothly.

With the exception of the Gran Coupe, the 4 Series are the two-door models while the 3 Series are four-doors. Hence the inclination to lump the four-door i4 into the 3 Series family tree rather than the purebred 2-door coupes of the 4 Series.

Seems like they could have put the motor in the rear and avoided the "transmission tunnel" and had a large frunk. Even storage near the front seats is better without the tunnel. I think taking an ICE car design and making an EV has usually been a poor choice.
Also, we were thinking alike regarding with driver assistance features and the "ultimate driving machine". Eventually, BMW will have a marketing decision to make as other brands get to Level 4 and 5.

The body is shared with 4 series ICE cars, so you get the transmission tunnel. It does seem rather silly that there isn’t a frunk on the i4, since there isn’t a motor up front.

    • @BogeyTheBear

Well, in the AWD models (M50 and X40) the front motor does take up the space under the hood. In the RWD models there is indeed a gaping hole where a tray or even a narrow bin could fit.

This is quite a disappointment by BMW. I mean dropping a electric drive train into a ICE car. That's so lazy! Also, comparing the BMW to a Volvo maybe apt for the future. I fear this maybe the end of their relevance. The design language is so loud, like American, so unlike BMWs pedigree. I loved my 335d. That drove like the ultimate driving machine indeed. The tech on this eV car is likely generations behind the competition. Heard everyone walked past the BMW station at the last Shanghai auto show. Totally makes sense. Very underwhelmed.
