- Rigoberto Uran and Mario Cipollini are two riders who have really animated the Giro D'Italia in the last 25 years. Cipollini was a monster sprinter, who holds the record for the most individual stage wins in the race, whilst Uran is a 2 time podium finisher and is never far from the sharp end of the race in the mountains. Whilst the riders differ greatly, one thing they have in common is their bike sponsor: Cannondale. In this video, Ollie looks at the key differences between Cipo's Saeco edition CAAD3 and Rigo's current Supersix Evo Himod.

I own this exact bike. 1998 was when it was released. It came with the dura ace cranks. Not the coda ones. Spinergy wheels were an option.

Still have my CAAD5 and it rides beautifully. Easy access to cables and rim brakes, are perfect for a training bike. Internal routing is a pain in the butt. I think the CAAD 5 was one of the last frame sets from the USA factory, nice to have that connection to its roots. The mechanics in my bike shop Laugh at the bikes age, but honestly, there very few times where I’m dropped because of the limitations of the bike. The industry always moves on but fundamentally things haven’t changed that much.
Totally agree with you. The biggest difference between race bikes 20 years ago and today are gearing. So today you have much smaller gears on road bikes so that everybody can ride them and get into shape.
I have two Cannondales. One 2.8 R800 with upgraded Sram Rival groupset and another Caad 10 with Shimano 105. Caad 10 is to be honest a biy lighter but both bikes feel great to ride, and there is not as nearly big improvment in frame designs as they are constantly saying.
Bike industry keeps insisting on "cycling revolution" when it comes to frame designs but it is not truth. They just need to sell producst.
Cannondale was making and still makes amazing road bikes. I have two of them. One is Caad10 with Shimano 105 and other one is 2.8 R800 with Sram Rival. Even though 2.8 is 20 years older, I see that it doesn't fal behind from newer and more modern bikes. They are both very light, stiff and responsive. I really enjoy to ride both of them...
Definitely The CAAD3 which was the bike that got me into riding a Cannondale which lead me into getting The CAAD12.
Forgot to mention in the intro that Cipo tried and failed to get Gilberto Simioni dropped from the TDF team they shared because he spoke out against Lance / Dr Ferrari, had 25 blood bags in the season he won the Worlds and is currently awaiting trial for stalking and assaulting his ex-wife, inc. claims he held a loaded gun to her head on several occasions. If you mention all the other stuff...
I'm at the point where I don't care about the doping. But stalking and holding a gun to someone's head??

Back then the bikes looked way better, so caad3 all the way.
Just recently grabbed a great condition Cannondale 2.8 R500 from 1996 on Craigslist with the original Shimano groupset which seems to have been impeccably maintained. The fact that it looked like an old steel road bike in good condition for the price was what drew me to it, but I was super surprised by the speed of the bike. Comfort is definitely at a minimum, especially running road tires at high pressure, but I think it's going to be a great around town fast bike and I'm amazed at the speed to power ratio I'm able to get on a 20+ year old bike.
It has King Lion stitched on the seat because it is a literal translation of Re Leone, but Re Leone correctly translated is Lion King.
I remember Cannondale in the late 80's. The tubes on the bikes looked huge back then since we were used to seeing bikes with skinny steel tubes. Now, the old Cannondales look normal and old steel frame bikes look insanely thin.
@David Mansfield I had a first-generation Cannondale frame in 1985. It was quite a conversation starter at the races!..."Hey bring that thing over here! Look at the size of that downtube!!" The downtube on my 1999 CAAD3 made the one on my '85 frame look small!

I'm still riding a CAAD 3 today. Wow... They raced it 23 years ago. Maybe it's time for an upgrade.

