The first 9 min of this episode is classic example of what I deal with 90% of the time when people visit the shop wanting to sell their cards. Thumbs UP from The Card Shop in Bastrop, Louisiana
I can imagine. I see a ton of this stuff on FB market place and they normally picked out. I'll buy em when it's dirt cheap so I have something to do late nights.
Yep every time when I set up at shows and at the shop I’ve been a part of before tons of junk collections and honestly people who have stolen stuff bringing garbage, I always feel bad for the people like Harold who just innocently don’t know how bad it actually is though
The irony of meeting a man at the start of the video born in 1933 and ending the video with the man with the best collection of signed cards from 1933 is amazing. Please let us know when Marty's book comes out. The guy should have his own TH-cam Channel. Another GREAT video by you guys!
Funny thing is we had a "card Collectors Club" in Middle School in the early 90s and the teacher who ran that school club was a believer in writing fan letters to players and all 7 of the members of the club starting writing letters, I personally got back 4 autograph replies. Troy Aikman, Andy Pettitte. Haywood Jefferies and Mike Stanley were guys who responded to me and it was the greatest feeling in the world to receive those letters/Photos/auto back. 30+ years later it is one of those reason I still collect today.
Great episode!!!! Ty, I thought you were so kind and respectful towards Harold. You listened to him and tried to explain the “junk wax” era. You even offered him gas money. No way you could have handled that situation any better. Props to you and your team. I so like the story of Marty’s collection and his passion for the 1933 autograph Goudey’s. I would love to read his book when it comes out. Thanks Ty and team for putting in all the long hours to bring us some really neat shows. Your dedication to the hobby and sharing people’s stories and their cards is awesome. 😊
Love that he says that TY brings these cards back to the collectors world and hopes they find their forever home . There will always be that one holy grail card for someone out there. That is why we keep chasing cardboard!
Such an enjoyable watch. From the interesting history that Harold was a part of to Marty's incredible passion for his collection. You cant help but appreciate the meaning behind how he collects and what he collects. It truly is all about community in this hobby. Great job guys!
It brought me to tears...I actually cried...lol! One can't help but feel the passion Marty has for his collection, hobby, and community. And then there was Harold and his story. Truly the best episode yet!!!
@CHASING CARDBOARD I really appreciate the professionalism.. This should be on a Tv channel like the History channel a program like this will go a long way and its very much needed for the hobby and for the young Kids to learn...and have something to do and stay off the streets. You have my VOTE to make this a history channel program. 1000 precent...
This is my 1st time watching one of your videos n I just want to say thank you, as a collector of 30+ yrs in & out n most recently in that was an amazing look into wat it means to b a collector of cards i really appreciate the time spent n look forward to seeing more from you …
Just wanted to say that my son and I really love the card chasing but also the real life stories in each episode. Love the content! Keep chasing those rare finds. Cards too!
Wow I would love to see more of Marty. His stories are freaking awesome!!! I can relate with him writing to players in the early 90's up until now. Incredible episode!!!
I had that same Book as a child. Wrote to various players back then. I do it now as a grown up. It's called TTM. You get some great answers from Ball Players and Football Players when You ask questions.
I give u credit man u handle that very well. I have been in that situation many times and it's tough u don't want to offend someone but also ur not just going to give away money,.when it comes down to it ur running a business. But u can handle people with decency, exactly the way u did. So thumbs up to u my brother.
I started doing through the mail autos 2 years ago, it's so great. I'm working on 1960, 1988, 1989 Topps especially but any cards are so cool to get in the mail. Every day I can't wait until the mail comes, it's always a surprise
I used to send red wings players letters with cards to be signed to the stadium. Not always, but often times i would get my cards back signed. Its an awesome childhood memory of mine. Hockey players are classy people, and i appreciate the effort they put in to engaging with kids.
Brilliant episode! Well done, Ty, and the CC team - and, let's not forget, the two gentlemen featured in the episode. The first chap is doing very well for his age! He might have thought that you were trying to pull the wool over his eyes, which wasn't the case. Marty has a brilliant collection, and the right mentality! He's an inspiration, and I hope he continues to expand his collection for his enjoyment, and for future generations - and hoping he smashes his goal of completing his book. Fantastic!
Hey my man in the beginning is from Batesville, I'm about 15 minutes from there! And that collection is 99% of what I've found in the area, straight junk wax....
LOVE TO SEE TWO PEOPLE GET TOGETHER WITH THE SAME COMPATION FOR SPORTSCARDS AND CONVERSE THE WAY YOU TWO GUYS DID. GREAT VIDIO, REALLY ENJOYED THIS ONE MORE THAN ANY OTHER ONE IV'E SEEN. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
