I love the Surface Pro 3, but a few minor corrections for you on the older Pro 2: - The Pro 2 does have a Micro SD card slot. It's not under the stand, it's on the side of the device a few inches above the power connector. - The Pro 2 has Bluetooth 4.0 - The Pro 2 was available up to 512GB storage as well.
+Pete Brown Yes, you are right. These are some of the core components that the the reviewer should know before making a comparison. A simple search on google will show all these specs for the SP2. Good review, but a lot of missing information.
Wonderful to find videos like this. When you really need to know the difference between two products of the same kind, these types of videos are absolutely perfect. Bravo for the production of such a informative video my friend!
I love the fact that your SP2 keyboard shows signs of wear, it gives you so much credibility as a reviewer. I hate guys that come on, talk and it is obvious they have never used the product. I wish I had more thumbs! Great job.
Enjoyed the video, it was definitely quite informative. Couple corrections, though: SP2 has Wacom digitizer, SP3 has N-Trig... either obliterates a normal capacitive stylus, but Wacom is still better. SP2 does have Bluetooth 4.0/LE, and MicroSDXC expansion. AFAIK SP2 is indeed discontinued from Microsoft Stores, but you can still find them new at plenty of other retailers - Amazon has a certified refurb SP2 selling for $530 (which is a pretty damn stellar price if you are looking for a ~10in tablet!)
GamesTSF shame the wacom pen is better since Microsoft won't be going back to it, apparently they bought nTrig so we won't be seeing anymore wacom blah.
Snotnarok Really is. I mean, N-Trig isn't bad, their pens generally work just fine and are still miles better than fingers or a capacitive stylus. But Wacom still holds the throne.
GamesTSF I honestly haven't tried much nTrig, the pen at the store was a bit banged up and testing it in fresh paint isn't exactly eye opening. I did replace my SP2 pen with the Bamboo feel which works far better despite the specs being, from what I can tell, the same. May just be the pen tip is nicer.
+Snotnarok I've also heard that Wacom didn't want to support the Surface anymore because people started buying the Surface Pro 2 instead of a Cintiq due to its better price point and better all around function
+LAN Fan No idea, I know MS bought nTrig likely to make it overall cheaper to implement their tech. Wacom is such a pain in the ass and excessively expensive I just can't get behind their stuff anymore. I dumped my Cintiq as nice it was, the freedom is worth the slightly smaller sized SP2 vs Cintiq 12wx. Far less bulky overall though
Watching this on my surface pro 2 - Lucky enough to get it during the price slash after they announced the pro 3. The pro 2 is perfect, runs without a hitch and is amazing. To me the surface pro 3 doesn't offer enough of an improvement to justify getting it over the pro 2, the only one I could think of is the larger screen however for me, the 10.6 inch screen is perfect! By the way - great reviews! Thank you!
Couple of mistakes that kept bugging me: [1] the pro 2 does have a micro SD slot (which was identified in the video as a speaker), and [2] the pro 2 is most definitely still available for purchase on the MS website; it's just no longer featured but can be found at www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Surface-Pro-2/productID.286866600.
you didnt go in dept with the digitizer pens that much... from a artist stand point i would go with the surface pro 2 from what i heard its using the wacom digitizer technology which is better than what the surface pro 3 is using ?
hi can you please compare the pen accuracy and feel of the SP2 vs the SP3 as I really want to see the impact of dropping levels of sensitivity by changing from Wacom to N_Trig technology when writing in OneNote. If the writing still feels as good/better on the surface pro 3 in onenote it would be a big relief as that's the one thing concerning me about this new model as a student who does a lot of writing/drawing with the pen.
I had the choice of buying either one and still bought the pro 2 i kinda like the smaller screen more portable. Although I7 sounds tempting i might get that one too.
actually may i poin out that the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 DOES have a Micro SD expansion slot? you kinda missed it. it's on the right hand side of the tablet when you pull the type Cover down.
