I think the biggest issue with having anything close to hitboxes that match the model is the unpredictability especially through ping. This game is already a game of millisecond reaction time, if you then add a random corner to the hitbox near the centre of the car (Like the tip of the windshield) and you will get unpredictable shots that will create more rubber banding and ghost touches

Some more fun facts about hitbox: Psyonix did try to have accurate model and hitbox, but this was in Rocket League's alpha, alongside a more realistic physics model. The players _hated_ it because the random surface angles where the ball hits the car drastically changed the direction the ball will go. So they moved to "Rectangular Cuboids" hitboxes.
Before the hitbox standardization update, Psyonix deliberately made cloned hitboxes of the Octane, Dominus, and Breakout hitboxes. This is especially apparent with cars such as the Octane ZSR and whatnot. But even more so. Marauder, Takumi, Vulcan, and Proteus were Octane clones while Aftershock was a Dominus clone. They did so to get people _OFF_ of the base cars such as Octane, Dominus, Batmobile, and Breakout. Statistically the most used cars. After that didn't work, then they tried hitbox standardization. But there's also another argument for it, which is preventing arguments for "Pay to Win" by buying superior hitboxes. In fact, the Batmobile and Dominus both sparked that idea, given that Kuxir97 used both cars as his primary when they were released.
There was also hitbox changes _prior_ to this. Octane used to be too tall, Dominus too short, Breakout too long, etc etc. They made these adjustments in v1.16 which is about 2 years before car standardization. So even though you have people who complain about hitboxes now, imagine what it was like when 25%-40% of the Dominus' hood went inside the ball until it finally collides.
Overall, as someone who's played since the game came out, hitbox standardization is objectively better for the game. But we ain't getting people off the Octane, Dominus, Fennec, and Batmobile. There's other reasons for why these cars are the most popular.

So many stupid arguments against more accurate hitboxes. All people want are hitboxes that match the cars better. That's it. Octane, Dominus, Fennec, Skyline, and Batmobile are most popular because their hitboxes match their cars the best. There aren't "other reasons." Hitbox standardization makes sense, but having only 6 hitboxes that are supposed to accurately represent over 150 vehicles doesn't make any damn sense.

I think the idea is that they want demos to really take a player out of the game. Having the ability to look around would allow players to get more information before respawning, giving them a quicker “recovery” and making game sense not matter as much.

Everytime I rewatch this I am reminded why Rocket League is probably the best example of "You will never make the community happy" as you can get.
Standardized hitboxes: Accepted at first, now hated anyways.
Loot boxes: Had to change due to law, community blames the devs anyways.
OG Season 5 banners: Hated dragon banners, Psyonix made new ones cause of how much they were hated, community loved the dragon banners again anyways.
Hard reset: Massively hated at first, now the community has been begging for it for years anyways.
Casual bans: People complained about people leaving mid game, now complaining about being banned for leaving anyways.
Almost every choice Psyonix does is either hated at first then loved, or loved at first then hated. The back and forth of this is def a showing of why some game studios don't listen to their communities when this is all they do, complain about everything and almost never give and praise on the hard work they do, or the times they listen to their community, to then only be hated for it anyways.

2:50 The size change is just the tip of the iceberg though. The positions of the hitboxes and their center of mass also shifted and this was huge. I was a Takumi main at the time and all these factors combined resulted in the car feeling so off for me that I ended up switching cars alltogether.
I do agree that standardized hitboxes are probably better in the long run, but at the time it felt like shit to have your car changed. Like, if they make you use the Octane hitbox anyways, using the correct model to go with it just feels like the objectively superior choice.

