Mk7 Golf R - Error: workshop! Only leave vehicle in Position P - Repair kit walk through

  • This video describes how to install a gear selector repair kit (3Q0713128) on a Mk7 Golf R (2015).
Note that this issue is commonplace on the VAG platform, and so this fix is likely to work on other types of Golf, VW, Audi, Skoda, Seat etc.
This video will explain what the issue is, and how to fix it.
There are two types of gear selector, and the video will explain how to tell which one yours is.
Their VW part numbers are 3Q0713128 (repair described in video) and 5Q0713128A (install guide here - static.nhtsa.g...)
Links removed - order from VW directly (3Q0713128 and 5Q0713128A)
I accept no responsibility for anything in this video or description

This was so useful - you are a legend sir - thank you.
Tip >> I had a few problems putting the cubby back in. The door would not close properly after it was back in. You have to push the cubby in as high as it will gow when refitting it. Put your hand inside the cubby and push up as you slide it in. Then once it's 95% of the way in, you can pop the two clips in at the front on the bottom. reason to push it up is that there are two plastic pegs on the cubby side that locate in a slot in the dash. Easy to miss the slots and have the pegs under it.

Thanks Aaron! My 2016 Golf GTi PP has had this message for the last six months. Ocassionally would clear for a couple of weeks with the rapid back/forth moving of the shifter, but always returned. Bought the part just in case and fitted today. Outstanding video. 2016 Golf TSI. Weather here in Edmonton, Alberta Canada was down to -32 C with wind chill of -45 C. Car was plugged in (but that is not a contributing factor to this issue). Transmission Warning Light came on but would go off after I moved the car back and forth a few times. Shifting was normal throughout all ranges. Then the warning came on to put in Park. Car was still shifting with no problems. I had had the transmission serviced by a VW dealership here earlier this year. First thought was transmission fluid level? I then had the trim replaced that goes around then shift level as part of a recall earlier this year. Thought did they mess up some switch? Also thought some sensor could be an issue. Decided to come to TH-cam and presto! Here's my answer! Will work the shifter back and forth and monitor. Weather is going to warm up to the -15 C range later this week so that may help solve the issue as well. Bottom line? this video answered my question of "IS THE CAR SAFE TO DRIVE" Yes....is the answer. The video gave a quick fix solution that could be tried. It also gave a step by step process of how to replace the part and a heads up as to two different parts. Finally looking through the question the responses gave how much time to complete (without making the video = 1 hour shop time) and cost (in EU or Pounds but easy enough to convert) which gives this Canuck an idea of how much the job would cost if I have the dealership do the job. Again thank you Aaron for taking the time to make this video. Cheers.

Hi buddy, I have a similar problem in my Audi a3, “Electronic fault. Shift to P before leaving vehicle. Please contact workshop.” It only pops up when I move off. Its always when the car shifts from 1st to 2nd gear. If I stay stationary with the engine running it will never pop up. Only when I move away. Drives fine just annoying. Is that gunna be it you reckon? It’s intermittent as well so sometimes I don’t have the fault for days and then it comes back.

Hey Aaron, thanks to your video, I was able able to install the "add on" transmission postion sensor on my B8 passat, it is the same part. VW here in Canberra ordered it for me, but they were very vague as to knowing much about the unit, with no real data on the part, had I not given them the part number that you posted, I doubt that they would have found it from their parts data base. Anyway, I installed the unit yesterday but unfortunately I still get the error, I will re-check to see if I have missed something (I know that I didn't install the locking pin as I couldn't see that it actually was doing anything, but it is possible that it does need to be in place). Has your problem been fully fixed after several months since doing your install or does the error come back at all? Cheers.

Mine been flawless. You need to re do the step where I adjusted it at the end, where you pull the latch towards the rear of the car before you tighten it. Then you need to add the locking pin. Follow the instructions properly and it’ll work. Essentially the switch isn’t being pushed

Hi Aaron, I did this with my Audi A3 and it seems to have done the trick to get rid of the warning on the dash. However when I run a search with an obd tool, I am given the below errors now which weren't present before.
UO103 - Lost Communication With Gear Shift Control Module "A"
    10632 and 10763 transmission faults
32833 abs and 32837 - HV Electronics Coolant Pump Control, Short to GND
When running a google search, I'm guessing it's because the microswitch is now in play and the original sensor isn't accessible anymore so that might be it

I think the pin is only in there for the installation process, you have it in then push the switch all the way against the gear selector and then screw it down, then you pull the pin out. There is a spring in there that allows the switch to move back in the opposite direction.
