  • I highly recommend watching NEO's video: • Are Card Shows even wo...
    The TripleCrown24 TH-cam channel is focused around one dealer's journey through the hobby via card shows, discourse with fellow hobbyists, and grading submission reveals. Today's video recaps the buy/sell/trade transactions from my most recent card show.

    This happens with a large majority of "live streaming for $" people I've seen... Twitch, youtube live, etc... Streamers call them 'whales'... a minority that contributes a majority of the $ they pull in... I think it's almost ubiquitous in how common that scenario is.
    Thanks for sharing!

      That makes since with many of the repackers streaming live on similar, if not the same, streaming platforms

    Repacking is actually good for the hobby in a way too because the consumer is reinvesting into the hobby rather than the money going into packs with these corporations

    • @TripleCrown24
      @TripleCrown24  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My only counter point would be that in order to have cards of the hot new players and products for the repacks, someone needs to open the original packs. Now if the repacks are bringing in more hobby dollars than the breaks or boxes, that's a different story.

    TC, next time someone says they are paying 80% or 85 % eBay comps say ok, tax and shipping included too right ? These people are committing highway robbery. If a card is 1000 on eBay and sales tax is ~$70 and shipping is 5 they should be paying 85% of 1075, that would be fair. Not 85% of the base price.

    • @TripleCrown24
      @TripleCrown24  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The tax part I usually waive because as a trade off, I don't have to pay eBay fees. Now if the buyer brings up the latter, then I might come back with the sales tax. Shipping though I certainly factor into my prices. I view a $20 card with free shipping the same as a $15 card with $5 shipping, buyer is still paying $20. Thanks for watching!

    The volume is in ultra modern. Good luck finding rare 90s cards at shows or replacing that inventory

    • @TripleCrown24
      @TripleCrown24  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is true. The repackers are not targeting 90s cards though, they want current players for the most part

    For the WhatNot part, I can tell you alot of the bigger sellers are not at 12%. I know some that are 5% and below (I heard a few selected are well below the 5%). This is part of a deal they have with them.

      @@TripleCrown24 It depends on the person and probably the following they bring at first, then they look at a threshold. I only know what I was told from a few people who have it. It deals with how many times they run lives and some said amounts.

    I really think the repack phenomenon is caused by Whatnot. People that were scrounging up all the retail 3 years ago to flip are the some of the same people. They went from flipping retail,to trying breaks and when the money wasn't there for retail breaks anymore now it's repacks. Like you said they all can't keep it up so the smaller ones will fall by the wayside and it will be on to something else. The market, even with apps like Whatnot and TikTok can't sustain too many people doing the same thing.

    • @TripleCrown24
      @TripleCrown24  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Totally agree with your assessment! There is probably significant overlap in retail wax flippers and present-day repackers. The opportunities for profit in the former started to disappear when too many people were doing it, some bad actors got involved (e.g. fights in the parking lot over prizm blasters), and companies decided to raise prices to keep more profits in house. Unless the hobby continues to grow with new buyers and fresh money, specifically in the area of breaking and repacking, I think there should be another too many cooks in the kitchen scenario playing out soon. Time will tell!

    I watch a lot of these and here is the issue with some inexperienced repackers wanting part of the action is speculating more than they should. They spend good money on what they assume will be "hot names" leading to the start of a season and by the time they gather the number they need, the cards values are cut in half. So if they paid $100 for Sam Howell when the card was $120, weeks later, that card is $60 and that's one of the "better hits". The football class in general sunk many repackers in this fashion with a dozen or so duds. I watch so many buying another to catch up, just like a gambler does to hit that "big card".

    • @TripleCrown24
      @TripleCrown24  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Fantastic insight! I've heard of some repackers put the date on the packs to reference when they determined the values. That way if there's a few week stagger between acquisition of inventory and running the repacks, any potential increases or decreases in value can be explained. To me, I'd want to turn those cards around ASAP because you never know when that bad sale is going to pop up and force you to alter course on your repack. Then again, I'm not convinced a lot of these guys really stick to their morals and value their cards as they do when negotiating at my table.

    It was like you read my mind. I was listening and thinking "who the hell buys this stuff," only for you to go into that. I try my best not to use absolute terms, but I literally know NOBODY that buys these. Thankfully, the way I collect, this doesn't affect me in any way. I'm not into ultra modern, or any of the big three sports. WINNING!!!

      @TripleCrown24  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Same here, Kin. I don't know many people who buy into these other a couple of guys every now and then. They certainly aren't in that "whale" category, though. It seems to be mostly nameless, faceless people...perhaps it's that way intentionally for some reason? This rabbit hole might go much deeper, who knows. Thanks for watching!

    Feel like the bigger point is Whatnot itself an enjoyable platform before is now the shadiest place in cards with a network of dealers working together to pump and ripoff uninformed buyers. It’s sad to watch.

    • @TripleCrown24
      @TripleCrown24  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The concept of the website/app is great and I'll give credit where it's due, Whatnot does listen to feedback and make changes users of their platform actually want. Unfortunately, you are right though, there are some bad actors who have carved out a nice little niche for themselves there.

    This is one of my bigger complaints of the hobby, why are so many people worried about how others are spending their money? As far as dealers getting pissed about not having cards to buy. Just sounds like sour grapes to me. Stop being cry babies, “repackers” or “collectors” or who ever, if someone buys it before you, too bad.

      As I stated, I'm not concerned how people spend their money. Again, as stated in the video, I hope this is discretionary income that doesn't cut into life essentials, but it's not my business either way. Right now, for me at least, the two big questions I have are how long is this sustainable and where exactly do these repack cards go once people get them out of the repacks?

    the guy who was complaining, was looking for very specific cards. Of course going to a card show is worth it. If you talk to people, go the extra mile, and put in the work, you will be happy. If you just want to complain and hope cards fly into your hands, you will not be happy.

      Did you even watch Neo's video? The main point of the video was dealers getting cleared out before the show even starts, sometimes in the parking lot, and them not being able to restock bc repackers are also clearing out those walking around.