I know plenty of competitive games that have a pretty small amount of things that you use at high levels, but imagine if League of Legends standardized 10 champs, 2 for each role and made all other characters just visually different. The player base would drop overnight into the ground. I feel like cutting off modes of variety does not help a game grow competitively. I would it if they had separate game modes for solo queueing or party queuing as well because a lot of the games I’ve played recently where there is a party is almost always someone getting boosted by a higher level player. Just had the thought of a potential way a reset could be done to better help fix ranking:
All players in the first tier of a rank group, ie: Plat 1, Dia 1, Champ 1, get put to 1 game below that rank in the third tier of the rank below. Bronze 1s obv will just stay Bronze 1 cause can't go lower.
All players in the second and third tiers of a rank group all get put 1 game into the first tier of the rank group.
SSLs get put 1 game into GC2 to still keep them ahead of the last season's GCs but still need to work their way back up to SSL for the new season.
All placements must be done solo and no split screening.
This could help take boosted players who were diamond who got carried to high champ, back to the bottom of champ, and if they can't hold up with actual champs, will fall back to diamond due to forced solo q.
This could also help in detecting boosting if after someone does placements, if they are detected to ONLY or PREDOMINITLY party up and their rank goes up several ranks, then its easy to see that they are being boosted by the people they are partied with, since they couldn't rank up much while solo, but suddenly with other people, they can climb the ranks with ease.

the ONLY bad thing they changed was the removal of random painted items from Rocket Pass. I mean they could have made it that its random for every player, but you can see what you are getting for yourself. In f2p season 1-2 it was still random for every player without it showing what you'd get, while that was very much fun, it was kind of unmotivating as you wouldnt know if its worth grinding one more level or not, but it was also qualifying as gambling lowkey so i can understand why its not a case anymore.
And as to that my idea is, the Rocket Pass painted rewards should be **random for everyone** but it should show what you are getting, with a few levels (maybe every 10th) being the same significant item for everyone.

    • @thundercptts1452
      @thundercptts1452 ปีที่แล้ว

I think it's ridiculous they consider the pass as gambling. Its not. You spend a set amount of credits and earn random painted items depending on how much you play. What they should've done is removed the option to buy tiers. Because that's where the gambling is. Rocket pass is ruined now but because its technically only cost me 1000cr for every pass since RP1, I keep buying it. Otherwise I would stop now.

Just an FYI, that's not quite correct. Because you _can_ see your MMR, but only if you're GC1 or higher. But the main thing to say is that if you were below GC, it was _never_ visible. You may be thinking of Legacy Season 1 in 2015, but this wasn't MMR. It was "Rank Points" which very loosely followed your MMR value. They did away with this system for several reasons. The first is how unintuitive it felt for rank points movement. New placing accounts would gain less rank points than they subtracted, especially if they were meant to rise in rank. You could have the MMR of the highest rank in the game, but be 2-3 ranks lower. It would take forever for Rank Points to catch up to your MMR.
And sure, if you want to draw parallels loosely and just say "make MMR visible now" that's cool. But wanted to bring forth accurate information about what actually happened, since MMR was never visible. Whether it's a good idea to make MMR visible, I don't know. Normally, I would say the reason for not doing so is the same as Psyonix's, where people stress out too much about rating movement over a single game. But many, many people including myself use BakkesMod and RocketLeagueTracker anyway. On top of that, the bot situation is likely to result in anti-cheat which would very likely make BakkesMod unusable, so it would be perfectly fine to make rating visible to all players if BakkesMod ceases to function.

The reason I don't like them removing crates is that they replaced them with the free drops which have really ruined black market prices, I remember trading a few years back, having a black market was something to flex about and I was very proud when I managed to trade to one. Now pretty much all non-painted black markets are below 100-400 credits and in extremely low demand. The removal of the crates was obviously not the sole contender to this as the entire trading community has become more fixated on painted wheels and octanes. I stopped trading about a year ago because I felt like everyone just wanted the same items and it became really dull just flipping the same items for way too small margins.

    • @HoraryHellfire
      @HoraryHellfire ปีที่แล้ว

That's not _quite_ true. They knew exactly what happened, they just didn't expect it to make any noticeable difference. To be specific, they created a new hitbox preset called "Plank" and based it on the Batmobile hitbox. More specifically, I think they used the Mantis' hitbox which was based on but not a 100% copy of the Batmobile. Then after standardization, they moved the Batmobile into the Plank preset. When Kuxir complained, they reverted the Batmobile completely out of the preset. It stayed like that for quite some time until a year or two later where they just decided to make all planks the Batmobile hitbox anyway, getting rid of the "Plank" preset. It's now technically the "Batmobile" preset.

