Keep in mind that when you're doing a compression test by turning it over by hand you will likely get much smaller compression numbers than if you turned it over on the starter. Gold standard is always consistency between cylinders, not absolute numbers since there's so much difference in testing methodologies. Either way love seeing more work on the TDI TJ! Best of luck! 👍

May as well while your there, check it out. My bhw in '86 4Runner had a head gasket blown boost into the coolant. Everything checked out, runs great. Excited for a good transmission to hold power.
Hello Nate, TDIs are complex engines. The less you take apart, the less trouble you get. Keep the bottom end as it is. Inspect the oil pan and the pickup. If there are no traces of metal chips just keep the bottom end bolted together. The white smoke tells you it was an injector problem (there is a very special smell of non burned diesel). Make sure the cylinder head is straight. If it is bent source a new one! No chance to fix it! The best move was to send the injectors to a shop to bench test them. Put it all together with new gaskets and hardware and fingers crossed.
Disassemble the motor completely. Deck the block and head to ensure both are true. Replace the head bolts with studs. Think about adding a Provent 200 to ensure oil from crankcase stays out of the intake. Inspect the pistons to make sure you are not cracking piston from pin boss up to and through the ring lands. Have seen this on tuned 2.8 Duramax. Also check conrod bearings as have seen abnormal wear there as well. And have fun! Family first!
If you’re pulling into a gas station and the big tanker is there filling the stations tanks go to a different fuel station. The bad stuff usually settles at the bottom but when they are putting fresh fuel in the tanks it gets everything moving around.
I deliver fuel and I can tell you most stations their fuel doesn’t last long enough for it to get “old”. Stations get fuel every few days. Plus usually there’s less than 1000 gallons left in the tank when I’m dropping 8500 gallons on top of it. That 1000 gallons of maybe 3 day old does nothing to that 8500.
I just installed the same transmission in my YJ. The end of the shifter linkage on the Atlas contacts the transmission. Experimenting with re-clocking the Atlas and maybe changing the linkage to the rod-end style. I had to remove the grill to get the 6.0 and transmission in the tunnel with the engine hoist. I'm looking forward to the next video.
I've heard of propane injection on diesels. Diesel Werks was a place I had heard with propane injection and also NOS injection for diesels. Looking forward to the next in this series. God bless and stay well.
Look into doing fire rings on the head to better clamp the head gasket. To limit a blown out head gasket. We do it on the bigger truck diesels with more boost. And i would suggest having the head milled flat so your 100% sure it's going to seal uniformly even across the block.
Gives extensive notes on using a cart for convenience, sets engine on the floor. 🤣 Seriously though, i enjoy the trips,, but I'm happy to see more shop stuff again!
As a "professional" mechanic, my number one biggest money making tool it my roll cart full of my most used tools. Fewer steps to the main box means more jobs done which means more money in the long run
The head gasket with without a doubt cause cold running issues. My 2002 Acura has a small leak and only issue is cold starts, runs perfect once warmed up. Leaks just enough coolant to cause a messy cylinder till it cleans up and the gasket seals from expansion
1: I think that looks like head gasket for sure. 2: Since revved out like that, I'd check bottom end and pistons. 3: If you're shot, you can chill with the vids. We'll wait.
Assuming you have BRM since it's out an 06...My BRM had 285K on it when I sold it, its still going strong with current owner. I'd be amazed if you have bottom end issues. The biggest problem the the BRM & BEW pumpe duese is cam/cam bearing failure due to wear. Number 2 is the VGT actuator only serviced with the turbo. Then injectors. Before you throw NOS at it do yourself a favor & make sure you have a 3 BAR MAP sensor & a better turbo with a "dumb actuator" instead of the electronic actuator for the VGT. The PD140, Garrett 14mm euro spec, is a good option before going with a crazy big HP setup. The Colt cam works really well with the PD140/3 BAR setup too but obviously needs a tune.
I don’t think I’d put NOS on that since it seems sensitive to over-rev. I’d consider water-methanol injection, it’ll bring down your EGT and give you some more power. I had a Snow Performance kit on my Cummins, it was pretty great.
I would toss new bearings & rings in also hone the cylinders. You beat this engine & u are about to beat it harder... u will be kicking yourself when u have 10psi of oil pressure 1000 miles from home and u just hit the first obstacle.
@@sojer6mile wait, you disagree that it’s a sensitve engine, then tell him to rebuild it out of caution? LOL My ex had one of these jettas, it was great. 42mpg… until it ate half the valvetrain. $12k later, it was a good car again 🙄
A 45 shot will be a pretty small favor to ask of this motor 😁 Water meth is great and I will use it eventually but it doesn't do much in terms of power in a tdi. My big hp tdi build will definitely get water meth for egts as well as nos but the water meth will only add 15-20 hp
@@bravowhiskey4684 what I disagree with is it's sensitive to over revving. Bearings & rings are relatively cheap under 300 bucks I assume. I suggest because it's adding a bit more reliability in it not power.... I'm a hemi guy, a good cammed 392 would give him more power u could ever want lol
Pumped to see building happening. Always fun to inspect an engine to see what happened. It definitely sounds like injectors. But a nice refresh would be a good idea. Get some rest as well. Looking forward to what the finds are.
What I learned is diesel pistons are really weird, it looks like they have huge holes or cups in them (My phone's screen is really cracked so I'll be watching again when I get home) I've never worked on (or even driven) a diesel, so this is really cool to see. Another great video 👍
Nate, it won't be a ring. Don't tear the bottom end down until you hear about your injectors. You either have a leaking injector tip causing that wet cylinder, or if it isn't that then you have a bent rod lowering your compression on that cylinder.
At Moab, jeep had black smoke, so burning excess fuel, fuel throttle issue. Startup video has blue smoke, so burning oil. I'd be replacing value stem seals, sometimes you get a little oil that drips past seal when motor is stationary for period of time (eg overnight), at start up that little bit of oil burns off (blue smoke), then exhaust goes normal (no smoke). While you have the motor out, its a cheap replacement on an item that can give you way to much trouble.
It's torn apart, so it's cheap insurance to make sure the bottom end is good. That dark on the block suggests to me that a gasket leaked, a head warped, and/or a head bolt got loosened up and the threads won't hold it down good enough.
I’d love to see you pull the engine apart further. Honestly idk how you can just pull all of that apart and not mess it up. Makes me feel better for when I have to work on my 22re
if your chucking nitrous on it, IMO best to check the rings are good, check big end and main clearances .. youve come this far, may as well put the extra 10% in and double check the rest

So…I did a thing… I sold my last jeep a few years ago to build my plumbing business. Today I bought a tdi swapped 97 TJ! Gonna need to get to work on building this jeep!
If it had bad rings you’d have more than Smokey starts. Low pwr and constant smoking and blow. Not to mention scarring on the cylinder walls. Supposedly the shape of the piston makes for some good increases in performance and noise if I remember correctly
That's the question I was looking for.

There will be nothing wrong with the rings or bottom end vw pd engines are pretty good it's a head gasket or injection issue that's whats my money is on. I'm looking forward to finding out the answers. Great video great work 😎👍
