    At seven years old, I was almost perfectly placed in Kenner's target demographic for M.A.S.K. . . . my first vehicle I received as a birthday gift was Gator. I think I may still have it!

      Thanks Luke. That hatch is going for silly money. As soon as I saw I just thought I would make something. Sometimes it's just not worth spending a fortune on something that you can make, even if it's not perfect. I hope to do more MASK in future. Cheers

  • @autoneurotic

    I had this as a kid, but only because we randomly found it at a charity shop in the early 90s. I was under 10 years old and didn't really know anything about Mask. In fact, I never knew until much later in adulthood where this vehicle was even from. It was an interesting toy but I never played with it much because it was so out of scale with everything else I had. Lovely video as always Dave.

    I've always wanted the RHINO and the THUNDERHAWK, which is Matt Trakker's car. I think I could live without the rest of the vehicles, but I've always loved those two. All I have currently in my collection from MASK is T-Bot and the kid, which I bought because of the robot. I'm a sucker for robot toys. Robots were always my favorite as a kid, and that still holds for today as well. I used to enjoy playing with those Rascal wind-up robots as a kid, and I'd include them with R2D2, C-3PO, and Twiki from the BUCK ROGERS figures. Just loved those things!
    Great fixes and repairs on the Rhino, Dave! The hinge piece looks so convincing! I doubt I would have spotted that it was a repair at all! Well done! I always love it when you pull out the styrene to make pieces! I just think that you have a real knack for recreating missing parts, and I wish you'd do more videos where you show off your fabrication skills! I know you wing it like the rest of us, but by george, you seem to really be good at it! I just absolutely loved this video! What else can I say? Oh yeah...THANK YOU!

    • @toypolloi
      @toypolloi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      More winging in the next video. Probably the most complicated thing I have made. This one was good practice.

    • @lostonwallace1396
      @lostonwallace1396 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@toypolloi I managed to acquire the THUNDERHAWK, CONDOR, and the RHINO! I needed to get some replacement stickers for both. I only needed one sticker for the THUNDERHAWK to make it complete, but almost all of the RHINO's outside stickers were missing, so I ordered some decals from an Australian seller. The replacement stickers were top-quality, but there was no instruction on where to place the stickers, so I used this video to guide me, and things turned out great!
      I'd love to see more MASK videos in the future (I know that you've already done a CONDOR video, so I hope you acquire more broken MASK vehicles in the future for new video repairs!
      Cheers!

    Fantastic, I think I love these types of fixes the most, the ones where you make parts from scratch.
    I've heard chrome paint works better with a gloss black undercoat, but maybe that's only on die cast cars using an airbrush. I'll have to look into it.
    That mirror paint is super expensive. It looks just like how molotow looks as well. I have a liquid chrome rollerball pen and you can see the chrome inside it and it looks very similar to that.

    I remember that toy. I never had that one, but I got to play with it at my dads work when I was a kid, when he worked on the ‘Mask’ cartoons. He was a prop designer/artist for the cartoons. He designed quite a few vehicles, weapons & gadgets..... I don’t know if he did this one, I’m wanting to say someone else in the team did the big rig for the cartoon, but I know he did several vehicles for the series. I often got to play with toys from certain cartoons before they ever saw the toy store shelf, because the show artists (at least the places my dad worked most of the time) often had a lot of input with the toys. I’ve come across some drawings that look like toy design and manufacturing process that he did for one of the ‘Mask’ toys and several ‘Ring Raiders’. 😜😎 I sure do miss miss him. ‘The Swaj’ aka Dad. 😜🙏🇺🇸
    A really cool blast from the past. 🤓🤪😎

    The MASK toys transformation gimmick lead to many common breaks. The "Switchblade"'s rotors and mechanism and the "Thunderhawk" wings are both always broken when I find them- also condor and pirahna windscreens are always broken. There are more but those are the most common

  • @MonkeyboysToys
    @MonkeyboysToys 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Fantastic work Dave, great results! Rhino was one of the best toys of the 80's. Just wondering, why did you use superglue instead of plastic weld on the wing mirror post? I'm gonna have to get some of that plastic weld stuff, it looks really effective.

    • @Elshiem
      @Elshiem 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Plastic Welder doesn't work in all types of plastic

    • @toypolloi
      @toypolloi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks. Plastic weld only works on certain plastics, styrene is best. Anything that is flexible or soft it doesn't work on. You soon learn what it is good for. Cheers

    Really nice job. I'd like to add a few suggestions if i may. The mirror finish would look way nicer if it was airbrushed over a dark primer. I would suggest a gloss black rattle can spray. You have so much stuff in the toy box that needs rechroming , doing big batch of it would bring them up beautifully without wasting much paint. Another brand to try outside humbrol and vallejo is pro acryl - well worth a go. Love your work, keep doing the sympathetic restorations!

    You should consider getting into 3D printing - that buggy cover would be an ideal project for it, and you could distribute the stl files on you site. I know printers are not the cheapest thing and that is anti the Toypolloi philosophy of being cheap and cheerful 😊 but it could really be a game changer for you. Reach out if you want some more info.

    use bigger soft bristle brush and self levelling thinner to reduce brush strokes and increase smoothness. or use canned chrome sprays.
    as for the joint after the cement you can use high grit sandpaper to smoothen the joints up.

    Great repair on an ingenious toy. I was far too old to buy the toys when MASK came out - and, being of the generation that played with metal toys, by Matchbox, Corgi, Dinky, Triang, and Tonka, they always looked to me at least, to be too fragile to play with.
