I'm certain that this game requires no introduction. If you've never heard of Streets of Rage (AKA Bare Knuckle), then you must have been living under a rock!
Streets of Rage is a side-scrolling beat 'em up released for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis console back in the early 1990's. The game takes many design cues from Capcom's "Final Fight" that had been released in the arcades in 1989, but was designed specifically for the home console market.
The story follows the exploits of three renegade cops who are out on a mission to topple a crime syndicate operated by the mysterious "Mr X". The game simply requires the player to traverse each level and to beat the living snot out of any opponents that get in the way.
Three different characters are available to select, each having different advantages/disadvantages over the other two. A big draw of the game was the simultaneous multiplay co-op, where you and a friend could team up and crack skulls together.
It's not often that I can say this, but the actual gameplay mechanics are next to flawless. The controls, hit detection and gameplay are excellent; the coders who put this together really polished this to perfection.
Probably the most striking feature about the game, however, is the fantastic musical score composed by Yuzo Koshiro. From the moment that you hear the pulsing beat of the opening level, you knew that this was going to be good.
The game went on to spawn two sequels, plus conversions for Sega's 8bit Master System and Game Gear handheld console.
There isn't much more that can be said about the game that hasn't be said already. A classic that is still fun to play today.

I remember seeing this going in Virgin Megastore. My mind was made up instantly that the Sega Megadrive was the 16-Bit console for me. Mt brother and I use to beat this on Hardest with no continues - that was our rule! One the best game soundtracks ever written.

In my opinion probably the best soundtrack to any Megadrive game, great work and it's good the game also happens to be an absolute classic.
Yuzo happened to be one of the guest artists on Chris Hulesbeck Turrican Anthology. Unfortunately i have not heard his cover as it appears on Vinyl only.

Playing these games years later on pair of good (B&W) bookshelf speakers and a PC with a decent soundcard, you get to hear a lot more detail in the music. Speakers in TVs have always been rubbish, but we'd have played the game on late 1980's rubbish (so doubly rubbish!) ;)