8:13 this is why an idea I have would be a revearse reset so everyone starts at the highest rank and as they go through placements those who win get to stay while those who lose slowly drop back down into the rank they belong. So true most would lose their first couple matches that would still leave the higher/better players above while the lower ranks start actually playing against and with eachother until they reached their own respective rank and because of how the season rewards settings go by the end of any of your placements you'd still only have a bronze season reward.

I think a good way to deal with casual bans is to have 3 gamemodes like siege does. have a casual mode where people can leave no consequence. whatever happens happens and nobody can complain bc its casual. then have an unrated mode. this mode is for more serious players who want to play competitive games to the end, but dont want the gams to count toward or against their competitive mmr. i can see a lot of players using unrated for warmups before grinding a ranked session. leaving without ff is punished bc unrateds are supposed to be a more competitive environment. then finally, there's competitive which would basically exist as it does now.

My pet theory has always been that the hitbox thing is the reason why younger players tend to be so much better than older players. Their brains are more flexible with abstract concepts, so they can instinctively grasp the straightforward ways the hitbox interacts with the ball, despite the visual inconsistency.
But for someone who has 30+ years of life experience, their brain will automatically seek to exploit subtleties. It doesn't matter how many times I've done training with the bakkesmod hitbox feature turned on, I'll still always try to hit the ball with just the very edge of the car model, just can't help myself.

    • @HoraryHellfire

They changed for the better. Most cars that were standardized had shit turning radii, the Scarab is the prime example. Others were not largely effected enough. Also, turning radii is actually a poor indicator. The most important is the turning responsiveness which is a separate measurement which was not done until way later in like 2017/2018 by Halfway_Dead (Rocket Science here on YT). At which point, standardizing them improved it.

The biggest problem with the loot box change was not just blueprints.
When we get a BP now we have to pay to use it. Before we would get cool stuff to actually use without paying to use it. About half as much as current BPs that we get but we didn't have to pay.
Prime example is ftp users with over 1k hours that have never spent a dime on the game have very basic looking cars.
Back in the hayday we ask had something cool because psyonix gave it for just playing.
Also after epic bought the game they changed the match maker.
Before epic we never had random match 7 to 15+ win and loss streaks. I spent 3 seasons at D2 to D3 avg and was starting to get champ matches. After epic I dropped to D1. I'm now back up to D3 avg and even got champ rewards last season. I've increased in skill a boatload since epic purchased. We get too many players that should be 2 ranks or more above or below current rank and it throws everything.
Also if you are d3 avg in 2v2 and 3v3 but are say plat 1 in 1v1 and spend 3 hours playing 1v1.... Watch your 2v2 and 3v3 ranks tank top D1 cause the MM thinks you should be plat.

I feel like I was in the minority of those excited for the casual bans to be implemented. Casual is a playlist meant for fun/training purposes while giving you a challenging game with similarly skilled players and the ONLY way to rank up in this mode was to have a full 5 min game with bots playing for no more than like a minute of the game. Anything more and neither team would gain/lose any mmr. So, in practice, I'd have to win close to 75% of my games just for a chance of ranking up due to how many people quit when the first thing upsets them. I became skeptical on this update when I saw the community backlash, but I had hopes that the changes were going to be overall good. The controversy over the casual bans still gets to me. It was the greatest change Psyonix ever made to the casual matchmaking. The people whining about the casual bans were the exact people that created the problem that the bans were solving.
These whiners were the type to leave casual matches the moment they started losing. They would just abandon matches to find/start a new one at the first sign of a challenge. They became such a big problem, that it got to the point where practically every casual match had 4+ leavers. It was practically impossible to have good complete matches in casual because of these children leaving constantly. If you have to leave for an emergency in the new system, you won’t even really be punished for it too. It’s only the children that were “negatively” impacted by this change. @@dragonx23123 There is. But it's basic sportsmanship not to leave games just because you get scored on and ruining the match. This was 70% of Casual matches. Now, an "unfun" Casual match happens much less. Yes, there are throwers now, but at a lower rate than leavers who ruined the matches.
And yeah, I would say most people who don't like the change are childish. It's objectively better for the mode than it was before and targets serial leavers. Coming up with fan-fiction to explain how this could affect a person is childish. If you _are_ affected, that kinda sucks, but you can't expect the world to revolve around you and the niche situation where your internet is bad most of the time or your life is a hellish toss-up of what thing pops up at any moment.