I'd opt for the CAD 3 Red Saeco bike, but another tidbit of info... Cannondale also had a red/gold Saeco CADD 7 frame/bike. I own the CAAD 7 frame, and was always a fan of that era bikes. Cannondale also had a CADD 5 frame that was the stars and stripes after 911.Folks rode those bikes across the country raising funds for the 911 victim's families. Always LOVED those US made frames and the history and innovation that Cannondale had at the time. Great video for comparing the two different riders and their bikes... and of course at that time, Cannnondale was a US made bike!
I have them both. What a great time with the card 3 back then! It's still a beautiful bike next to my new super six evo and system six road bikes.
Do you find those oldet bikes more "forgiving" and comfortable for weekend warrior, or the New ones are more comfort?
I would rather ride Cipo's Cannondale, back in the mid '80's I was on a sponsored team and we rode Cannondale I love them!
I raced on a CAAD3 and then a CAAD4 from 1997 - 2000, built up with Chorus 9-speed Ergo and Campag Electron (I think that's what they were called) wheels and then black Campag Shamal wheels. Excellent bikes - really light and stiff. I loved the "Coke Can" down tube.

during the meanwhilst Andy won the Giro in 1988. First Giro win on a Dura-Ace equipped bicycle.
I'have one pair of Campagnolo Shamal black 1999, very special wheels, not superlight wheels, very reactif and suport one atomic bomb, combined with shimano biopace chainrings its a super fast.
Cool video Ollie . Most Italian man ever , nailed it . I would have the Supersix Evo , not as much drama as the CAAD3 , just way more fun to ride as well as so much faster .
I am owning a CAAD3 and it is still a beautiful and fast bike. Ok, it is not my only race bike and I am not using it every day. But I keep it.
I pre-ordered a CAAD3 frame before they hit the market. I ordered it in yellow with Cannondale in black and silver. Saeco hadn't even announced that they would ride Cannondale at the time. I remember I had to wait several months because Cannondale was switching from the 2.8 to the CAAD3 in the factory. I fell in love with this bike and still have it today. I use it all the time and it went through many groupsets and wheels. Currently the bike has SRAm Rival groupset the flashy FSA crankset and chain rings along with a fresh set of CampyScirroco 35 wheels. It has been everywhere. I bought it in Colorado, moved across country, then brought it with me to Spain where I live now in the hills of Catalunya. I have bought other road bikes since but never loved them as much as this bike. I feel like I am riding a piece of cycling history because at the time it was different from the vast number of brands you saw on the pro tour. It was also very affordable. I paid about 400 dollars for the frame and 200 for a LOOK fork. We can't say that now about pro bikes. So, this is why I vote for the CAAD3. In fact, when it turns 30 I will change the groupset to SRAM etap since it will work on older frames. I may even have a birthday party for it.

I would take the cannondale CAAD3 every time. Such an iconic and charasmatic bike with an incredible number of wins thanks mostly to Mr Cipollini. The modern cannondale has not earned such distinction. The bike pictured is using the cannondale slice carbon fork, I believe this came out with the CAAD4 frame in 1999, prior to this it came with a Time carbon fork. I would say the most iconic CAAD3 was Mario's stars and stripes version he used to win stages in the 98 tour with matching shorts that earned him a fine from the race organisers. He was a legend. Also he had his own custom Coda cranks anodised red and other colours as well but not sure if these were on the CAAD3 or other caad Frames he used later on.
He was fined multiple times. I always loved that about him. He just didn't give any f@cks.
@@DaveCM and one of those fines was because he sported yellow bibs while wearing the yellow jersey in a time when it was illegal to wear anything but your team bibs, even if you were a classification leader... He basically started the trend of changing the color of one's equipment to match the leader's jersey!
I still ride my 2009 Caad 9, the thing is an absolute rocket. I smoke by 15k carbon bikes on the regular.
Cad3 gets my vote as well. I had the Magic crank and sold it years ago. Wish I still had it. I have a newer Himod these days but still love my old CAD. The paint jobs in those days were amazing

I still ride A CAAD 5 team Saeco replica. I can't find myself to upgrade, I love that damn bike.

