    I bought TheA500mini. It emulates well enough and has a cool controller.
    I have real Amigas too but rarely power them on because of monitor issues.

    The days of affordable classic Amiga's are indeed almost gone. One really need to know were to look for a good deal these days. After all. It is 30 years since the 1200 were released. I went for a semi refurbished route, in regards to my machines. I bought them cheap within the last 5 years or so. Fixed them up and slowly upgraded whenever I had the money. The process of owning a good upgraded 1200 these days, can take up to one year, if you dont want to spend a lot in one go. And indeed a good recapping cost money, not cheap, if you want a good job. Like I bought my 1200 as a rust pile, for a low cost, and the first I did was to get it recapped. Then slowly I bought stuff like new membrane. But I fully understand people want something here and now. Just be patient and learn a couple of new skill's here and there.

    Very thorough video. For someone not sentimentally attached to Amiga, getting an old Amiga for big bucks and then spending even more for repairs doesn't seem cost effective. The newer emulation options seem the way to go.

    I have one Brazilian Multicore 2+, and it's a quite good device. About price, it costs about US$280 for the basic unit, bit if we were to import an equivalent one from abroad it would cost about the same (we have steep import taxes), so it's a relief we can buy it here in Brazil.

      Amiga enthusiasts' obsession with price is puzzling to me. These platforms are every bit as interesting and historically relevant as NeXT, SGI, or LISP Machine hardware. If you want the market to continue to support your platform then you should be willing to pay for the software and devices that sellers produce/refurb/etc.

      @@hessex1899 That's a really pedantic way of tackling the concept of the immense cost of these machines. They are... very expensive. Why is that a difficult fence to jump over?

      I've tried SBC and emulation yet it still doesn't give me the same feeling as using my Amiga 1200 and 500 does (oh sorry I said it aloud that I have 2 Amiga's I can already feel the envy 😁 ) but using them and hearing the floppy disc's 💾 working is what's lacking with these newer ones, oh yes I own external floppies and some expansion cards for graphics ext. not to mention the loads of floppy discs with programs and games and CD's, but now I must sadly say I don't own the CD drive, wish I can get hold of a CD drive that works, willing to swop floppy 💾 with programs I never use for a CD drive.

I got lucky with a eBay purchase a good few years ago and got an Aiwia acd-300 with a stunning led front display, my cousin had one and ever since, I always wanted one for mine 100% real hardware over emulation

    Brilliant and extremely enjoyable video to watch. As a past Amiga 1200 owner that went and foolishly sold it all for a silly price, i'm using software emulation for my love of the Amiga games and Demo's. First i have WinUAE on my Windows 10 pc but i did use FS-UAE in the past until their latest release doesn't have a "Windows Installer". So i've gone back to using WinUAE again, which i really do love it. Second i'm running Amibian on R/Pi 3b+ which is soon going into a real Amiga 1200 casing which i'm soon to be purchasing from Retro Passion. I have all the other components ready for this ( slim USB 2 hub,cables and a very sought after "Keyrah v2" board. Once my A1200 casing is ordered and arrives i'll be putting it all together. Can not wait.

    Great summary of the huge number of options out there. I was wondering about the board that allows you to plug a Raspberry into the 68k socket. I get the impression that it effectively turns your Amiga into a software emulation but not quite that simple

    • @EdgeOfPanic
      @EdgeOfPanic 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's the PiStorm and it's not that simple indeed, with Emu68 (that's a baremetal 68K CPU emulator) the Amiga thinks it's talking to a 68040 CPU and that's where the emulation also stops only the CPU is emulated nothing else.
      The clever bit is that the rest of of the Raspberry Pi hardware is exposed to the Amiga and the OS, and trough drivers can natively use all the hardware on the pi if provided with a proper Amiga driver.
      Currently the Amiga can:
      -Use the RAM on the Pi up to 2GB as Fast RAM (the max RAM AmigaOS can address)
      -Use the micro SD card slot as a harddrive
      -Use the Pi GFX chipset as a RTG card to have a nice workbench in modern resolutions and 32bit color depth in 1080P for example.
      -Other drivers such as ethernet/wifi, 2D gfx acceleration are planned/worked on.
      Because there's no host OS on the pi (it just loads the very small Emu68 binary) initialization time at power on is very short like 1 or 2 seconds before the Amiga starts booting.
      The result is that you get a crazy/stupid fast classic Amiga at an affordable price.
      Currently I'm running a PiStorm32 with a Pi4 @2.2Ghz in my A1200, if you ever wondered how fast a 1Ghz+ 68060 Amiga would be then here's your chance.
      And where only scratching the surface now, there's a lot of potential still left unused within the pi, if provided with proper drivers the Amiga could also utilize the GPU trough Warp3D, the hardware video encoder/decoder, USB etc.
      Long story short it's actually the Amiga that takes control of Raspberry pi 😄

    Great mentions of FPGA device choices. SiDi is based off MiST, mostly its a cheaper version of the same design but using a newer (but very slightly smaller) FPGA chip. Sorry to comment on this video after 8 months, but, the Amiga itch had to be scratched. I too have decided to wander into the Amiga world after having zero experience with it over my lifetime. I have experience with everything else on just about every platform and I am old enough that when Amigas hit the market, I would have been a late 20 something year old. I love your video and the pathway overview. I did not do enough research before jumping right into it, starting with a very overpriced A1200 on eBay a month or so ago. Since then I have been drinking from the AmigaOS/Workbench fire hose and "upgrading" my already upgraded 1200. Now that I am where I am, I have to disagree with the idea that "new to Amiga" users should not delve into the last path, that of the SAM and A-EON. For me, I prefer the polished look and functionality it offers, but with the legacy OS. That seems really where I will wind up. So why not go there first and save some money. If things do pick back up with that whole scene, I will be the first in line. X5000's are no where to be found. I kinda like the Vampire, but it seems to have some compatibility issues. There is a fully built X5000 system (of course out of stock on Alenia Computer's website) for 2399 euros. I would purchase something like that in a heartbeat. I hope things will work themselves out with who owns what and becomes a solid unified something.