I enjoyed the episode even though I'm not a fan of slabs. I'd rather use the funds I have to buy more cards instead of spending money on grading fees hoping for a magical arbitrarily biased grade. PSA is a mega monopoly. We need competition in all areas if the hobby is going to survive long term
This guy really knows what he’s talking about. I wish one day I would have as much knowledge about something in the Sports Card world to be like this guy.
Hell of an episode here - been starting to lose my passion for collecting because it's nothing but a haggle and card show/influencer/repack mentality out there trying to make a buck. This guy and his collection are inspiring for sure - and great to see he is a true collector not concerned with the "bottom line" like so many are now.
I absolutely love this episode. My son Wyatt and I started writing to players about 2 years ago and we love the experience. I spend my breaks at work organizing cards and writing some letters to send. The coolest story is we sent a letter to Scott Bailes who now works with the Springfield Cardinals ( the AA affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. A week after we got the cards signed through the mail, we took Wyatt to a clinic for kids at Hammons Field in Springfield and we were quite surprised to see Scott Bailes talking to the participants. I approached Scott when things were winding down and I asked him if he could meet with Wyatt and how he was the one that sent the letter. He said absolutely, and after the event was over Scott went to the dugout and grabbed a baseball to sign for Wyatt. I took a picture of them together and they talked for about 10 minutes about the letter and baseball in general. It truly was an incredible experience and we now have those memories to last a lifetime.
You should've took a picture and gotten an autograph from Harry since he played with Ernie Banks back in the day's. Who would've known that he played baseball in that Era with one of the greats. Something that you could have for your own personal collection on your travels of chasing cardboard. I love the content and keep doing what you're doing for the whole sports cards collectors and seller's 🙏💞💪💯🧿 thanks for everything
Definitely sensed he was offended at $200. I had an older couple where their son owed them money and they had his cards. I knew it was 1990-1992 basketball. I didn’t even take any $ as I knew I’d just offend them. I showed them an article about junk wax and the prices in ebay for the sets and told them to give em to a grandkid or a neighborhood kid.
Great video, Ty. Felt bad for Harold, I think he was hoping his wife had a worthwhile collection. Offering to pay for his time and gas was very generous of you. Now Marty collection and story were amazing. I hope he will complete his Goudy collection it will be an amazing project to complete. Thank you for doing what you do for the hobby and sharing with everyone. Keep on collecting.
Life is short Marty, sometimes shorter than we expect. Get that book done! I'll be at the Hall in 2033 if that set goes on display. Great stories, unbelievable collection.
@CHASINGCARDBOARD seeing the passion he poured into that 33 goudey set and the responsibility he feels in guarding over those cards is heartwarming. I recently purchased some of the cards Mike Moynihan was selling. I feel honored to hold cards that Mike felt important enough to collect. They are already a cherished part of my collection. Thank you for repping the hobby the way you do brother. It's an honor to support you my friend.
I totally feel ya. We own a card shop here in Michigan and it’s always tough when people bring in their cards from the junk wax era. I tell them I wish you had a 5k card here and I was giving you cash for it 🙂
I remember back in the 90’s when I was in elementary school I got a book at a book fair that had pro athletes addresses so that you could write to your favorite ball player. I spent countless hours writing to every athlete in that book, and the only responses I got were from Atlanta Braves players. David Justice, Ron Gant, Otis Nixon, and Fred McGriff. From that point forward I was and still am a Braves fan.

Haha I didn’t even notice that! Wow
Wow those stories of him writing playing and making friends and connecting old friends seriously one of the most amazing stories

The guy from AR is what the hobby needs more of. What a solid dude and great collection. Thanks for sharing!
Wow, you guys outdid yourselves… this is instantly a classic episode- can’t wait for Marty’s book! Incredible.
Marty has an unbelievable vintage collection
Love that he says that TY brings these cards back to the collectors world and hopes they find their forever home . There will always be that one holy grail card for someone out there. That is why we keep chasing cardboard!

Too bad Mike (Baseball Collector) was not in this episode. He would've loved hearing these great stories in person.
I was the one who traded the psa 10 Lebron Spx pack; awesome to see that as part of the deal!
Just off that phone call, I'm just as excited for the rest of the video...
Love the videos man
This is exactly why I am a Chasing Cardboard fan. Love the stories and Marty has some great one. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Wow, great episode. Marty is a great collector and curator, and I could listen to him all day long.
I would def read his book once published.

Can I ask how you're getting a hold of those that are retired? Just sending them to the stadium/offices of the main team they played for?
even though the late 80s and early 90s card arent worth much, it was a glorious time for card collecting