The old Cad is a beauty. However the mid eighties thin walled welded aluminum bikes were known to be a brutally stiff ride.
They were pretty stiff, great for a sprinter, actually, but they were being compared to '80s and 90's steel noodles and would compare favorably today, I think. I have a 1992 Cannondale 2.8 Aluminum frame that I put a carbon fork on and I don't find it harsh riding at all. The cool thing is that those frames were so light for their time that with a carbon fork and modern groupset and HED Jet 5 wheels, my bike only weights 15.8 pounds.

I'm on the tail end of building up a CAAD4 R1000 Aero frame set with modern 105. They're really striking frames.
I have only seen the Cinelli Alter Stem on the CAAD4 frames when Saeco went to Campy from Shimano. Does anyone have photos of the Alter stem being used by the Saeco team on a CAD3? I have only seen restorations use the Alter on a CAD3.

I have a 2004 caad r3000. Its beautiful, has dura ace, weighs 18 pounds, and I plan to ride it for at least the next few years.
I 've bought a Saeco cannondale caad4 , campagnolo set and dura ace wheels in perfect condition for...300€ last summer , really love it , 8,5 kgs, I think I had lot of luck to find it...
My Team Saeco CAAD3 is still the best riding and best looking bike I've ever had!

"Aero hadn't caught on" Two words: Cinelli Integralter. Basically Cipo road integrated aero bars and stem way before Rigo.
Having had the Spinergy , and several other carbon wheelset...the Spinergy above 20mph were really quick...but flexie. They issued braces that crossed the the blades and really made them stiff...but noticeably less aero.
You mix the spinergy generations. They built 5 types of wheels over three main generation. The first one was very flexi. The second had a superstiff version that is crazy stiff way more than anything that exist today. The last ones were the superstiff structure with Titanium axles: the X-team

CAAD9 was the last of the good ones, and still made by American hands. The only thing that I wish they had added to finish it's legacy was standard bb30 and Tapered head tube on all the 9's before switching to CH'ina on the CAAD10 (which got the tapered 1 1/4 heattube and standard bb30). They lost all the characteristic Cannondale traits. Hydroforming and boring tubes took over.

I got an awesome caad3 for super cheap. Mine came with Campanolo record everywhere, absolutely beautiful no Dura Ace or Coda cranks, must havd just been a different model. Unfortunately, mine never had the Spinergy wheels, but the ones it did come with are still sick.
The Seaco was the best looking Pro Tour bike. I had a 6/13 in that livery with Campagnolo. I often wish that I hadn't sold it.
I've got a CAAD3 but with the smaller 650 wheels a bit odd but man I dig it
I fully believe the sloping top tube is NOT beneficial for any aero or stiffness or other mechanical advantage.. I believe it is to accommodate more riders, and thus negate the need to make many different bike sizes. it's about money and many of the mother makers have done the same.
I think mostly Mario had the Dura-Ace crankset, but there are a few pics where it looks like he has the crazy thick CODA crank arm. If I went with the Saeco frame I think it would need the Dura-Ace cranks. They were classic. The CODA cranks were odd, but very typically Cannondale with pushing the innovation. I think I have a Dura-Ace 7700 crank in my garage somewhere still.
Greg Lemond used the SRM Power Meter in 1994 in the 1994 Tour De France, so they did used them before Mario’s time but only by a hand full of riders prior to this era.

I have a 2018 also. When the new one came out, I wish I'd waited, but I am glad I have it. It is such a great bike and I still love the looks.
9:05 right, the answer is that Cannondale was using/testing a bb30 style spindle and crank arms on Cipollini in the form of CODA Magic, long before releasing them for public consumption. The outboard bearing design was to allow the 30mm spindle to pass through the standard 68mm threaded bb. The CAAD4 would get the dedicated BB30 shell and Si crank with narrower Q' factor.

