Nice repair hester. A couple of tips that I use are: (1) vaseline around the gasket of the gas tank cap and, (2) a mixture of one part powdered citric acid with 3 parts distilled water and then fill the rusted gas tank with this mixture. Let it sit in the rusted gas tank for at least 8 hours. It's the same acid mixture that is used to clean the heat exchanger tubes in utility boilers because it is environmentally friendly. Powdered citric acid can be purchased on Amazon and it is cheap. Citric acid is used as an ingredient in Many food products. And one can make the citric acid mix stronger using more powdered citric acid and less water. People also Use this mixture as a fabric softener for washing clothes (1 part citric acid to 4 parts water ratio) and also as a rinse aid in the dishwasher. It is very environmentally friendly. It does be a fabulous job cleaning rust and metal. It is called an 'acid wash' Take care.
@hester781 And just remember to increase the concentration of citric acid to make a more powerful acidic solution. And I guarantee it will make the inside of the tank shine after it soaks for a while. You can also agitate it in the tank which will also help to clean the surface rust. And after you remove the citric acid water solution make sure to neutralize it with dissolved baking soda and water and then rinse the whole thing out again with clear water. The baking soda is caustic and it will neutralize the acid residue on the surface of inside of the gas tank. And then you want to flush the whole gas tank with nothing more than hot water. I guarantee you will be shocked at the results and citric acit's very cheap, I think I buy a five pound bag for twelve dollars on amazon. Great job on the videos Hester, and merry christmas to you and your family.
Hester781: I followed your video yesterday and successfully cleaned the carb on my Toro Power Max 824 OE. Thank You so much! I have never fixed a mechanical component in my life. Clean Carb, new spark plug, new oil, 93% Super Unleaded. All set in Watertown, New York (the place on the news a few days ago - 2 Feet in my backyard).
A very nice job on this! An easy subscribe, notifications, like and comment for the creator. As noted, the Aspen Fuel is a winner with me as well. I've got a Toro 826 OXE (perhaps a Canadian model) and I'm in a similar situation to this one. The shop I've used is FUBAR and I think I have to try this investigation / cleaning on my own. Your video has given me the confidence to try! Thanks! And - I ran Aspen fuel only for the first 5 years, stabalized gas for a few years after that. It used to start so easily I never used the electric assist! Last season it would start but would only run with choke set almost closed - to run. Now, it won't start. I was looking for where to start - your video - was it!
At EP we rarely change the pilot jet O rings just spray with silicone spray and reinstall works everytime. Unless it has been damaged by others if they have tinkered with it.
Nice video! I have the 724 QXE that should have a similar or same carb. I'm noticing that when I tilt the machine back to push it into garage, the carb is leaking over the carb bowl. I noticed on this video that when you took the bowl off, there was no seal, and you put one on after. I haven't taken the bowl off of mine yet, but thinking that's the cause of my leak. If there is a seal on mine, then I have no idea why it's leaking and it's driving me nuts. I've read that tipping these to a certain angle does cause leaking, but this leak seems extreme to me...
Hi, so at 1:41 you can see the bowl gasket on the blue paper towel. That could definitely be what is causing your leak, there are generally only three reasons, fuel escapes the carburetor, those are the bowl gasket, the bowl nut gasket, or a leaking needle and seat. The fact that yours only seems to leak when you tilt it back tells me it’s most likely your bowl gasket that needs replacing 👍🏻
Okay, yeah I just checked and there is a seal on mine, but may be warped. Just ordered a carb kit from Amazon that includes the float and seal. I was just reading that the float can be punctured for whatever reason and become useless, so I'll just replace both while I'm in there. Thanks!@@hester781
Just for my own sanity…should the carb leak at all if it’s tipped or is some leaking expected? I would expect a little leakage if I tipped the whole thing upside down but I’m not doing that with gas in the tank 😂
@@jllupin33 generally speaking no, if the float is working and set to the proper level and all seals are good, the carb should not leak when tipped to a normal degree. If you have it tipped back drastically then I would expect to see some fuel spill out.
glad to have found your video. I have problem getting my Toro 824 OE start so I took the carb out and check every holes and they were all fine except the black plastic pilot jet. There is no light through the end and I tried to use a tiny wire to poke the hole at the brass end but it wouldn't budge. Does it supposedly have a tiny hole through? Is my only solution is to find and buy a new Jet? Truly will appreciate your answer and suggestion. Thank tou and a new subscriber.
Yes, that should have a very small hole in it. I would suggest trying to drill it out with a micro drill set if you have one. You can buy the pilot jet separately however it's usually easier and cheaper to replace the carburetor at that point. If you are looking at aftermarket carburetors I would recommend HIPA brand through Amazon if you can find one 👍🏻
I now see that you reference the fuel filter when inspecting the inside of the evaporated fuel tank. How do get at the fuel filter out from the inside of the fuel tank or do you remove it from the outside bottom of the tank? From the inside, looks very tight going in through the fuel cap opening. Thanks again.
Now that is one gummed up carb from using ethanol fuel and letting it sit. In Canada we are lucky enough to still be able to get no ethanol fuel at some fuel stations in the 91 Octane level only now a days. There are rumblings that our government may require all octane levels to have some ethanol in the upcoming year. When this happens we will be going back to the 5% ethanol blend fresh fuel only for running but when it comes time for storage we will be running equipment dry installing a litre of alkylate fuel either Kinetix, Aspen or Gulf Pro Fuel available in both 2 and 4 cycle presently costing around $10 Cdn per litre.
I have the identical 8240E snowblower. At the end of your video. The snowblower was starting to hunt. That is exactly my problem. Am I to understand that drilling out that plastic jet can solve my problems?
Hey guy, I am having a problem with a high and low idle it's surges not a steady idle. I ckeck in side carburetor clean and looked at the jet blow it out nothing Do think it could be that Honda pilot jet The engine is Japanese but looks like the Honda pilot engine looks like the same one as Harbor freight and i have a Honda pilot on my log splitter .well anyway what do you think it could be i always put no ethical gas 91 in it since day one. Toro power max 826 OAE 252 cc engine it surges high and low idle some black smoke like it's staving 😮😅 thanks Dave,
Definitely sounds like the pilot Jet is the issue. If you find that it is clean and those O-rings are not torn, you may need to drill the Jet out one size larger. I’ve had to do this with several Honda style carburetors.
So the kit that’s available for these includes the bowl gasket but does not include the pilot idle jet. I already tried two places to find the orings for it as mine are cracked and had no luck. Didn’t feel like continuing the search so I ordered a new carb.
Sense I started using ethanol free fuel, I haven't had any more carburetor issues. If available in your area, I highly recommend using it. It is about the price of 91 octane E10 fuel.
Why on earth do people still use ethanol gas in their engines?? Wake up, pay for non-ethanol gas, and avoid these horrific repair problems. Yup, the non-ethanol fuel is expensive, but consider how much more repairs will cost you!

I agree, the main reason I change these was because I was told someone had already tried to rebuild the curb, and I didn’t want to chance it lol
Wow! That's another reason I use Stabil at ALL times in my small engines.
Anything is better than nothing 👍🏻

I’ve had to open up quite a few over the years, the just make them run so dam lean that the slightest problem makes them surge
