Yes yes yes thank you for this!!!! Even though a lot of gen z fashionistas are indeed trying to go for a “quiet luxury” vibe with their outfits, the majority of them are actually achieving more of this 90’s minimalism/gen x soft club (a term I’ve never heard but makes so much sense 😂) look and misnaming it we “quiet luxury”! Maybe there’s a bit of a cross over but really most outfits I’ve seen as examples of “quiet luxury” or the “old money aesthetic (🙄) are actually just very much so exactly the vibe you’re talking about here. As a massive Bjork fan myself, I LOVE this vibe, and as other people here have said, she perfectly embodies this look. Also a massive Matrix movie fan so I’m here for all the nostalgia.
Yeahh I was recommended it on tiktok, but otherwise, I would have never known what this was. I think it's so funny how the prevalence of logomania in previous years has really altered fashion, so much so that anything without a logo and semi-decent quality is deemed "quiet luxury"🤣🤣🤣 Also adore Bjork❤❤❤
I really liked how you brought up the optimism of the future/futurism in regards to the era + I think that the technological optimism of this style is really appealing to this generation because we have a much more nihilistic or negative view of it as it’s advanced so it’s in a more ironic way or nostalgic for a past where the future seemed brighter
I really love this aesthetic and have always pulled inspo from it, glad to see it coming into the mainstream again. Coperni has been killing this vibe in their recent seasons
This reminds me of early 2000 resident evil & matrix As a kid I always use to think everyone dress like this lol I like the luxury style look to it Now it seems that Prada got inspire by early Calvin Klein looks Like even if it was designer or not designer, it was still look nice and sleek tbh It’s like a future art deco & vaporwave combo but in goth style
I'm 35 and remember this time very, very well. While watching this, all I can think of is The GAP. Walking into the GAP at this time was 100% THIS. I remember buying this silver vinyl vest in 7th grade (98/99) and felt so cool and sleek. 🥴 Futuristic was VERY in. But I'd never go back. Lol
I saw the thumbnail and instantly thought about that song, “All the things you said, running through my head…” 🤣 This micro trend is definitely bringing me back to childhood when my cousins would wear the iridescent eye shadows and fake leather pants lol
I recently bought a Tom ford era Gucci shoulder bag & it has a minimalist, sleek modern look to it, but it captures the 90s feel. I like to style it with my feminine pieces. I’m not a huge fan of the 90s retro futurism, but I could see myself mixing some cool accessories into my wardrobe
Ohh yes Tom Ford's Gucci really captured this moment but his vision and style was so iconic that it transcends this period. Thank you so much for watching❤
Great video, so informative. Gen X Soft Club, never heard of it before, but girl... remember everything! I am Gen X and I didn't even know back then that this was a style, haha.
Yaaaay! You did it! Another informative video on the history of Minimalism's evolution through the decades. From one Millenial to another Mary, you have to stop saying "I don't know" after you speak your truth. You DO know, are very knowledgable, do the work & have a solid understanding of the fashion world you study. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise or be apologetic about your opinions.
Thanks for making a video on this style! Really is very connected to the music, like you say. Came across the CARI pages describing it only recently, but I've been making playlists and trying to wrap my head around it for quite some time. Part of the allure might be how electronic music wasn't as big in the States as other parts of the world, but its influence seeped into bits of culture everywhere, not quite strange but sideways, opaque. And a little sad. I think you're right about sunglasses being another key emblem. For instance, the sunglasses worn on the cover of Ivy's "Long Distance" remind me so much of my Mom's sunglasses from the late 90s...
Yes this look truly does have a sound, that sorta takes me back. I was a bit too young to fully remember it, but when watching an old film or music video, the style is so apparent. Thank you so much for watching❤
Many of these pictures remind me of covers from Wired magazine. I was in my 20s in the 90s and early 2000s. It was a time of innocence in a way. We were able to have private lives.
Loved this video and how in-depth you went in such a short amount of time-but actually-I was wondering if you (or anyone) knew of any other content creators with an analysis of Gen X Soft Club fashion? I gave it a cursory TH-cam Search, but this seems to be the only video covering the style, that isn’t just a playlist of music videos? When you Google the term, it mostly brings up graphic design and photography-with a scarce dash of architecture-but why? Was this style sort of “lost to time” or does it simply exist without a proper title?
The bulk of the content I've found have been on tiktok and doing a google search to find articles. I don't really love the title, I'd prefer if it was just shortened to "softclub" but I didn't come up with it, so that could be why it's not easy to find. It does feel "lost to time" and I think the discussion around this era has been "y2k mcbling" which was more dominant. Thank you for watching❤
im unfamiliar with your channel. after watching this video i’m guessing this is like a women’s fashion channel. im looking for a very comprehensive examination of Gen X Soft Club (cross domain). anyone know of one? something like aesthty did on y2k…

Yes I remember this optimism vividly as a kid. Now I think we are in many ways rightfully so pessimistic. Thank you for watching❤

Yes Coperni is leading this style and so much inspiration to take from them❤ Thank you for watching Kaya!

Love your videos!! I’ll always be a Prada 90s girl! 🖤
Ohh yes, Prada was the centre of this style❤

I definitely see it. Agree, with your point about the innocence and privacy of that time. Thank you for watching Heather❤
