Since I'm the first to comment on this, I'll just say that I'm glad that there's renewed interest in this extraordinary band. E.L.P. was my first concert experience. Brain Salad Surgery tour in 1974. Amazing show...in Quadraphonic sound to boot, Houston, Texas. Amongst all my friends, Carl Palmer was "The Bomb"...just an amazingly great drummer. Still sad about Greg and Keith's untimely demise. I hope this doesn't bother Carl, but fans of Keith Emerson should check out his "Moscow" DVD...featuring Marc Bonilla on vocals and guitar. It really showcases Keith's enormous talent on the keys..even while battling the early problems and pain that he was experiencing with his right wrist and hand. Marc Bonilla's voice is very comparable to Greg Lake's, and his guitar playing on the E.L.P. classics is phenomenal.
ELP is my all-time favorite band and Carl Palmer my all-time favorite percussionist. I saw them twice in early 1993. This was well past their heyday but they were still great live performers. Palmer's solo at the end of "Pirates" was the shows' highlight for me---he was soon to turn 43 but his dexterity and hand speed were still as amazing as when he was 23. ELP was a once-in-a-lifetime collection of elite-level virtuoso musicians.
You always hear Bonham, Peart, & Moon as some of the GOAT Drummers but Carl Palmer is STILL beating on skins. Seen him 3 times & he is one of the GOAT for sure IMO.
Guys like Carl Palmer, Danny Seraphine, John Bonham were great driving forces in rock. You had the jazz guys like Buddy Rich, Joe Morello, Gene Krupa that set the bar high. Distinctive sounds and rock sold time. Great era for rock and jazz musicians.
I remember them from back then, a bit vaguely honestly, but it was cool they were a trio. I remember the keyboard and the clean sound, they had quite a groove. Im still here and two of them are gone. For a time we shine, some of us brightly, and then we are gone.
Great interview. Love Carl, in ELP, Asia, and his solo Legacy work. Thanks, John

American’s love guitar heroes ! If ELP had a lead guitarist, they would have been even BIGGER ! 🎸
Great interview.
