Two Days With the 155th Brigade Near Pokrovsk

- First heavily publicized as the first French-trained brigade, the 155th ‘Anne of Kyiv’ Brigade made the headlines soon after its deployment due to massive issues between soldiers going AWOL and equipment distributed to other brigades. Our team met with soldiers of the brigade deployed near Pokrovsk to understand, through their own words, what really happened and how the military is learning from its mistakes.

What struck me is that this report does not and did not try to sugarcoat the limitations and flaws in the preparations and deployment of this particular unit. It is inherant to any quickly arrising conflict and the adaptations that must be made in order to make it work out as required to the expected circumstances, usually at the cost of blood and lives of those who serve in the involved forces.
I am sure that the French units who undertook the efforts of training and preparing these brave men, did their best with the means at their disposal, but training in France simply is not the same as operating in combat theatre.
I think that deploying the 155th 'Anne of Kiyv' Brigade as an organic unit was an avoidable mistake that had the adverse morale effects as observed. It likely would have been better to merge personnel with older, more combat-capable and experienced units, even if that meant that certain equipment related training would then have been useless, but the concepts of doing combat remain the same. That way the deficiencies of the peacetime trained (in France) personnel would more quickly level up to what older, more combat-wise units are confronted with. The Kiyv reaction to AWOL situations and consequences and the lenience as applied and allowed to involved deserters or run-aways is a wise one. Most men are, even under the current pressures and circumstances, not cowards and will shape up to their best when given a reasonable way of mending their ways without excessive punishment.
The tankers in their Leo2A4s were Polish train and likely less in peacetime like circumstances. Not to put the French down in any way, but Poland's experiences likely gives the Polish a more grim, aggressive and with the similar physical environment a more realistic assessment of what combat training would need to be. As a former tanker myself, I know the tension and fear of operating in a large machine that sticks out like a sore thumb under the best of circumstances. The confidence of training and experience as well as the marvelous capabilities of their equipment, combined with the quality of their leadership will have to carry them to the level of excellence to survive.
Slava Ukraini!
Excellent 👍 merci
Honneur aux Ukrainiens 💙💛
When so many new brigades are having these issues its not an unavoidable issue but signs of a terrible high command and the situation in the front line prove this, the russian army is not an army is an armed mob and the sole reason of their advance is incompetence and lack of reforms and a terrible managed mobilization from the ukranian side
Support for the AFU and the Ukrainian People!
Thank you for your service!
Their commanding officer was arrested recently. At least the president is there to stop this stuff when it starts to happen

I'm not brave enough to roam a war zone wearing Day-Glo yellow bullseye markings.
Certainly not on your "scout" helmet ...
Is this the Brigade that deserted
Only half of it. Something like 1 500 men.
@porcheriecosmique5865 well, that makes it better...the donkeys are yet to desert
Why don’t you guys tell us how
Vive le liberte! Bon courage lads
Seems lack of long training course, low motivation n weak leadership resulted in AWOLs

Have the frenchies surrendered yet
How long after this did they all flee?
They're not Russians so that's not an issue.
@@Ofasia777 Hello, you appear to not quite understand how to use the English language correctly. Would you care to re-phrase whatever point you were attempting to make?
@ Ukrainians fight, Russians flee.
All did not flee, the training was in France in 2024 and "formed" in 2025. The command of this brigade caused the desertions and the former command was relieved and are under investigation, the new command and new structure is however working and many soldiers have returned.
@@TheAndyWoohooHaha The French are only good at training to surrender
why is a brigade trained in France as light infantry with Frence vehicles mixed with Polish trained soldiers using Leopard 2 tanks? Just to randomly make it more difficult for the logi guys?
Welcome to the zoo. They're used to it.
As a Mechanized infantry Battalion it make sense since it's a NATO standard battalion. The Equipment is not the key it's the tactic and or standard of the training. However the tanks are German and came through Poland, the VAB and the Infantry came and was trained by the French.
Ukraine do not have the advantage of having material coming from one source, the only thing is that NATO countries use the same ordonnance more or less, as for vehicles they have to take what is offered.
1700 went AWOL upon first contact????
Yea definitely trained by the French
👌✌️✌️✌️👍👍👍💪💪💪👍✌️👌👌❤️❤️❤️🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
I thought this entire brigade was dissolved
Nah just the command that was, it was later ( now ) mixed up and back in duty. The command is under investigation and there is new command.
ALARMSTUFE ROT 2
What a roast of the french training. No drones and constant artillery during training = not adapted training for modern warfare 🎉
yeah just shell people during training, of course artillery is factored in but there's a massive difference between training and getting actually shelled, it's the same for any army. It was the same for ukrainian tankers that were trained by the US in germany.
This war is defining the new meta so please name ONE country that had adapted training for this new kind of conflict, rethorical question, the answer is none, not even the americans and their war on terror experience were up to date with their training.
@@mandrac2 If anything the Americans would be mong the least suited to fight this war with the tools and other conditions Ukrainians are stuck with, between not having oceans and mountain ranges to protect them, the massive casualities suffered and the need for humble diplomats doing cartwheels for military scraps, they would be among the fastest to fold. I wouldn't go so far as to call this war a new meta as every war is its own vacuum (something almost everyone seem to overlook for some reason). While everyone makes so much noise about drones which are proving next to useless on offense, and questionable still on defense, as we see participants forced to increasingly switch to more expensive fly-by-wire systems.
Has not much to do with French training, they give like all other NATO countries a basic training overall and specific for their Military Occupational Specialty.
Let me tell you this, no "army" out there has the training for how things have developed in Ukraine, they are actually adopting now and rewriting their doctrines, so bashing France just show your ignorance on the matter.

