I went through college with a 128gb surface pro 2. I scanned documents into OneNote and took written notes for all my math classes with the stylus. The battery keyboard was great and the optional docking station made it so I could use it as a desktop. Hands down one of my favorite computers that I ever owned. Wish I still had it.

Same-ish here! Got my SP2 refurbished, Junior year of High School, and used it all the way till Junior year of college (last year)! So a solid 4 years of taking notes on it and using it as my main machine. Then I did a 180 and got a Mac. I love it, but miss that stylus.

I haven’t owned any of the new surfaces but got this SP2 back in 2013. From what I’ve tried in stores, the Wacom pen slays all these new ones. I took notes for school with this, played games on my down time (Civ5), ran CAD programs. I still have this guy and everytime I look at a new surface or even iPad, I just can’t see spending the money when I have this little power house. I don’t mind the weight either, it seems more durable to me. The dock is awesome too, found one on eBay back in 2020

I have used last 5 years the refurbished product.
It is simply great. Very powerful device and reliable. Still I get 4.5 hours battery backup on full use. It was great during online classes. Everything gets updated automatically. Now I have windows 10 pro. Very happy with it.

@@LaptopRetrospective Yes only problem is screen size. 10.8inch is bit small for me to use in class. 12inch would have been better. Rest simply flawless. The pen without battery is also very nice. I also use Wacom Intous 680TH wireless and that with Surface is good company. Thanks for your posting even after so many years.

@@SudiptaKumarRoy you could hook up an external display, keyboard and mouse to it if you don't mind getting a video adapter plus a USB hub (or bluetooth peripherals). I agree the screen is pretty tight though, but that does help a bit with portability.

I love this old beast and have had quite a tumultuous adventure with it. I originally got the Pro 2 in 2016 because it could play Skyrim decently at 720p, then I started using it for digital art once I started transitioning from traditional.

Always enjoyed the SP2. After the CPU update, it held the same cpu and gpu of it's successor, the SP3 as far as the i5 model went. (SP3 has an i3, i5, and very notorious thermal throttling i7) Though the main thing to note is how the SP2 was the last to use wacom tech for it's pen. Along with it being much bulkier, (it's a literal brick, especially in comparison to the Surfaces that came after it) it also still retained the dual fans on both ends of the tablet. So whereas the SP3 suffered from throttle issues because of both the slimed down form factor (which admittedly is still when Microsoft nailed the style of the surface line in my opinion) and only having a single fan, the SP2 and older SP1 handles heat dissipation much better. The surfaces after the SP3 became fanless and the SP3 onwards went with a larger screen from there. I own multiple Surfaces but I've always had a soft spot the 10.1 surfaces. I really wanted to like the Surface 3 (the non Pro 10.1 version) due to it fitting my wants of mobility while also being smaller and easier to carry than my SP3 at the times of their release. But the Atom processor just couldn't do what I wanted reasonable. So I had swapped back to my SP2 as my daily drivers while the newer Surfaces became my at home work machines. It held on wonderfully without issues for years until the Surface Go finally came out and met my quota of a 10.1 Surface, meeting what I wanted that the Surface 3 just couldn't do. I still go back to my SP2 occasionally and use it as my daily driver when I need something more powerful CPU wise and less so gpu needed that the Surface Go has over the SP2. Never had an issue or problem with the tablet itself, though my SP2's power cover holds a drastically smaller charge and sometimes causes the mouse to go completely erratic on the trackpad, forcing me to navigate through touch. Probably my favorite of the Surface line overall if I had to choose one.

    • @LaptopRetrospective
      @LaptopRetrospective  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks for the awesome comment and taking the time to write it. I agree that the 3 wasn't an entirely forward leap and they had to fix a lot with the new form factor. These old ones were/are really tough customers.

I still have my surface pro 2. I loved it for school, drawing, and using in FL studio. Definitely had wear and tear but looked nice with the stickers I had on it. It felt like a dream laptop for a an artist . Haven’t used it since 2016. Batteries fried. Might just get it repaired after watching this. I rmrbr when I met panos Panay at a pop up event in Chicago for the Surface Pro 2. Sent me a free signed touch cover when I could barely afford the pro 2. I recently fished my Surface Pro 2 out of my junk pile in my garage and have been using it casually for programming challenges. It's a bit bulky, but I still feel like it's reasonably portable. I feel the screen's a bit cramped, but honestly, I absolutely seem to be able to get by. Visual Studio Code runs smoothly for both Python and Java development (I've not tried building anything large). My only complaint is the trackpad buttons suck. But, I've noticed the trackpad supports gestures that I'm used to from my Mac machines, so that makes it quite usable. I bought my Pro 2 used many years ago for like $300CAD, it's got 8GB memory and 256GB storage and honestly, this is a perfectly usable computer in 2022. I think having 8GB of memory is probably critical for modern basic use and the storage seems fast enough to have helped this thing stay usable. I guess the lack of formal Windows 11 support might be a bit killer, but apparently Windows 11 actually can run fine on these, you just have to go through some extra effort to get it installed.
I use my Pro 2 casually in situations where I wouldn't want to have one of my nice Macs at risk. I toss it in the car and muck around in VS Code while I wait for things, etc.
I consider maybe replacing it with a Surface Go or a newer Pro with a larger screen, but ultimately I'm not sure it's worth spending much to get something newer when strictly speaking this old thing is perfectly fine for basic coding, word processing, spreadsheets, web browsing and even gaming super old games (I actually boot a Windows 2000 VM on it just to play Star Wars Rebellion).
I'm a Mac and Linux guy, but this is a fun little Windows rig that actually has quality hardware and great tight integration with the OS, unlike the experience you get with basically any PC hardware vendor that isn't Microsoft. It has aged extremely well though it's hard to say if it'll be all too good much longer. And to be fair, my expectations of this were super low and it over-delivered on that. If you expect a lot from it, you could be disappointed. I for one, am happy and really like it.

I have the original SP2 I bought new with a purple keyboard a long time ago. I used it when I travel, runs my AutoCAD program perfect. Wish it had 2) USB ports...

I should also add... I dumped that crappy windows 8 and 8.1 now at 10 with no problems.

I can’t determine which Surface device I have! It says 32 GB but I can’t tell more as I can’t power it up. I know that power cord works as it lights up. I have had it plugged in for days but it won’t turn on. Is it possible that the battery is dead? And if so, is it even worth it to have that replaced?

There should be a serial number on it somewhere you can look up. If your device isn't turning on there are a lot of things that could be the problem but the battery isn't likely one if the device is plugged in.

You have a Surface RT or Surface 2 RT, not a pro, basically unusable today, nothing works on it today since it doesn't run regular windows

Would rather own the Surface Pro 2 because of the better battery life
