    Balakirev was one of the famous "Mighty Five" or "Mighty Handful." His place in Russian music is large, and he deserves to be remembered. ISLAMEY, which starts this program, is supposed to be one of the hardest pieces in literature.

    I've been a huge classical (and especially solo piano) fan since I was in my early teens but somehow Balakirev escaped me until maybe 6 months ago, and now is possibly my favorite of all!!

    Simply fantastic !!! Mily Alexeyevich Balakirev, is perhaps better known today for bringing together the composers known as The Five than for his own music.

    Alexander Paley proves his genius in this collection of Piano works of the great Russian composer Balakirev. Balakirev was a piano virtuoso and a domineering figure among the Russian-five and even advised mighty Tchaikovsky.
    These piano works published on 6 CD's are a delightful collection and a joy to listen to in total or individually. Clearly, influenced by Chopin, Balakirev registers his distinct style even on works emulating Chopin. The program notes refer to some as "Bad Chopin" but regardless, they have a unique color of their own. In particular, I found Sonatina (Esquisses), Valse di bravura and other Waltzes to be out-of-this-worldly that would take your breath away. I felt I was floating over clouds, oblivious to passage of time and didn't wish them to end!

    From the liner notes by the pianist himself (yet there’s still quite a few nice pieces here!):
    In describing 22 out of 62 tracks, performer Paley's own notes unflinchingly repeat phrases like "mediocre salon piece", "I cannot say this is very successful", "nothing special", "absolutely mediocre", "more like background dinner music", "not very interesting", "nothing of interest", and even, "just junk!" The seven waltzes are described as "the worse (sic) part of his piano music," and, "a real challenge to make them interesting on a CD". He mentions Chopin's mazurkas, as "much shorter and much better than Balakirev's" (seven). I hope this doesn't discourage other customers from buying this set, but I would be less than honest if I did not mention Paley's own realistic and quite accurate assessments.

    This music is hard to play; one has to vary the repetitions effectively. When he's great or even good the composer does it for you.

    The music is gorgeous, the pianist is very talented and skillful, but the instrument he's playing and/or the recording is of poor quality. The sound is lacking depth.

    • @wamexart
      @wamexart 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think I know what you mean. But I wonder how the pianos in their days sound. If you hear the Berlin historical pianos por the NY Met;s I guess that instrument sound was secondary to our today ears. Músicality is what counts, and Balakirev was really a Watershed in the XIX century music.

    • @yassveena
      @yassveena 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that's a pity. I hear Balakirev for the first time and it sounds strange, a bit perverted, with that instrument for me, kind of paradox. What he wants to express can not really appear. The music is wide and the sound is narrow.

    • @abe_48
      @abe_48 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@yassveena The sound you call perverted has not much to do with piano. It is the quirky style of Balakirev's composition, IMO. It sounds to me like that too, sometimes, phrases end abruptly twisted around in odd chords.

    • @abe_48
      @abe_48 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There are many other variables like recording equipment, the studio sound quality and digitization. Ever since the digital age, I have noticed the music sounds have deteriorated. But of course, the piano is a major factor too. In a movie about Rachmaninov, he threw a fit if the piano was not a Steinway and I have read the same complaint made by other pianists.

    • @yassveena
      @yassveena 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@abe_48 Yes the composer has it's own special style with abruptly changing elements, but what i meant really was the sound of the instrument as result from the certain recording situation. So my explanation was not detailed enough. I would like the tones come out more, they sound like in a box, or to become poetical, like the sun behind the clouds. The story with Rachmaninov i like, he for sure had his reasons to sense and act like that.

    • @michaeledwards1172
      @michaeledwards1172 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TommenIBaratheonI wonder whether this could be the result partly of the way Alexander Paley plays. In many places, he uses the pedal quite a bit less than I would have thought best for this style of music, and this dryer style of playing could give this impression about the piano itself.

    The time indications are wrong...from a certain piece in advance they are completely wrong, and each indication corresponds to the previous piece in the list!!!!!!! P.s. probably because you forgot the Waltz n 6 in the list....
