My husband and I are Gen X. We went to the Bahamas and got married on the beach without our relatives so no one could ruin our wedding day for us

We were too young for Saturday Night Fever, we were taken to Grease and Xanadu, and went to Flashdance and Footloose on our own with our own money.

He is referring to his generation at that moment in time. However, time continues to past and people group generations by events that are shared. The years after 1971 shared more experiences with 65-71 than 81-86. Therefore they became part of generation X. This is a very old interview.

This generation lost its optimism. We need to get it back.

Strange that he's putting Gen X as 1961-1971. Wonder if he went back on this later?

Coupland coined the term, in fact, and this (the roughly '61 to '71) was his original intention. What happened is that Gallup or Strauss or whatever demographers came along later to actually name the generation as time wound along, they liked this term so much they co-opted it and used it. Thus the goalposts were moved.

@@myNTlife Journalists often confuse Generation X with the age group that followed Generation X, i.e. the cohort of the “baby-bust” men and women, who were born between 1967 and 1979.

@@Robert_DanielNone of this is set in stone. Generations are an arbitrary grouping of birth year cohorts. We all probably have more in common with one another than we acknowledge .

He was wrong. Gen X is 1965 to 1980.