1. What do you think of the prices? 2. Are Microsoft going to work harder to bring key apps that Android and Apple users enjoy in order to make it worth our while more in tablet mode? 3. In your opinion which is the minimum setup you would go for if all you want is Photoshop work, but not too heavy (amateur), Internet and Media consumption? Thanks.
1. For me, I think the price is a big overprice especially the i3 models then again it is for business use not consumer. 2. Microsoft doesn't really make apps I believe. It is up to the third party or indie developers to make it, but I believe there is an app that has Android emulators. 3. i5/4GB/128GB SSD might work, but I would say go for i5/8GB/256GB SSD since it is more of a "future-proof" for Windows tablet. I don't believe you can manually upgrade the RAM except the SSD.
***** What JohnnyZenith meant is will Microsoft (Metro) Store will have a lot of cool apps that Android and iOS users enjoy. Sure, you can use a desktop program/browser but some of it aren't existed on desktop programs/browser and Microsoft (Metro) Store.
***** Not at all. The Modern side works complimentary with the Desktop side and would have not exist at all had if a pursuit of RT's design areas had not been done. Code base wise, it is a straddle to now include options for ARM pursuing for a long term goal of hardware reach, down to combining codebase workings even down to embedded systems and very light and tight mobile requirements. - which would have not been done if RT work hasn't been done initially. I believe that is a reason why years earlier that Microsoft also pushed the .NET framework and platform for development. You can NOW see other companies (Apple and Google) catching up with their announcements this year. And, if one is switching from a pure RT system, all of those apps would work fine in a typical x64/x86 system with Windows 8/8.1.
Pro 2 has Wacom digitizer which is much better than the N-Trig pen in Pro 3. N-Trig has come a long way since their first digitizer, but the delay is still a killer. That being said, the N-Trig pen that comes with Pro 3 is exceptionally better than all other N-Trig pens, I tried the one for Sony Vaio, htc, but SP3 version of the pen has the best tip-they are all compatible. I may get one of these for myself since their price point dropped to 500$ range.
+John Kang I just got a pro 2 for $375 to use as a Cintiq replacement for Photoshop and ZBrush. Its an incredible deal, and I have a feeling these will shoot up in price once artists realize that these have a full Wacom digitizer in them
NinLover64 _ It's very fast for the most part. If you're wanting to game on it, it isn't great, but it's fantastic for photoshop, 3d modeling and general use.
I'm looking at getting a surface tablet but in really confused on which one to get! The two shown on this video both seem really good. Only problem is that pro2 is discontinued? Are the surface tablets better than the new Bush windows 8 my tablet?! Any help much appreciated as I am really u sure. I have an iPad 2 and a laptop running on windows 7 too so thought It would be good to get a tablet like laptop running on windows 8 because it looks like a great software.
I was waiting for something that never happened. I want to see how the cover 2 looks when you close it on the Surface Pro 3 (obviously it wont cover the screen) and I want to see how the cover 3 looks when you close it on the surface pro 2.
all surface pros have micro sd expansion, I think the guy just forgot. And he also said at about 38 seconds in, that pro 2 is much thinner than the pro 3 lol.
It seems to me that there is not a huge difference in performance between the Pro 2 & Pro 3. Aside from the obvious (size, keyboard, pen, kickstand) the units are very similar still. The performance difference between the i5 vs i7 clock speed is about .3 tenths of a second if you have the latest Pro 2.5 i5 cpu. And .4 tenths if you have the original Pro 2 i5. The additional cache on the i7 is nice but still not enough to make a noticeably big difference for the average user. And YES the pro 2 DOES have bluetooth as well. Though the Pro 3 is a slight upgrade it's NOT worth giving up a Pro 2 for at these price points even though the Pro 3 is worth buying. But only if you don't already have a Pro 2. And I agree that Surface should come as a complete package' for $2k or even $1.5k. But what are the chances of that these days. (Lol, It seems that this guy may have 'borrowed' the Pro 2 since he doesn't seem to know it very well. But not a bad job reviewing overall).