    The Amiga was a great system, but I don't have much hope for a next-gen Amiga. After Commodore's bankruptcy Amiga felt in many little pieces and different people and companies wanted to do something with all these pieces (or just make money with it). Now I see at least 5 big problems:
    1. After Commodore there was no company that made Amiga's. There were attemts, but the Amiga pieces are in the hands of many different companies. Not one. This makes that the Amiga goes in all directions. There's no clear line or future plan.
    The Amiga is a computer system without a company.
    2. Most people don't know the Amiga system and there's no advertisement because there are no new Amiga products. Yes there is the X-5000 but let's be honest, that's a niche product of a company most people never heard of.
    Other products are toys to play games. Not productivity computers.
    3. The Amiga has nothing to offer what other computers can't do.
    4. We live in a post PC era. People use tablets and smartphones for most tasks.
    5. The Amiga OS is old. Can you imagine people would use Mac OS 7 or Windows 3 today ?
    And now is the Amiga a zombie computer-system. It won't die.

  • @another3997
    @another3997 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Personally, I think you have to be a complete lunatic (sorry, I mean "extremely dedicated and wealthy enthusiast") to buy a so called "Next Gen" Amiga these days. 😉 For an Amiga inspired OS, AROS x86 is free and runs on cheap hardware. Every "next gen" OS uses emulation to run classic Amiga software anyway, so you might as well do that on something far cheaper and more powerful than an old, expensive PPC chip fitted in an expensive but limited motherboard. Hyperion could do far worse than port OS4 to ARM. Their sales would increase by an order of magnitude. Yep, they'd sell 10 copies per year rather than 1. 😁

      Yes you can! Check out Morphos operating system. It works on the Mac minis and old ppc macs. Install it for free and install the chrysalis pack and you will have a good Amiga environment. You do emulation via fs-uae. I will actually be doing a guide on it soon.

    • @brostenen
      @brostenen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you are thinking AmigaOS 4, then no. You can use MorphOS that is an Amiga inspired OS. An PPC Mac however, is not a real Amiga in that sence. And you really need to look for the right Mac model for MorphOS. I have a Mac Mini G4 1.42 ghz machine and that is fully compatible with MorphOS. And no matter what new gen Amiga you choose to own, you still need an emulator to run the old Amiga games. You are basically left with emulation, fpga or classic hardware as the only choices, if you want to run games from the late 80's and early 90's.

      @@tsuikagura No probs. For classic gaming, and those with money. Then I always recommend the following setup.
      - Amiga 1200 fully recapped.
      - Tsunami1230 or TF1230 accelerator.
      - IndivisionAGA-MK3 scandoubler.
      - Kickstart 3.1
      - Angled and buffered CF-IDE adaptor.
      - 16 or 32 gb CF Card.
      - One of the ready made HD Image with WHD Loader.
      Just make sure that the 1200 motherboard are fully compatible with the accelerator. As some boards need a timing fix for certain accelerators to be stable. My revision 1D1 runs stable without the fix. However some early revisions need the timer bug fix. Other accelerators from the 90's have buffers enough to get around that bug.
      For people that dont care for the physical look of the hardware and are only interrested in the games them self and nothing else, then just go for a Mister or minimig.
      Those that are not that picky about full authentic look and feel in games, then go for some kind of emulation on something like PI400 or something. A500-Mini if you want the most easy way.
      For those that are interrested in NewGen Amiga, then start with MacMini G4 1.42 if you can find one for cheap. Else go with the real Amiga NG boards, because the Mac Mini would be too expensive for what you get. Also. Real AmigaNG's can run both AmigaOS4 and MorphOS. Plus Linux of course. You get way more for the money, though they are still more expensive than fully expanded 1200 in tower case and with PCI slots and all that.

    • @JudgeDrokk
      @JudgeDrokk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Djformula Of course - someone should tell the site! They dropped the project before it even got out of BETA, and just after an update brought a flakey attempt at 1200 support. The version with a drive could not load disks and was just there to rip "unprotected" disks to ADF. The OS was nice and games ran OK mostly, bt demo's ran like treacle.. and then crashed, mostly . Despite dropping the physical hardware the makers did promise to keep the software alive with future updates but this didn't happen. At least nothing has arrived in the last 4 years.

    Original computers are getting to be for the wealthy. The prices people ask for them are high now. It's not for Joe average now, certainly not to have a large collection. I'm so glad I bought my retro computers many years ago. I don't have anything Amiga more Advanced than a A600 and several A500. First thing I did with each of the A500s was remove the battery's as they all had the ram expansion fitted. These computers climb in value every year.