Hitboxes - completely agree, should be standardized and yes the match to the model is sometimes strange.
Crates - nothing to debate, as a whole the gameworld and especially the freemium game industry needed to be put in their place with regards to gambling. So many way to young kids but also adults being lured in.
Reset - There are other ways than hard resets or psyonix's version of a soft reset as the current soft reset system is broken aswell, considering last season reset you had pro's ending up in low gc or even champ here and there. There's no reason to lower everyone's MMR by a 100, if anything it should probably go up instead of down during a soft reset. But you can hard reset per rank, or give players a choice to be reset or not. It's as bad as the nonsense anti-carry, which makes everyone just create second accounts, because no one can play with friends more than 1 rank apart anymore.
Casual - loved this from the moment they did it! Casual was horrible before now at least it's tolerable.
Player count - yes they should have removed it all together. Psyonix has this strange fear of sharing information abou what they are up to (we REALLY need a dev question hour every month or so) but both player numbers and "amazing" add absolutely zero. Just gives people something to whine about.

I think hit box standards are fine but I wish each body had some differences so teams could build a different style of play.
I’d like to see defensive players use the Merc for example because balls shot at it bounce farther. Or the Takumi was faster but took weaker shots, maybe it would be used for dump and chase plays. Maybe the Dom was harder to demo but a little slower etc.

I stopped playing casual because of the ban system. but hear me out: I would play casual because I wanted to have fun and play without hurting my rank trying to test out mechanics I'm learning to be able to see how viable they are at my current skill level in an actual match. that said, if I'm 0 - 5 in the first 30 seconds and can't even touch the ball any time after kickoff, I'm not staying. I stay in ranked because if I don't, it'll in my opinion hurt my pride and my rank more than if I left. (with small and very few exceptions). but casual, if I know it's a hopeless match for me, I'm going to leave. but I can't do that anymore with that damned update, which has also discouraged me from trying to get better at new mechanics, because if I try to do them in a ranked match, I'm just going to get de-ranked because I don't have a good enough handle on it yet. I completely understand the reasoning behind the changes, but... why does it have to affect 1v1s in the first place?? like, it's a 1v1... great... they are kicking my ass and I'm by myself. the only person I'm affecting besides myself is my opponent, and I'm giving them a win and a short queue time. not really a big deal at all.

I never queue for casual games unless I can't due to rank differences with my team. Even before this patch.
    1. Because there's still a ban for casual
    2. Ranked games are consistently better games and matchups, where in casual it's a crapshoot if I get trash players or freestylers.
Therefore when it's Friday night and am I'm drinking, y'all get drunk me in ranked.
Casual literally has no reason to exist anymore IMO and people need to realize that it's all in their head anyway.
Losing a casual game feels no different than losing a ranked one, yet we try to trick ourselves when initially queuing for it. Just to be let down when you win because it was casual and let down when you lose, for the same reason.

I don't think a hard reset is the answer as it takes too long to rebalance. I do however want the season resets to feel more impactful, would be cool if winning all 10 actually put you 2 rank tiers higher for instance so then you can see if you belong up there and if not eventually you'll get put back down. idk if that would actually help or not though but as a champ 2/3 i play against people who from 1 game to the next feel like vastly different ranks and i wonder if if giving the good players a chance to get out of this rank and the bad players in the other direction might fix that. or it will make the problem worse. probably that but i still want to try.

Keep the total mmr distribution the same give a long period of time where each win/loss has a big mmr change like placements are supposed to do. I can't see any solution having 0 chaos as that's kind of the point.

I have no idea how RL works under the hood, but a ranking should keep track of more than just the rank of the player, meta data of the confidence level of that ranking could easily be tracked. If we have a high confidence that your rank is accurate you win/lose fewer points each game. If you beat somebody higher ranked than you your confidence level is lowered which means we don't know if you have an accurate ranking so we move your ranking number more. Soft resets can then keep the rank number but completely discard the confidence level allowing for much greater movement at the start of the season allowing you to get to your correct rank quickly. This could equally be applied if you haven't played for a while, holiday or something, we can lower your confidence level which might get you to your correct rank quicker, if it has changed, but you lose nothing if you are still as good as you've always been. I wrote too much, sorry for the long winded reply.