I still like the pro 2 a lot more the black, the way the pen goes in the tablet and other reasons maybe the pro 3 is faster and more smooth but the only thing I saw that caught my eye was that the pro 3 was 45% louder and that I heard gaming was slightly better but appeal is a major issue along with the windows button on the iPad look is too ugly. I would've been sold only if the pen went in the surface pro 3 instead of the keyboard. I honestly feel the pro 3 looks to feminine and pro 2 is more compact which I like. So hopefully when this comes out the pro 2 price will drop big time.
Can you use the Surface Pro 2's digitizer with the Surface Pro 3? I'm just curious because I hear a lot of artists complaining how there isn't 1000+ levels of pressure sensitivity anymore (now there's only like 250+). I really don't see how they could used that many levels of sensitivity; 250+ is a lot if you ask me. Just wondering if you can and if it would even make a difference (as in would you get those pressure levels back?). Such a great device. I cannot stress that enough. I am so amazed at the innovation that went into this. I want one so bad it's not even funny!
So, Actually what is the best between those 2 differents features ? Obviously, the SP3 looks better, but the SP 2 is cheaper, so I don't know which one I'll take, I'm affraid to buy the SP2 and then couple month after, regret this choice... And is there a micro SD on SP2 64GB ? Thanks ! :)
Surface Pro 2 DOES HAVE the microSD expansion port...! It's what he refers to as the "side speaker": there no such a thing as a "side speaker" on the Pro 2
please compare SP3 and SP2 art/illustration abilities (good to compare both pens in depth too) and in different software (like photoshop and manga studio) !
Cheers for the video! You've convinced me to buy a Surface Pro 2 instead of Surface Pro 3 :P There is quite a few reasons why I don't want to buy the newer version. Quite disappointed in it.
I'd like to know more about the pen and sketching. In the presentation they said the pen only had 256 levels of pressure sensitivity. I think Surface 2 had like 65xxx levels. I think the Surface is an amazing product, I hope MS succeed with version 3.
why did they decide to move the windows button to the side? surely it'll mostly be used in landscape. do you have troubles of accidentally pressing it when holding up the device?
Quick question Booredatwork.com . If I am only to use the surface pro for Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator will the pro 2 suffice? Or would you recommend spending the extra on the quite costly pro 3?
There are two Core i7 SKUs, with the 4650U. That has the HD 5000. I think you can count on a 10-20% improvement in graphics performance over the HD 4400.
Looking at getting a Pro 2 or 3 128gb config. just wondering if its worth the extra money for a slightly larger screen, bluetooth connectivity and better camera. not to mention the obvious kickstand and better battery life. plus is the pen that much of a come down from the pro 2? I study architecture, so theres a possibility of running Revit on either machine? But thats not what im intended to use it for originally,
I was on the microsoft store just a few minutes before I looked at this video. I could not decide which product I wanted however BOTH are available still at least that is here in the us they even have a special or two for students on both the surface pro 2 and 3.
Hi my friend, do you use creative softwares at all? A lot of people use third party stylus pens when creating art for the Surface pro 2, would love to see the new pen compared to a pro 2 with a good stylus like the bamboo stylus feel in creative softwares.
Check out the Penny Arcade article, he really liked the pen but had issues with the position of the windows button as his hand tends to accidentally press it.
Yea I'm waiting for he re-review, I hope it goes well, the pen isn't super important for me as I spend most of my time in Illustrator but when I need to 'paint' in PS it is extremely nice. Also the occasional dip into Sketchbook for fun is really nice.
How does the type cover connect to the Surface Pro 3? Does it connect through bluetooth or does it immediately work after it's magnetized to the Pro 3?
Ok review but with some errors. All Surface products have microSD expansion. I never found the charging port on the original surface to be a problem. Micro usb chargers are WAY worse. I think all chargers should be reversible magnetic.
I am looking to use a Surface Pro in my photography workflow and was saving for a 2 but now that the 3 has been announced with that new aspect ratio I am at a stand still, can anybody advise on which to purchase & why?
You state in the video that the pen does not magnetically stick to the side...it does. Maybe not in the same spot, but I tried it myself in the Microsoft store and it works.
