I’m 13 and I really want to be something in the fashion industry when I’m older but I’m really bad at drawing so I want to get better at it but I don’t know where to start to be honest
I agree with what was said.
For 12 years I had worked at a theatrical costume company called Barbara Matera LTD. where we made costumes for Broadway musicals, operas, ballets and celebrities. Theatrical costume designers normally don't have manufacturing factories of there own, so they hire companies like the one I use to work at to have their designs be made. Some designers are incredible artists when it comes to their illustrations. Those were great to work with because we understood what the designers wanted to get done just by looking at their drawings. But then there were some designers that use to make tiny impressionistic yet messy art that use to make our work difficult. There were always mistakes in the mock ups and even arguments would arise because the designer couldn't understand why we didn't do what they drew. But we couldn't understand what they wanted due to the (I hate to be so blunt) bad sketches. Again, I hate to say this, there are a couple of Broadway costume designers that even though they are Tony award winning artist they use to make sketches that looked like it might have been made by a 7 year old. Sorry. Some might be artsy and might look good on a frame hanging on a wall but we had no idea what the fabric was suppose to be doing and how was it suppose to hang. We had a terrible time with that sort of illustrations. Don't draw something stiff looking on a stick figure if you want something that is soft and flowing. Don't draw something that looks flat on the body if you want something more 3 dimensional and with a lot of texture and layers of fabrics on top of each other. Those who manufacture clothing are not physics and take what they see on paper literal. It's our job to do so.
My suggestion to you all is;
Know what you want, know how to describe it and know how to put it to paper exactly how it looks in your head. It will help you in the long run when it comes to getting it done on time and getting it done on budget. If your workers have to work overtime and use up more material than what was budgeted for in order to keep correcting misunderstandings then it could be a major problem for everyone, especially you..

As for your design career advice, I think people need to understand your advice is basically guidelines. There are always exceptions, but you have plenty of experience in fashion. You are so generous to share info for free online

These illustrations came out so beautifully. They look really rich and detailed. That's interesting what you said about fashion illustration being a skill you could use for trend forecasting.
No, they weren't used for forecasting, I did illustrations for the presentations but I was told what to illustrate. The illustrations were not part of the forecasting process.

I'm not into the fashion designing world at all, I initially started watching this from a portfolio critique video of yours, but stayed to watch the progression of the art piece. I love it. And agree with what you said.
I use alcohol markers for fun coloring sometimes and they are a great medium to work with. Easy to blend, even on my not marker paper and beautiful colors in general. I also see why watercolor would be a great medium to do anything with design, be it fashion or interior, it doesn't really matter.
I am pursuing a biomedical engineering degree at the moment and perhaps not very surprisingly, engineers also need very specific drawing skills to sketch their designs and skills with specific programs to turn it into something tangible to work with. Technical drawing can be a bitch, haha.
I was honestly a bit surprised that people thinking of pursuing a (fashion) designing path asking if they need to know how to draw. As you said, it's the primary way to communicate what's in your head. Everything you said about which media to learn made total sense.

I'm literally only getting my GED to pursue a traditional/professional education in fashion (im very sure this is what I wanna do with my life) ,While I get to PARSONS/FIT/RISD or whatever, I use alot of your videos to prepare myself and deeply appreciate what you're doing for the "underground" design community ! ANYWAYS .. I was wondering if you'd do a video , addressing modern street-wear. (like Demna Gsavalia, Virgil Abloh, etc) side of the industry; Designing/Getting into that. what you think about that side in general. tips, opinions etc !

Thank you so much. This really helped me on what I need to improve on to move forward in wanting to be a designer. I do have a question? What should my portfolio look like to apply to college for fashion. Since I don't have an art teacher to help with anything that comes to the field I want to go to school for. I would love any advice.
All schools have different portfolio requirements and they're usually posted on their websites. Follow the directions of each school.

Loved watching you illustrate this!! Was really interesting to see an illustration style which is quite different to my own! Quick question: For the last couple figures, you used a white coloured pencil to create the drape. Did you use white as the highlight, or was it because the gown was too dark for black to show up?
