My 78 VW Bus has the same problem. I have a new coupler and bushings to install. Everything in my bus that I haven’t replaced is 46 years old and subject to fail at any time. Have fun.😎👍
Hi Guys. Although I've never had to do this I’ve read when parked engine off, select second gear loosen bolts bottom of gear stick then retighten apparently it re aligns the selector. Got to be worth a go. Loving your stories from the other side of the pond.

i have reverse problems on mine i just push down once and it gets out of reverse fully or i wiggle it a bit and go into a few gears until 1st decides to work

Thanks so much!! Hal got under there and apparently it’s ALL messed up. He’s still in the process of fixing it. Haha
Yeah, it's just linkage bushing problem, no big deal. The shifter needs to be adjusted and that's it.

Shift rod bushing kit should fix it up.
