I love James Bond but that was also the 60's. Regardless I still rock the polo under a sweater cuz an oxford shirt is almost too dressy for my casual office.
I think it can work if you are wearing a lightweight cardigan as a layering piece. There is enough visual space between the collar of the polo shirt and the cardigan that will make it look similar to what you'd get with a blazer
I wear polos under crewneck sweatshirts a lot and i think it looks effortlessly cool. I think polos with chunky cardigans work also great together. Its not office look of course but its my go-to for weekend walks or pub with friends ocassions. Other thing is wool/merino sweaters and polos...thats not working for me much
I would agree. I work as a teacher and am not required to dress up at all. Therefore, I find the polos a great alternative to the dress shirt as I don't have to iron them, and they still look formal for my work setting. The sweater to me is a great option as it can be worn with the polo - still looking formal (enough) - yet versatile as during gym classes it can be worn on its own to keep me warm.
I wore a crew neck sweater with a polo week found it was a mistake but a couple of days later I tried a quarter zip sweater with a polo and that worked pretty well
The polo shirt , made it's mark during the early days of the pro tour in tennis, Lat 40's to late 60's packs well and looks good with a blazer, especially if the guy is Lew Hoad or Pancho Gonzalez . 🤓

Today I was at the swimming pool, I swam and after I was done I put on a maroon quarter/half zip with jeans because it was warm outside to remain breathable and to vent my intense body heat. Evening time the same day it got cooler towards the night time I threw on my grey v neck sweater that I had in my bag so I had a popped up straight quarter zip collar with a v-neck sweater and a blue North face jacket on the outside. Breathability of a quarter zip and the true warmth of a v-neck sweater just feels good.
how about the polo shirts with structured collar- under sweater? there are some polos with substantial shirt style collars. i am not a big fan of a regular polo under a blazer but the more structured collar polo is passable. just my opinion. keep up the good work.
Great advice. With a crew & v-neck sweaters I think button down dress or casual shirts works best especially w/ v-necks to keep the collar inside the sweater. If you think the weather will warm up or your office has extreme A/C & heat, full zip or buttoned cardigans are way more practical than a pull over sweater. Also, I like the look of LS polo w/ SC but I think it's wired (not) wrong to wear any SS shirt w/ SC.
What about flipping up the polo collar with or w/o the sweater? Is that still cool? We used to kid the prepsters and say, "Hey, the wind blew your collar up."

For a desk job, in general, I think you can pull off a dressed-up polo, especially when it gets really hot. But it depends, I guess, on your overall style and the office where you work.

When you say suit you mean matching jacket and trousers? Have to say, i'd be against it too, it really makes no sense. you can wear a polo, even a long sleeves one, with a sports jacket and odd pants, to make smart casual look. But if you wanna wear a suit, pleaso do so with a dress shirt, it just looks well put together
it depends on the weave of the fabric. What you call a 'dress up shirt' is probably poplin, which is not very breathable. You can find oxfords with a more open weave tho. or linen.
I have a polo shirt with a standing (oriental) collar that I've worn under a v-neck sweater and I think it works. Haven't tried with a polo with a normal collar, though.

oxford button downs are dumb due to higher maintenance, dry cleaning, ironing. hence polo underneath makes sense. extra maintenance not worth the "fashion".
This advice is a miss to me. Wearing a polo underneath a sweater is not much different from a button-up shirt. Sure, you can wear it wrong, but any sweater that doesn't tuck the polo collar away, like a V-neck, a Henley, a shawl collar, a quarter or full zipper, or a cardigan, will do the trick.

What about a 1/4 zip over a polo? I feel like that produces a much nicer layering option

You could also consider a turtle neck jumper/zip neck jumper as that covers the collar

Bernardo Courrege UNIQLO makes a polo that has a collar structured like a button down shirt (they even have a button down collar version).
