- ‘Stand by Me’s River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O’Connell and Wil Wheaton spoke with ET in 1986 about how they got along behind the scenes of the Stephen King adaptation. Phoenix admitted, ‘We had our bad moments.’ O’Connell shared the frightening memory that got him to look so terrified in the iconic scene where he’s running from the train on a trestle bridge.

Timeless. One of the greatest movies of all time. I often wonder how many other amazing performances River Phoenix would have been turning out nowadays.
I think he would be like a cross between his brother and Leonardo di caprio, and probably unstoppable. Rip river.

@@melanistar I actually remember reading something years ago where Leo DiCaprio said he’d always lose out on roles to River. Don’t know for sure if this is a fact, but I believe River was an original pick for The Basketball Diaries, due to him being a fan of the book, and that it went to Leo after River died. Not only that, I also read that James Cameron had River in mind to be the lead in Titanic when he originally conceptualized the idea for the movie years before he started production. So in reality, DiCaprio’s career is only his career because of River Phoenix’s passing, which is mind blowing to think.
@@RINI329 i mean im sure Leo would have still done well but probably not the same career he had bc river passed. I think you are right about Basketball Diaries. I have read quite a few biographies about both actors (being a female slightly younger, I had huge crushes on both growing up) River was also cast in Interview with a Vampire, and that role ended up going to Christian Slater.
@Rinilags03 actully River didn’t want the role because he didn’t wanna play teens anymore . He turned it down
This movie really embodies most young boy's friendships with each other. Something special that just can't be explained. Fantastic storytelling.

This movie is timeless, iconic, hilarious, meaningful, and beautiful. The acting is so amazing Wil , Cory, River, jerry, all of them have made a movie that will never be forgotten. I just wish River was here to see how truly treasured this film is, but I’m sure he’s looking down and smiling.
Kiefer Sutherland was great in it as well.
I’m so happy that they released this interview. How awesome especially not only for 35 years of this movie but Rivers birthday is the 23 of this month so he would have been 51. Great memories! R.I.P. River you are truly missed after all these years! 😢❤️

So sweet how River kept putting his arm around Corey and Wil. I sense that he felt like he was the big brother of the cast.
Technically, he was because he was the oldest of the boys. It also comes with the territory of being the oldest child in his actual family.

This movie was my childhood! I tell anyone who asks that the movie is exactly how it was back then! As I watched I was suddenly with my neighborhood friends playing in the park…having a blast! The music playing in the background was perfect! I heard the song Lollipop and I had a flashback of that song playing on the radio as I was on my way to school! I actually remembered the day it played, and who I was with….see what music does! I will remember where I was, and who I was with when I hear certain songs! My favorite movie of all time….and yes I am a babbling old lady of 76 now, but had to share! 🤗
River was definitely like an older brother to them all in the movie and took care of them all in my opinion and just in general, wish he was still here 😢
River was an old soul. He had such a crazy bright future out of anyone who died in Hollywood.

Stephen King has been blessed with a talent for writing good childhood friendship stories. This movie of course, and “It”. It’s also nice to see that the kids in this movie genuinely cared about each other, and that is especially the case with Wil Wheaton and River Phoenix. It’s heartwarming and at the same time, kind of sad to hear Wil talk about how he genuinely ( brotherly ) loved River Phoenix. He didn’t say it in this video, but I heard it in another one.
This movie makes me feel some kind of way each time I watch it. And I’m sure so many others will feel it. It’s such a nostalgic feeling that we can’t explain.

Growing up with a troubled past, River, as he got older, displayed a heart of gold. His acting abilities were unsurpassed as a child actor. His acting abilities would have gone a long way. How ironic it was when his character faded away at the end of Stand by Me. It is a timeless classic movie that most of us can relate to growing up as kids. They were best buddies to the end. This movie will never be forgotten, nor will River Phoenix. R.I.P. my friend.

Same here accept I was an 80's kid. Cell phones and Social media have changed these type of memories.
When I was in Catholic school in the 80s, there was an Irish kid in my class called Jimmy, and when we had gym class, all the kids would cheer "Vern, Vern, Vern, Vern!" ...Great times.