One irk I have about the Surface has always been the charger. Rather than being that manner, it should have been T shaped like the MagSafe 2 on Macbooks. If I'm using it and charging it, I don't want my cord to be bending in such an ugly manner and eventually degrading the cord. Rather if it was T shaped, it wouldn't bend like that. That's a little OCD of me...
do you experience no slow down with PS or lightroom? i have an ultrabook samsung i5-3317 1.7ghz series 9 8gb and these two really slows down with chrome on bc i have multiple internet windows open. how are the programs doing with chrome on?? i was told many with these applications i need a big laptop with dedicated graphics
Dear: the track pad on macbook is clickable, which means the track pad can be pressed a little down with a click sound. How about pro 3 ? Is its track pad clickable? Thanks!
In favor of Pro 2: Wacom digitizer. In favor of Pro 3: design, battery life, screen res & aspect ratio, kickstand, pen quality. Same: overall power in processing/graphics (on i5 anyway).
The "speaker" on the side of the surface pro 2 is actually the micro sd slot :-| But I liked the part where you looked for the other "speaker" and found none :-D
jsut measured my pieces of A4 paper which is about the ratio and size of the surface pro 3, which they really take us not into the 2k ultrabook/tablet world but also extended it further by providing an amazing screen with the size of a paper but as well a nice screen. Would buy the 128gbssd coz it's great. Not sure if i should spend on surface pro 2 right now as the ntrig on SP3 is not as appealing as the wacom digitizer on surface pro 2.....
I just received a surface pro 2 for business. I wanted to should I take it back or its specs good as Surface pro 3? is it a good device to have and experiment with?
I love the Surface Pro 3, but a few minor corrections for you on the older Pro 2:
- The Pro 2 does have a Micro SD card slot. It's not under the stand, it's on the side of the device a few inches above the power connector.

I love the fact that your SP2 keyboard shows signs of wear, it gives you so much credibility as a reviewer. I hate guys that come on, talk and it is obvious they have never used the product. I wish I had more thumbs! Great job.
The Pro 2 does have MicroSD card expansion... It's on the right side, in the hole that you said was a "speaker".
Loved the video. clear and detailed explanation with pro 2, 3 comparison side by side. Hardware is the most part that evolves.
I'm really looking forward to some gameplay video's from you guys. Hope you will do them soon.
Enjoyed the video, it was definitely quite informative.

The thing you pointed at as the "Speaker" is really the micros SD port.
One correction the slim slot on the side is not a speaker its the sd card slot, so the SP2 does have one

Hi... Is it a good choice buying a Surface Pro 2 nowadays under 300$ over any other tablet?
Damn where???
refurbished...
+Cristhian Bolivar Refurbs always risky. But I did just find one today by coincidence and am giving it a try can always return it if it's not working.

I had the choice of buying either one and still bought the pro 2 i kinda like the smaller screen more portable. Although I7 sounds tempting i might get that one too.

Checked it earlier today thanks man.
Yea I'm waiting for he re-review, I hope it goes well, the pen isn't super important for me as I spend most of my time in Illustrator but when I need to 'paint' in PS it is extremely nice. Also the occasional dip into Sketchbook for fun is really nice.
.
0:37 Nope The Pro 3 is MUCH Thinner than the Pro 2 its a very simple process actually.
do you think the glass will crack if it fell from a table height?
I am looking to use a Surface Pro in my photography workflow and was saving for a 2 but now that the 3 has been announced with that new aspect ratio I am at a stand still, can anybody advise on which to purchase & why?
Surface pro 3 because it has a bigger screen, its faster, high res for better viewing on photos, a better pen, kickstand, keyboard, lighter
why is surface pro 3 screen's pixel density so low? only 216 PPI?
we want you to talk about the battery life in both devices ?
especially surface pro 2 with power cover .....?!
You state in the video that the pen does not magnetically stick to the side...it does. Maybe not in the same spot, but I tried it myself in the Microsoft store and it works.
