I'm from a border town in AZ but had the opportunity to teach in the RGV for a year. It's such a unique and incredible place and honestly I miss it. They have the best Mexican food, so many kind people, and just so much amazing music, art, culture, etc. I'm really proud to see them represented on a national television show!
It's great to hear from someone who is not from the RGV to say that we have the best Mexican food! Thank you! I have have been to many places, Houston, Austin, etc., and out the state of Texas and the Mexican food is not even close to been good. One time I was at a Mexican restaurant and I ordered carne guisada. Let me just say I was tempted to go into the kitchen and show the cook how to cook it! I now spend most of my time near Austin, but every time I go back to McAllen I already have a list of restaurants I will visit, especially El Pato! And, especially to eat a Botana at one of the restaurants! I do not understand why the so-called Restaurant critics never travel south of San Antonio to eat REAL mexican food!
People in the RGV area only want the good things about the Mexican culture, but see everyone from Mexico as “wetbacks,” and call them that. Hell, they don’t even speak proper Spanish. Guácala con los chicanitos.

I can only recommend it, but I have not much comparison, I just go by what I like. And last year I bought 2 albums from "Flor de Toloache". I wanna mention that I'm German and I always liked Mariachi music.

@MarcoTrosi I recommend you listen to Linda Rodstand- Canciones de mi padre. She was Mexican with Germán descent and was a pioneer for women in the rock scene. She wanted to dedícate an album to her people and her roots so she decided to make a mariachi álbum. Everyone was trying to convince her not to and even her label was against it, but she didn’t care and went through it! It did very well and got a lot of appraisal both from the US and Mexican market! ❤
I just watched the Documentary. So beautiful, so happy they have these programs. It's not the Spanish language necessarily but Mariachi that represents our Mexican roots and heritage well. Highly recommend it.

Being in band was the highlight of my Highschool years, we are all still in touch. I love that there is a Mariachi Band in Highschool, that would have been cool to be a part of. We just had concert band and Jazz band.

Texas is not the only state with mariachi in schools. Im in california and schools in our town have incorporated mariachi class into middle and high school! Im so happy to have that part of our culture being taught to our students now.

WISH THEY HAD BETTER BUDGETS for them as they do other Sports or Academics. People don’t realize how much our state heritage is apart of Mexican heritage. I mean, it used to be apart of Mexico so…lol. At the high school here in Dallas I went to they used to have Folklorico dance. Two of my kids now attend the same high school and they no longer have it. That made me kind of sad. I love seeing this. Also, my daughter is in choir and is in UIL and has won twice!
I think is how to “grito” from “how to scream”. El Grito is the one done during “Mexican Independence” and it comes from “El Grito De Dolores Hidalgo”. “Grito” is the one done during “Charreadas” or “Rodeos” and dances. I think it came from cattle round ups done to make the cattle move/react and it might even have evolved from our Indian/Native American origins since Hernan Cortez tells on his letters of the screams done by natives during their celebrations (specially on the Noche Triste).
FYI.. .The Las Cruces International Mariachi Conference(LCIMC) celebrated its 30th annual presentation in 2023. With internationally renowned performers, one being Alejandro Fernandez, Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán, Mariachi Cobre, to name a few..