I had a CAAD 4 ( American flag paint job)with shimano 7700 dura ace , and mavic cosmic wheels. My current CAAD 10 is good , but I’m not turning the heads anymore.
I would pick the CAAD 3 bike since the Modern Cannondale Bikes would mostly likely a have bottom bracket problems on their Carbon Fiber bikes. The Cable Maintenance is much easier on the CAAD 3. You would think that the actual bottom bracket is broken but yet it was the manufacturing quality of the Carbon Frame in the place that you installed the bottom bracket that has the poor quality. One side of the bike frame bottom bracket hole would be one size smaller in diameter than the other side of the frame and the pedaling load on the crank and bottom bracket would be uneven. This would be a drive train problem. Hambini's TH-cam Channel speaks about this bottom bracket problem. I remember that the threaded bottom brackets from the early 2000s and 1990s would not have this problem. I also liked the idea that Cannondale used to be handmade in the USA and now the bike factory is in a foreign country. The CAAD 3 was Made in the USA. Cheers!

The classic lines and geometry of the CAAD3 look SO much better than the squashed, compact design of the modern frames. I can't help but think that modern frames always look like too-small toys underneath the riders!

Ollie, How are you?!? I am such a Cannondale fan I wanted to correct a slip to do with Crankset. Uran's Bike comes stock with 52/36, not 53/39 like Cipollini's. In the video, the EF Bike has a 53/42T. I ride a 2000 Cannondale R300 Caad3. Would love to upgrade to the EF bike, but thinking SuperSix 105 Rim brake. What do you think?

American Andy Hampsten, of Team 7-Eleven, won the Giro in 1988 on a Shimano Dura-Ace equipped bike built by Ben Serotta. The team was sponsored by Huffy, which mass produced department store bikes. I love these comparison videos. Keep them coming. I would go for the Cipo bike myself. I currently ride a CAAD 8 Cannondale R1000. I love the retro bikes better than the modern ones. Sorry, I just think they are better looking. I am more of a retro-grouch, anyway. Yeah for flat top tubes!

The best thing is that you can get Pinup girl pictures for those Cinelli stems.
Few things on spinergy. First those ones showed on the video haven’t ever been close to a Cipollini bike. They are the first generation that were crazy flexy. Mario used the second generation in their “superstiff” declination. To have measured those wheels on the lab, they were above ANYTHNG measured in terms of stiffness. In the 70N/mm range (lightweight, Cosmic ultimate and Corima MCC being in The low 60).
On the ban. It was a vendetta from Ambrosio who had, for few years, a deal to put their name next to the spinergy logo for their sponsored teams (Mapei, Festina, Lampre and Rabobank). When Spinergy refused to continue the deal, ambrosio pressured the UCI to ban them.

7700 runs forever (never needs charging), tunable with household tools, trouble-free, and doesn't require a doctorate to maintain. End of comparison.

I've been riding my Saeco CAAD4 since 2001. I've since replaced every bit of it except the frame and fork and have no plans to replace them.
@James McDonald My 1999 CAAD3 has had EVERYTHING replaced except for the brake calipers...I have a lot of miles on that bike, and while it is no longer my "everyday bike", I still love how it rides!
Super Mario is my favourite pro rider. Such a character. I know he has his pitfalls (anything with a hill) but he is just so cool. As such, I'd pick the CAAD, even though the SuperSix is massively superior.

I own a 2015 Cannondale SuperSix Evo with Ultegra di2 and Fulcrum (Campagnolo) wheels. I'd upgrade to a new Evo in a second if it was free. My 2015 weighs in a 6.8kg. Cheers!

Cipollini was the one to perfect the sprint train... Basically everyone in his team was a good enough sprinter in order to lead him out from long before the last km. Nowadays I see most sprinters have a couple of teammates who help them in the leadout, he had 7/8 taking complete control of the peloton from far behind the finish line until he got out with 200 meters to go, hence the track sprint - build.
