I like the little Top Gear references like 11:24 Jeremy's "Yeeeessssss" then the 4:42 "I've bought a reversing horse" (train for this situation) and of course 12:26 "speed is everything, speed is good"
The 844 has an estimated top speed of 130+ it is actually faster than mallard but the track speed limits and the laws won’t let the locomotive run free but hopefully someday they can get it to melt the rails going 130
The 844 was built for speed, on the flats it can pull 26 pacinger cars over 100mph. It can get from Cheyanne to Salt Lake City in just 10 hours. Also since coal became more expensive it now runs on recycled engine oil.
Charlie I run a miniature steam engine and we use diesel fuel not recycled engine oil. And with an engine that has a operating pressure of more than double of a live steamer I don't think they would use something that would provide less heat and wouldn't burn as well.
Oh When I was younger I saw on history channel there TV show, and he did check out this train, yes it does run on oil, but in the show they used recycled engine oil.
She's a high speed engine operating near 300psi of superheated steam. Back then they would run 100mph passenger trains across the plains. She is an oil burner, she used to be coal but converted to oil because of cost. Oil is more abundant in the west to midwest and not to mention coal cinders would start fires easily because of the dry environment of the area. Union Pacific just finished the FRA mandated rebuild last year. Now Union Pacific is working hard on getting 4014 rebuilt to running condition and it would be the first time a Big Boy ran since the 1950s
Coal is extremely expensive without a doubt. In fact, for Grand Canyon 4960, its fuel goes straight from the frying pan and into the fire, for it is powered by waste vegetable oil.
Rules of driving an American Union Pacific steam or diesel 1: Keep calm 2: Keep the regulator on 100% 3: Don't unhook the train 4: (Optional) Keep the throttle up 5: Repeat if everything isn't working. Btw, good video.
844 did run off of coal I believe for its first year, but was converted too oil fairly early in its life. Most of union pacifics steam locomotives in the later years where oil burners except for big boys
you do realise the 844 was built for speed?????? that was the whole point in making them, the model was made for cars/flats to be pulled at 100mph or above consistantly.
Literally was designed to go 90 over long distance with a full consist, and exceeded ALCO and UP’s expectations. These could pull 1000-ton trains 100mph and reach speeds in excess of 120mph. They’re among the best all around locomotives ever built, steam and non
The 844 is called and FEF 3 northern class. Also the 844 is the only locomotive never to have been retried by a class 1 railroad. The 844 was also the last steam locomotive to be delivered to the union pacific.
When climbing grades with a steam locomotive, maximise steam pressure through increasing draft, begin the climb with a high speed, and keep the cutoff minimized to save steam.
I can give you some facts on the 844 1, the 844 is the only steam engine in America that was never pulled from service, 2: the reason the 844 has no coal in the tender is cause UP turned it in to a oil burner, that's why there is no coal, and the reason we are using oil a lot more then coal is cause of 2 reasons, 1: we got a lot of oil down here, 2: coal got to expensive, and that is your history lesson on the 844
OH MY GOSH! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR DOING THIS! YASSSSSS!!! 🤗 also it is called "UP 844" its sister is the Challenger. When you go up hills, less you use the throttle, the better. Downhills, put the regulator in reverse and slowly apply steam, it slows the train fast.
Just a Fun Fact back when the UP 844 was first built it could almost rival mallard where the UP 844 could safely handle 120 mph and still can handle that speed today.
Not every steam locomotive runs one coal they can also run on wood. And. Recycled motor oil. Because many places out in California started converting them over to oil burners. After some coal fuleing stations were torn down before ww2. With the great depression people were struggling to make ends meet. But the true fact about oil burners go in for inspection quicker than coal or wood burners. Thats why many are on display als the fireboxes in oil burners over time develop cracks in the firebox.

Also if your wondering I run the 25, 22/Inyo, and the glenbrook at the Nevada state railroad museum. Also 29 and 18 on the Virginia and trukee railroad.

The thing about American Locomotives and hills is that they were designed for it. If you wanted to get up the hill without losing too much speed you could have put the reverser to the max and it would have done at least 20-25 up the hill.
The problem with putting the reverser to the max is that as the speed increases, you rapidly use up the boiler pressure, which is the main reason you end up slowing down instead of going faster. Instead, you should reduce the reverser percentage as the speed increases, so that the boiler pressure stays close to 300psi. Do that even when going up hills. Basically, if the boiler pressure dial on the F4 HUD has turned red, it's time to reduce the reverser, but if it's green and getting close to 300psi, you can push the reverser forward again.
The 844 runs on recycled diesel oil. Also we Americans are NOT obsessed with burning fuels. It was too expensive to have the 844 run on coal so they had to switch to the alternative cheaper option.
844 was converted to oil in 1946, shortly after the end of WW2, because of the nationwide coal strikes that threatened reliable supplies of coal to the railroads.
Hey LaZeR JET thanks for reviewing the up 844. The steam engine was made to go about 110 mph. And can you please do a race with the 844 and the daylight... awesome video by the way. I've seen this train in real life (hints my account picture)
gameoholic1994 No. It only did 126mph because it went down a steep hill when it set the world record. The Mallard is an LNER Class A4 steam locomotive, and all of their top speeds (including the Mallard's) were only 90mph.
Ok I am an American that runs steam locomotive. So I am going to help you out a little. You can't just pull out on your throttle all the way at the beginning. You have to work your way up. Use you cylinder cocks also to start. They are the steam coming out of the cylinders. It helps it cycle. He "reverser" you call it is called the "Johnson bar" over here start all the way forward and the notch it back slowly on flat ground. For grades make more fire if you can to keep up your steam. Also whistles over here are as follows 1short-stop 2short-forward 3short-reverse 1long- coming into station. And long long short long for crossings. Any other questions let me know.
He's running the "HUD-enabled" version here, which has a less realistic (but easier to use) throttle simulation. There's also an "Advanced" version which is truly advanced and has a very realistic simulation of the throttle, steam chest, individual valve events (admission and exhaust valves opening and closing) on each stroke of each piston, accurate back pressure, etc. That's the one that I think you'd find the most satisfying to operate.
The 844 used to run on coal but that got too expensive so they canged it so now it runs on recycled engine oil,but its meant to carry a giant water tank behind it.and it only does rides to the rodio every 2or3 years (not too sure)
it wasn't because of expenses, all the FEF-3's were converted to oil shortly after being built... and no, it's not "meant" to carry the aux tender, but it *can* if they want it to, it's convenient for modern operations with it
It's a 4-8-4 and it was built for speed with other thing the were designed to go 110 miles per hour unlike mallard who didn't have a speedometer 844 is still running
844 was converted to an oil Burning Loco when coal prices got high and 844 was the only locomotive to run with out Retirement + do a triple race with NW 611 vs UP 844 vs Sp 4449 Daylight
611 doesn't have to be in if its not available but doing some type of triple race with the american steam locomotives that are still here today would be nice
