Neptune ASM vs Moskva Cruiser: How the flagship was sunk? Fight for Freedom

  • The Moskva missile cruiser is a flagship and pride of the Russian naval fleet. Or, rather, the former flagship and pride. First it eventually did go *uck itself, and then in April, two Ukrainian Neptune missiles sent the ship underwater. As it turned out, the nature itself helped to sink the vessel-a radar had identified the enemy’s cruiser in a way it was not designed to. Check out the story of this unique operation in today’s video.

Very interesting about the lovely luck with the weather related extra radar echos. Such things have a history of accidental importance during many events in history but not much reported that it was a player with the Moskva's detection too.
But then do note - the cred and glory of the final outcome should mostly go to those who manage to make the most of an opportunity suddenly presented to them. Heróyam sláva!

The Moskva had a serious design flaw.
One small warhead striking one of the exposed missile launch tubes would start nasty fire and potentially a significant explosion.
EDIT An explosion in one of the missile launch tubes could set off a chain reaction in the remaining missile launch tubes.

@@richardivonen3564 There is so much more to it though. The USS Stark was hit by two Exocet missiles and made its way to port under its own steam. This was because the crew were properly trained and properly equipped for damage control. In the US Navy everybody who serves on a ship has to be trained in firefighting, even the cooks and if a ship has one, the ship's doctor. They are regularly drilled and tested to see that it has sunk in and that it stays there.
So the crew of the Stark were able to put out the fires that started after they were hit and get the ship working well enough to make its way to a port. Historically US Navy crews have even managed to put out fires on aircraft carrier hangar decks laden with fuelled and armed aircraft.
According to a number of Russian sailors posting on various social media sites damage control training in the Russian navy is poor and they have another problem; sailors often steal and sell safety equipment, *including fire extinguishers!* Yes, they steal and sell the equipment from their own ship that they might one day need to save their lives. So design flaws aside, the crew of the Moskva had little chance of controlling the fires; they were inadequately trained in damage control, poorly practised and probably didn't have all the equipment they were supposed to have to fight a fire.
      EDITED for spelling.

@@richardivonen3564 Hell yeah. On ce a missile strikes a missile in a launch tube that's it. Not only does the missile cause an explosion, it also sets off everything on the ship that explodes. When the fires reach the ships magazine it's good night Irene.

I doubt the reasoning. The Moskwa superstructure is by no means stealthy, so it delivers a big radar echo, even beyond the usual range. And if the radar waves had bounced of the clouds, they would also have been severely attenuated by the water droplets in the air, rather reducing range. Also the waves will have produced a lot of radar clutter, further reducing sensitivity. Whatever, it was a great success, and Russians should be left in doubt of the limits of the Neptune system.

However, in operation none of the Moskva’s systems were working. Nearly no maintenance was done, and list of inspection violations a mile long. The ship was barely afloat. Two Finnish members of parliament proposed that Europe should jointly donate Leopard2 tanks to Ukraine. Translated:
“Ukraine's success has been based not only on a strong will to defend the country, but also on Western training and material support. This support will play a part in how the war ends. It is in our, Europe's, and the whole free world's interest that it ends with Ukraine winning as quickly as possible. It would be dangerous if Russia felt that it benefited from the criminal war of aggression in any way. Material support for Ukraine must therefore be continued and strengthened.
Although Ukraine has been resolutely supported, some weapons systems are still excluded from support. These include western, modern battle tanks. Such weapons would significantly increase Ukraine's strike capability on the battlefield. The new equipment requires training, and therefore it would be especially valuable to supply the Ukrainians with a large number of the same type of weapon that the Ukrainian forces can be effectively trained to use. ….
The Leopard 2 tank of German origin would be perfectly suited for the purpose. Thousands of pieces of its various variations have been built since the end of the 1970s, and the user countries include, in addition to Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, Norway, Poland, Canada and Finland. The Leopard 2 is indeed one of the most commonly used western battle tanks.
A joint European effort would have the opportunity to give significant additional support to Ukraine's land combat capability and perhaps help Ukraine in a decisive way to maintain the momentum it has achieved in the war.
Finland has a total of about two hundred Leopard 2 battle tanks. Geography limits Finland's possibilities to hand over a large number of key equipment in use, but Finland's participation with even a small number of tanks would be valuable if the European tank effort can be started. It is needed now. By starting this conversation, we could also sow the seed of bigger and more effective support. ….”
Search 'Ukraina tarvitsee eurooppalaiset Leopard-talkoot' for original Finnish text.

So can we take this as official confirmation that the Moskva was indeed struck by a Neptune anti-ship missile? There’s a bunch of theories out there by both amateur & professional OSINT analysts, but nothing concrete.

    • @BullGator-kd6ge

Pretty sure Neptune missiles striking the Moskva has been the only story with substantial weight and proof.

      @thecheeze9001 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@BullGator-kd6ge so did the fact that the Moskva was in a state of disrepair before the conflict. So it's entirely possible that mechanical/electrical issues caused the fire which led to the sinking. The only way we can be sure is if someone were to confirm via diving to the site of the wreck. Impossible to do during this war.

Article did not mention that a US Navy P8 Poseidon maritime patrol and recognizance plane was flying overwatch in range of tha Moskva and confirmed to the Ukrainians that it was the Moskva they were going to launch missile towards. Those planes have some tricky radars and probably can link to the SBR Satellite Lacrosse system which can find ships at sea.

The United States, UK, and NATO have continuously flown reconnaissance flights over the Black Sea and NATO countries monitoring Russia's forces. The Ukraine could have just as easily been informed of the Moskva's presence by those sources.

They truly figured out what happened to the Moskva. Some highly trained orc sailor saw a lever in the control room that said DIVE. Being that he had limited intelligence, he thought it said DRIVE. Oh well, borscht happens. My big question is why the ship's controls were in English?
