After importing the ai. as the video suggested, it will appear a folder and a composition file in the project tab. Don't drag the folder to the timeline (that will make all the layers appear on the center) instead double clik the composition file (the one which looks like a film video icon with geometric figures in it), and the layers will appear automatically on the timeline in the correct position.
Ok but I would really love to see a tutorial of how YOU prepare an illustrator file. Not open up one and bam its already cleaned up now you just have to drop things onto their own layers to organize them.
@@ChompStudio I get these well designed infographics that are a flattened image. Now I have to break them apart and animate them. Is there a simpler way other than completely manually redrawing them with pen tools and shapes...etc.

This helped a lot mate. I couldn't remove the white background of an asset without affecting the graphic I was animating. Separating the layers in AI and importing like this solved my problem, thanks very much.
Another example of Adobe making it more difficult than it needs to be. Why wouldn't the default be to retain layer size when there are multiple layers being imported from AI? OF COURSE, we want the anchor point to be in the CENTER of each layer! Duh! Thanks for breaking it down for us, Ryan.

Hey Ramesh. If you change your artwork in Illustrator, and that same project file is in After Effects, any update you do in Illustrator will effect how it looks in AE. If its something simple like scaling, I would do the scaling in After Effects. If its a larger revision, I would duplicate the Illustrator file, and bring the revisions into AE. Hope that helps.

1:49 actually you can just select all the desired objects with move tool, make new layer, and then you'll notice there will be a colored square (depended on what color is your layer) in the right corner, and then drag that colored square to your new layer and boom. You only moved those selected objects to your new layer without the hassle of finding it in a stacked layer. Btw nice video man. Cheers!
I know you posted this a while ago but if anyone sees this and can help me out id appreciate it so much - i follow the instructions here but then when i import into After Effects almost all of the layers are just blank... they show up, but there is absolutely nothin on them and the anchor points are all in the lower left corner of the composition. boy oh boy, so much time of not been able to import the layers separated. I did all you suggested in the movie, but still not. After hours I discovered if you don't safe your AI compatible with pdf, it doesn't import it in AE, pff. now of to work :-) Very clear explanation in the movie, thank you for that.

The anchor point default location is a preference in the preference > general tab
so no need to download anything else? its already built in on after effects?