Thanks Andy, (writing from France), for correcting so many misconceptions . Good to hear that some deserters have returned now that the rotten officers have been replaced . The bad old Soviet habits and culture persisted lonng after Independence , and as we see still do to this day , to some extent, despite the more enlightened NATO training and culture .
I was very impressed with the honesty shown, and the soldiers interviewed .
Its sad that after 3 years France and some other countries cannot provide proper training for UA soldiers. Too many years fighting bushwars in Africa it seems.
"France and some other countries cannot provide proper training for UA soldiers. Too many years fighting bushwars in Africa it seems."
🙄the problem is not the training in France, it was adapted to a conflict in central Europe. The problem is France trained a brigade to function as a whole entity and when the brigade came back to Ukraine then the commandment dismantled it to fill the holes here and there. Obviously a lot of Ukrainian soldiers were deceived by that decision and decided to quit. It was a stupid decision, wasting a lot of time, money and effort. That's why Zelinksy ordered an investigation. Because he knew that kind of poor decision mines the confidence of the European countries in Kiyv...
@pandaDotDragon Was refering to the part where the soldier in the video specifically says that the training did not represent what they met on the battlefield. Structural problems aside, if basic training is lacking the correct elements combat effectiveness will be low.
@@pandaDotDragon In the context of a war where Ukrainians are stuck on the backfoot against an overwhelming foe, there is no good options, only mitigating measures. Nicely led out "plans" by the West and like-minded naive souls are particularly, utterly, meaningless but still have to be entertained by Ukraine for the sake of appearances. Now if they actually provided Ukraine with the tools to win their war, it would be a different story, but that's not what is happening.
Thanks for showcasing your ignorance. You have no clue about the military, that is obvious.
@@jonekone3769 These recruits still learned basic military skills. How to move, how to shoot, how to work as a team, how to use and maintain their equipment. It all takes resources that the Ukrainian military cannot spare at the moment. But sure, you are right, France hasn't fought this kind of conflict for a long time, and never with the omnipresent threat of drones. But then, who has? Ukraine and Russia, that's it.
The lack of respect Ukraine gave the Foreign Battalions will always be remembered... dorks.
wtf are you talking about? Maybe one of the "war tourists" that was sent back home and not accepted? Tell us more.
155th brigeade was completly wiped out. They didn't dissapear just like that.
Has the brigade disbanded? I just heard that it was but I just can’t believe it. Come on Ukraine you can do it
🇦🇺🦘🇦🇺👍🏼🇺🇦
It doesn't look well for the French, because they have been the butt of memes and jokes for a very long time (the French retreats from every battle).
wich is not true at all
pauvre clown décérébré. France is the European country that has fought the most battles and wars in 1000 years and won the majority of them.
The problem is France trained a brigade to function as a whole entity and when the brigade came back to Ukraine then the commandment dismantled it to fill the holes here and there. Obviously a lot of Ukrainian soldiers were disappointed by that decision and decided to quit. And yes a lot of people in France are pissed off by that situation.
@@pandaDotDragon Deceived? Disappointed?

All 150+ Brigade where failures
