    I have to admit that this is not a place I would choose to stay (I guess it makes me feel old and boring) but I loved this review, because the place is so different! When you were filming the hallways, I immediately got “Catch me if you can” vibes, so it was nice to hear the background story about the TWA hotel, even though the movie was about Pan Am, but from the same era. Loved the Chinese restaurant, I think that would make me visit this hotel just to eat at that place, I think it looked beautiful! Thank you for the wonderful video, entertaining, surprising and different!

      Yes it’s certainly not a “flavor” that everyone would like, but I’m curious to try their resort in Hua Hin- I think the colorful vibe might fit a beach resort a bit better. Thanks as always for your support 🙏🏻

      I don't know why most luxury hotel chains in Bangkok think 22KG max dumbbells are acceptable. They need to stop cheap-ing out on a couple thousand (and those dumbbells will basically last forever, unlike those fancy machines they use which cost more).

    Very interesting brand which I never knew existed till this point and definitely a place I would like to stay. That said... I agree with your comment about the halls. One worrisome point however is the sewer smell which usually is a sign that one of the drains is not correctly sealed or with a proper u-joint under each drain. While turning on a ceiling vent might help a bit the gasses are still likely coming into the room. Anyway... I hope they can get that fixed. Also... you peaked my curiosity with respect to an Accor Orient Express brand. Can't wait to see what that might be!

    • @tfft
      @tfft  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe they fixed the sewer problem in my room by replacing or adding a one way drain seal as the exhaust fan wasn’t noticeably different before and after they fixed it. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻

    Great review! I have been wanting to check this hotel out as I have stayed at The Standard in Hua Hin which I really liked. This one seems like a good choice for the trendy Instagram crowd. Pool was a little smaller than I was hoping for but it looks like a good choice if you want that high rise city vibe. Have been to the rooftop bar 3 times and never seen any gnats so maybe it is a September thing with the rain.

    • @tfft
      @tfft  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When I originally stayed here last year I thought it was a decent choice, but their rate hikes have put it firmly into the 'overpriced' column for me. If Park Hyatts and Rosewoods are in the $300s, Kempinskis and Kimpton in the $200s... then The Standard should be firmly in the mid to upper $100s. Thanks for watching 🩴

    I am in Bangkok for 10 days in June, and I am debating to stay in either the standard or the Kimpton. I notice you have stayed in both, is there a preference from you? I love the look of both honestly. Did the pools at either hotel get too busy?

    Great review as always. I stayed there in late 2023 and enjoyed it. No insects 🐞 so it may have been seasonal. Corridors remind me of a Carnival cruise ship (that’s a dig) but the rooms are cool. Bath has side faucets allowing to people to occupy without either getting a faucet behind their head. The diner style seating in the rooms is good for eating and bad for relaxing. A comfy couch would have been an improvement. Food at the grill is excellent.

    I've booked two nights here in October for a solo trip after a work trip to Singapore, but I'm starting to worry it might feel too intimate or romantic, especially since my family will be at home. This will be my first "mini-holiday" before I fly back to the UK. Are you a solo traveler? Did you feel awkward at all? I'm planning to enjoy a swim, a few beers and cocktails, and dinner.
    The Standard Bangkok looks very cool and hip, but I'm wondering if it might be more suited for couples? My concern is that I might feel out of place compared to staying at a bigger hotel where it's less intimate and you can blend in more easily. Would one of the Kimpton Hotels be a better option for a solo traveler like me?

    • @tfft

    The overall interior design is certainly unusual. The hotel room seems smaller than than the 450sf you mentioned. The corner long seat, the design of the coffee and side tables and their bright colours do make the interior feel cheap and not luxurious. Certainly a design that appeals to the trendy and young ones I think.

      After years in the restaurant business I’ve learned it’s the 2, 3 & 4 star customer reviews/comments that are the most helpful to drive your business forward and I believe the same is true here. If I DON’T get any tepid or negative-ish comments, I don’t assume the video was great- I assume it wasn’t engaging enough for the viewer to take time to comment.
      As for the two channels mentioned, 100% I agree Jeb Brooks is a class act. Trek Trendy is engaging but sometimes I need a break from over the top luxury content all day everyday, which on camera often can’t portray the experience fully since so much of what you’re paying for are things you can’t capture, such as service levels, quality of ingredients/linens, etc. - which is precisely why I prefer to focus this channel on a ‘premium’ experience instead of strictly ‘the best of the best of the best…’

    My office is next door, at the Sathorn Square building. I’ve been closely following this hotel development since 2016.
    It went all wrong since the start.
    Part of the land plot was a cemetery. They bulldozed it and built it anyway. No Thai or buddhist person bought it.
    The original developer went broke, so the King Power group took it over and changed the project.
    The original hotel project went down the drain in 2017.
    Its future remained uncertain until 2018, when Accor announced it would build the first Orient Express hotel, a world class 5 star hotel. Building renovation started.
    When it was taking shape, Covid happened.
    You guessed it right, the second hotel project failed before it had opened its doors.
    Now they opened this The Standard Hotel, a shade of what it could have been.
    If you are coming to Bangkok, there are at least 40 hotels that will offer you more for USD 192.00.
    Among them:
    Kimpton Maa-Lai
    Siam Kempinski
    Rosewood
    137 Pillars Suites
    W Bangkok
    The Peninsula
    Conrad
    Sindhorn Kempinski
    Hope these tips are useful.

From your description I feel like it's a full on infestation and they might be breeding in the pipes so all the rooms will have this problem. It's sad to see this happen to such a new property.
