It’s live, honey…one thing to understand about Kat-she builds a song starting off light and by the end of the song, she’s punching ya in the face. Like it or not, that’s her style, her signature of sorts. She never ever looks like she’s struggling for the audiences’ benefit. She’s got mutant lungs. I would suggest one of her latest Whitney covers: Saving All My Love for You. Another live performance, blows the roof off the place…Whitney would be proud of the ending…and yes…knock down drag out punching you in the face…with a smile. 😂 🔥

Troy Laureta is an award-winning Filipino-American musical director, keyboardist, and producer based in Los Angeles, California who played alongside Ariana Grande for her The Honeymoon Tour in 2015. His first major projects include working with Disney artists and reality show singers from American Idol and The Voice. His musical style is often compared to producer David Foster, who mentored Laureta. Troy Laureta recorded a version of ARAW GABI with Loren Allred the voice of the movie The greatest Showman song Never enough. The song Araw Gabi was composed by Filipino National artist Prof. Ryan Cayabyab (a conductor, arranger, and songwriter) The song was written for his wife Emmy and was first recorded by Regine Velasquez and was released in August 2005 & was a big hit. Regine started all the super vocal range songs and was an idol of all these young new singers including Katrina. She became a standard for young singers when they joined singing competitions in the Philippines. You have an edge when you can clear-clean a Regine Velasquez song as an entry.

Hahaha... It's clear he has never met a Filipina belter like Katrina or *#RegineVelasquez* who don't strain their faces when reaching galactic high notes. I guess there isn't anyone like that in the west at all, now that i think about it.
Well, first time for everything, man. I'll click like for meeting Katrina. Hope you can remember her (and perhaps her progenitor as well, Regine Velasquez) this time around.
The original version of this song is actually in a male voice and recorded by well known balladeer, Nonoy Zuniga in 1985. The female belting style was popularized by Ms. Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, and you can find a good sample of her version at Wish 107 5. That belting style was like the yardstick used by succeeding fenale Filipino artists who tried to cover this song.
Katrina Velarde style is superbly effortless as she sings. She actually does not need what you say distortion in her facial appearance or too much popping veins to reach those high notes. That is actually the extent of her amazing vocal prowess. This Troy Laureta arrangement nicely complemented Katrina's strong vocal ability.
Try to find her other performances in Wish 107.5, look for her cover of 'Go The Distance' Or other ones in duets or in a group, like her performance with Budakhel - cover of 'One Sweet Day' and ' Thank God I Found You'.
For her duets, look for her duet with Sam Mangubat cover of 'I Turn To You'; her duet with Garrett Bolden cover of 'Forevermore;
her duet with Jessica Villarubin - cover of 'I Surrender' and their 'Air Supply Medley'
There are many amazing power vocalists in the Philippines who sings with such passion, does not need to grimace so much when they sing, because the talent to sing is inherently natural.

First of all i would like to thank you for your reaction, giving time to critique this performance and i openly welcome your opinion.
Now... to give you a context and how this performance came to be... please listen. Theres a lot to unpack here
1. The song was originally done by a male crooner in the 80s a Ballad melodramatic no fanfare straight forward song definitely no hint of explosives if you are expecting one...
Filipino songs or we call it OPM when artist covers them the person covering tends to pay homage to the structure of the original melody of the song in the beginning, so there you wont expect hints.
2. If you pay attention to the setting... there were mics in the drum area im sure there are mics placed in the stage because this was recorded Live. Yes live... i encourage you to visit the Philippines and visit Bars and listen to regular performers work... (with the facial expressions you were asking for) Now why would they bother to put mics if they will work on it in post prod? Westerners do it but in the Philippines... Nope, at the very least expecially with the talent that is Katrina it will be a travesty to work her voice in post prod when she even have one take covers recorded live in her youtube channel.
3. Yes this is easy for her and was made originally for Filipinos to enjoy that the song was cake walk for her that as much as you would like her to work hard for her vocal expressions for the purpose of aesthetics, we Filipinos felt her song through emotions and you said you felt it too despite not knowing the lyrics. Shes that good that the level of the song key would be ruined just to fullfill your wish... this was arranged tastefully. Watch again and review how long she held her breath while climbing up the note...
4. With the advent of social media these videos are championing the level of expertise of talents in the Philipines. Katrina is a professional Pinoy singer and we watched her since she was a little girl singing in contest on TV... in the same light that theres tons and tons of contents in social media from as young as a 2 years old singing good already, Pinoys on gatherings, on karaoke on malls. Its in our culture to sing live. We welcome people in the west to watch our talented performers and convince neysayers that when they see Filipino talented singers... yeah they are really "saang"ing.... peace.

It's very disappointing you don't think this is live. The whole point of this series of sessions is that they are live sessions.
There's actually a lot of videos of Katrina singing live, though some of them aren't good quality since she uses her phone's mic. But here in the Philippines, artists take a really big blow once they start using autotune and lipsyncing, sometimes even losing their credibility as a singer. Music and singing is a very big part of the culture so not singing live is kind of looked down on, especially in the OPM scene.
Can you watch again so that you hear the pauses and the plosives in sync to the singing…It was recorded live!!!

its live man! dont compare katrina to dimash, yes you have a point, if you sing on highest note on live. you might get caught with ugly face, thats your opinion, i'll leave it that to you.. maybe because, as you've said their trying hard to get that highest note.. But Katrina is different, she doesnt need that, she can handle high notes with ease, the higher the easier. and one trivia, Katrina rarely sing recorded, especially her covers, its always live!. with all of i said, it means you dont know Katrina, her world class singing abilities, materful techniques, graceful runs and riffs and known lung power - which she can sing highest notes for about 25-35 secs in one breath (as you witness with this one), with agility on it, with riffs and runs on it, and acrobatic singing style on it, take note- one breath! high notes!, and not to mention, she can also do all of this, even sitting on a chair with ease, doesnt need to distort her face, bend her body just to reach the highest note. take note again- sitting on a chair.