Bro, the Surface 2 does have micro SD card slot. Its on the side where you mistakes it as a speaker
There is a sd card slot on the pro 2, so the info you gave on that is wrong.
Van we use a SP2 keybord on the SP3 ? ( sorry for my english, i'm french )
Love your videos man, just letting you know SP2 DOES have micro SD expansion :)
I was wondering if the keyboard slot works for the surface rt like could I use a surface pro 3 keyboard for my surface rt or not ?
This might be a dumb question but can both pro 2&3 play games and which one is easiest to do so and I mean like halo
do you experience no slow down with PS or lightroom?
i have an ultrabook samsung i5-3317 1.7ghz series 9 8gb and these two really slows down with chrome on bc i have multiple internet windows open.
how are the programs doing with chrome on?? i was told many with these applications i need a big laptop with dedicated graphics
Dear:
the track pad on macbook is clickable, which means the track pad can be pressed a little down with a click sound.
How about pro 3 ? Is its track pad clickable?
Thanks!
Yes.
And that, my man, gave you a subscription.
But which would be faster? The i3 processor on the pro 3. Or the i5 on the pro 2?
Would the surface pro 3 (with the keyboard) be too big to use in a lecture hall?
Kongreat Are you joking?
In favor of Pro 2: Wacom digitizer.
In favor of Pro 3: design, battery life, screen res & aspect ratio, kickstand, pen quality.
Same: overall power in processing/graphics (on i5 anyway).
The "speaker" on the side of the surface pro 2 is actually the micro sd slot :-|
But I liked the part where you looked for the other "speaker" and found none :-D
Can you play game like league of legend at high settings ????
Not high settings but the first gen pro 1 runs it fine.
cool thats power full what abot super low setting ??
cool cool
*****
watching this on pro 2 as well!! lol
have you done battery drain tests?
does it come with all features of office? or does it come with office?
How about battery time? I remember SP 1 is about 4H, SP 2 is 7H. And pen still use WACOM technique? Thanks :D
the digitiser technology is by n-trig now, allows for a thinner screen, better accuracy, but less pressure sensitivity levels (256 oppose to 1024)
The battery life is about an 7-9h
Could you check if the pen tilt angle is recognized in Photoshop?
no, it is not
Pro 2 is thinner than Pro 3? 0:34
Can you run the app of 3d mark please?
Tanks very mutch. I love this product as the ather one of Microsoft.
Battrey needed for the pen ? It won't connect magically without power
yes it needs a battery
The Pro2 did also have a 512gb version.
will the sp3 pen work with the sp2 just wondering since they have diff technologies in them
No.
May i know whether the Wacom pen on surface pro 2 is usable on the surface pro 3 ?
no, sp3 is ntrig
what is that audio clusterfuck on 7:01?
jsut measured my pieces of A4 paper which is about the ratio and size of the surface pro 3, which they really take us not into the 2k ultrabook/tablet world but also extended it further by providing an amazing screen with the size of a paper but as well a nice screen.
+Jaron Turner get the pro 3.
Both the Surface Pro 2 AND 3 have the Micro SD expansion. But that doesn't really matter. Just letting you guys know.
I need to know how about the pen.
What GPU is in the Surface 3? I really hope they went for the Iris 5100
4400
thanks!
Same I right they would have saying that it out now
hi I have a art software I was thinking a out geting a pro 2 how can I install it ?
I got a Surface RT 2 on my birthday and literally a week later, Microsoft announces the Surface Pro 3. Fuck my life.
surface pro 2 has a microsd card slot
***** Yea, but he's pointing it out because he said the SP2 doesn't have one.
Actually all surface pros have micro sd expansion, and also said at about 38 seconds in, that pro 2 is much thinner than the pro 3 lol.
Hi
Can I get SP3 in 4G LTE version? I mean the one to put my micro sim in it and access internet everywhere ? thanks
You made a mistake u said pro 2 is thinner than the pro 3 ... It's the opposite
Yes the Pro 3 is thinner
Booredatwork.com dont make me get mad again hehe