@@FuzzyLogic0 Rocket League does have a confidence value. It has four values: Mu, Sigma, MMR, and Skill Rating. The last two are essentially the same just at different scales. Mu is the "perceived skill" value. Sigma is the "uncertainty" value. MMR is the value that your matchmaking is based off of, and Skill Rating is the visible value on leaderboards and trackers, but is linearly scaled with MMR (essentially the same). Sigma starts at a high value of 8.333 and caps down to a minimum of 2.5. It scales the movement of the Mu value, so the higher the Sigma, the faster Mu will move. Each game played will drop the value of Sigma, increasing the game's confidence in your rating. This is why smurf accounts can place into Diamond 2/Diamond 3 with 10 wins in a row due to the high uncertainty. It takes roughly 60-120 games played in that playlist for Sigma to cap.
Nothing raises Sigma except Soft Resets though. Soft resets raise it by 0.5 or 1.0 up to a maximum of 3.5. This makes soft resets more efficient and placing where people belong.

I agree with hitbox updates. It just made Rocket League into Octane/Fennec League. RLCS is becoming so boring, because it's everyone using the same cars/designs/etc.
Millions of possible car/decal/boost/trail combinations, and the top 100 players use the same exact cars, designs, etc. Very few hitboxes match actual car design now, and thus all pros gravitate towards the cars thay best fit the limited hitboxes.
Bring back individual car hitboxes, and introduce a bit of variety to the RLCS scene.

regarding smurphing and freestylers hanging out in low ranks.. It seems to me that the easy answer is to change MMR based on your score in the game, not just whether you won or lost. If some freestyler wins 12-0 against a silver who never touched the ball once and then forfeits at the end to stay in low ranks... their mmr should be boosted just like it would from a win. a forfeit should end the game, not give you a loss whenever you want one.

You don't have to worry about your rank, you don't have to worry about losing, you don't have to worry about having to leave early. Now, if you go into a game of casual, there is no guarantee that you can leave without being pusnished.
Even worse, by banning people for upwards of several hours, this change encourages people to grief (throw or troll their teamates) so they can leave sooner or so they are entertained while having to wait for the game to end.

Your point about "banning people for upwards of several hours" only occurs if they are leaving _repeatedly_ , something they deserve _because_ they ruin matches by leaving games.
You do have a guarantee of leaving without being punished. The first leave is free. The second one is only 5 minutes. If you leave and need something to do there's a low chance you'll be done in 5 minutes. The third is only 10 minutes, which is also really low.

@@HoraryHellfire Right, the several hours was exadurated for effect. It seems that we agree that it is less committed than ranked, but still has the elements of committing that remove some of the leisure. It just seems like we have differing opinions on how much is to much.
To me, 1 punishment free leave doesn't seem like enough, since I will never want to use it. What if the next game is even worse? Then should I just accept my fate? Im just never going to use it. Is that a gallacy? Probably. Does it matter to me? No. Maybe it would be better if you had 2 or to per day. Also, the fact that her doesn't tell you that it is free from punishment will always have me nervous. So also maybe if they actually told you when it was free.
Also, I think this draws too much away from the relaxed feeling of casual, since you have to concede, which is basically just forfeiting. It makes casual feel more like ranked, even if the consequences arent as strict. And, that, I think detracts from the experience too much to be worth it.

I think that's just a you problem. Not wanting to use your free leave is quite literally not using the tools at your disposal. A tool that can help you have more fun even if it might not work for every match you play. Not sure if it's a fallacy, but it's the same thing as hoarding potions in RPGs. "Got to save them in case I need them" instead of actively using them. Of course, I actually _do_ hoard potions in RPGs, but I don't worry about saving my free leave in Casual.
I don't think giving 2 free leaves is good. It's good for people who want to quit, it's not good for people who want games to be played as intended and finished. Psyonix were targeting people who quit too much.
