    Great job. Turned out really well. Can you please tell me what type/size of screws you used for attaching the tent? Do they have a big head or washer? Thanks. Enjoy the tent!

    add a metal plate at the internal of the U joints ... you will avoid that tightening the bolts strips the wood ;-)

    Any idea where you finished up weight wise? I want to build one but need to make sure my car can handle the weight.

      It ended up being 130 lbs with the mattress and bedding. Fairly similar weight to a store-bought roof top tent. 👍🏻

    Just out of curiosity, do you know an estimate of how much the tent weighs? Sorry if you said it in the video series and I missed it. I was thinking of doing this myself but don't want to exceed my honda pilot's roof rack limit.

    Hey man, sorry if you mentioned it, but what thickness is your mattress? And how are you guys liking it? I am going to be making a very similar tent pretty soon on my channel and i want to get some opinions on different thin mattresses. Thanks!

      It is a 3inch memory foam and super comfortable! It does have a lot of movement to it (Almost to much "memory") so we would suggest going for something with maybe a little more structure.

      @@TheJoshAndMelissa Awesome! Thanks for the quick reply. I'll take that into consideration. Doesnt need to be luxurious or anything haha.

    Hey man! this is soo cool! I'm planning to build it too, but I'm a little bit concerned regarding waterproofness. Have you tried yours during rain? thank you!

    • @TheJoshAndMelissa
      @TheJoshAndMelissa  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We haven’t tried it in the rain yet. We live in SoCal, so we don’t get rain very often. However, it should be waterproof because the fabric is waterproof, the wood has an epoxy coating, and there’s a raised channel around the bottom. If you wanted to make it more waterproof, you could add a little awning over each door.

    okay, but does it stay open while you're driving? whoever isn't driving could just sleep on top haha

    Great build ! One small suggestion would be to flip the strut upside down. The damping at the end functions better that way and the rod stays lubricated.

    Talking is way too low, so I turn up the volume to hear you. The music starts, and my ears bleed...

    It looks like the tent sits inside the lower box. Feels to me when it rains the water would enter the box? I.e. you'll be sleeping in an aquarium then? How was this solved?

    Wonderful what kind of wood and how much length and width

    Whoa, this is awesome. We have very similar builds and I'm about to mount mine to my 4th gen 4runner as well. It's almost done! I'll make sure to link it to you.
    Also, I laughed when I saw that your foam was a little bit short just like mine. The bug net on the hinge is genius!

    I had this exact idea if build my own roof top tent with plywood box, but never materialized because I got myself into van conversion. Great to see some have done it it looks great.

    • @TheJoshAndMelissa
      @TheJoshAndMelissa  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have always wanted one and now we have a ton of extra time so we thought it was a good time to give it a try! We don't notice any extra wind noise when we drive which is super exciting!

    It looks like you moved your gas struts again? They are similar to how they were the first time you put them on. I might have missed your reasoning behind this. Outstanding job on this build! Looking to make one for the roof of my Polaris Ranger :)

    • @TheJoshAndMelissa
      @TheJoshAndMelissa  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are 36 inch, 80lbs struts. Here are the ones we used:
