I have 2 sets of Hunt wheels now. I bought a set in May for my SWorks SL6. 50mm UD Carbon spoke with CeramicSpeed bearings. I was so impressed by the out of the box performance that I bought a 35mm set of the same wheel for my Lynskey R240. But the wheels were only part of it. On my my 35mm I ran into a mistake with customs and a over-zealous customs agent in Georgia labeled them as motorcycle parts and sent me a bill and a number of forms that needed to be filled out before she would release them. Because they were NOT MC parts I couldn't provide the documentation she demanded. This went on in circles for two weeks. Finally, in desperation I contacted Hunt customer service. The results were almost immediate. The man Hunt extended himself and personally contacted the customs agent. At first the agent stuck to her guns and told us that by law, she had to have the non-applicable docs. After a full day of back and forth, we managed to go over her head and a regional supervisor released the wheels, telling us they never should have been held up and had tariffs applied to them. A day and a half later I was riding my Lynskey with new Hunt UD 35mm wheels. The help and time that Hunt CS spent with me was amazing and something rarely seen today. They sold me on this company. I would recommend both their product and their cs in a heartbeat! 😊
Watched the whole video without fast-forwarding and I am not even a gravel rider lol! Like the way you articulated the review. Very logical and smooth.
i have the canyon grail as well and wanting to invest in these wheels. Do you mind sharing your experience with it compared to the stock wheels on the grail? Does it feel noticeably faster? What specs are your wheels?
@@josephpark3914 It was a big upgrade from the dt swiss g1800 stock wheel. Lighter, stiffer, and pick up speed faster. I've used it for more than 1 year now and had rode it in a few long distance gravel races this year. It's tough and reliable as well.
I love the angry bees... Loud Pipes Save Lives! You sold me on these... I signed up for the newletter... This might just be my Christmas Present to myself! WEEEEEEE!!
I bought this set of wheels for my Diverge 2021 Carbon Sport as well. I went with the Panaracer SS+ and have nothing but good to say about them. I set the pressure at 35 - 40lbs and ride gravel and asphalt paths with zero complaints. The ride quality at those pressures is excellent. While the Panaracer SS+ aren't "grippy" on rough surfaces they work for the coarse and fine gravel I ride in my area. I liked them so much I bought another pair for my son's Diverge (he loves the wheels as well). For the money, I don't think you can do better. Very happy with Hunt, their product and support. Thanks for another great video.
Right on! Great feedback. I haven’t tried the SS yet. Have tried slick and SK, and the SKs have stayed on the wheels ever since. You’re right, they’re hard to beat for the money
Very thorough, thank you! If you’re looking for other bits to upgrade, I might mention that lately I’ve upgraded my stock rotors (the same that I see on your bike curently, 105 grade I believe) to XTR. Oh the difference in feel, modulation and power! Night and day. Cheers, keep it up :)
@@TheBikeSauce That would be cool. I recently went from stock sram rotors to hope floating rotors, I thought there would be no change at all, just wanted to drop some weight and also improve the looks, but actually the brakes work better. Though the reason for this I am not sure about. Maybe just because the new discs are clean?
Hey, I was thinking exactly the same, I have a 2021 e5 comp, first gravel bike, pretty new to changing wheels, I have normally just run what ever came with the bike but this time I want to go tubeless and stock wheels do not support. Would you recommend these wheels on an e5 bike? Thinking about these and the pathfinder pros as do pretty much mixed surface all the time
Would be a killer combo for mixed surface I think. Heard great things about the tubeless pathfinder pros (I don't recommend the stock sports). On the other hand, I have also heard of people successfully running the stock G540s tubeless, but sounds like a bit of a crapshoot / hassle.
A couple comments: 1. 264 lbs is 120 kg. Which is a nice round number. 2. Light Bicycles has set up a North American shop in British Columbia where they build and ship wheels. They charge a fee for the duty on rims to get them to Canada but there is no duty and brokerage fees on complete wheels shipped to America. Glad you like your wheels. Would like to hear your thoughts on the Gravelking vs. Gravelking Sk.
Nice, great input! Of course I forgot to consider metric... yes I’ve heard good things about light bicycle; almost ordered as set before I finally decided on the hunts. Will probably do a comparison between slick and sk gravel kings soon. Thanks!
Speaking of aero gravel, Dylan Johnson posted a race report from this fall's Cedar City BWR where he in the lead group averaged ~22 mph for the first 100 miles. Definitely not an average cyclist. He posts some good stuff on training and racing.
LightBicycle wheels are incredible. Just ordered my Falcon Pro WR38s for gravel racing. Like how you can spec from many different hubs and spokes. plus a Carbon wheelset that weighs 1330grams for around $1.3K is pretty much the best option around. Paired with Specialized Pathfinder pro 2bliss 38c's i will be looking to go fast.
@@TheBikeSauce any new thoughts? I'm looking for upgrade wheels for my current 2017 GT Grade Carbon (came 32c Donnelly) build and will go to my next frame for 35c-38c tires if I decide to upgrade the frame to something that can handle more tire width. I'm currently running 35cm G-One Allroad on Stan's grail (20.3 ID) and they are already pretty tight in the rear measuring 36.8mm. I'm thinking I could get the 35 X-wides hooked and easily run 32c gravelking slicks or G-one speed 30c as there are no G-one 32c. I like the idea of wide hookless and don't plan on running non-tubeless, and they are lighter and cheaper. I'm thinking the hookless 25id would be a no go with any 35c in my current frame. Im a mountain biker as primary (ibis Ripley w/ WAO wheels) so this is my allroad bike but I have to drive 30-50min to get to some good gravel (Barry Roubaix, melting man) so I road mostly bad Michigan back roads that are covered in debris lol. I'm leaning towards the X-wide 35 (23id hooked) with 32c GK slicks as my frame has built in suspension compliance and rides good on 32c, will be better in the present frame and still excellent on 38c later.
just took delivery (from the UK for just $28 shipping) of Hunt's Aero (bladed spokes) 35 Carbon i19 x e25 wheelset. also in the box were extra spokes, (no spoke wrench), CLD lock rings, QR skewers (which cost $15/each), and TL valves. i did not know these were Novatec hubs however, they seem smooth, engaged quickly, and spun for like ever...despite the really annoying buzzy sound. paired these rims with Pirelli Cinaurato Hs, only one of which was a little tricky to seat. got them so to lighten up my Cinelli Gazetta Della Strada flat bar randonneur which is a lovely COLUMBUS Cromor Double Butted Steel frame but came equipped with 9-speed drive train and indestructible but heavy wheels.
Hunts are awesome. I ran Aero Superduras on my road bike for 4000 miles and they were true the entire time, mixed surface riding included. I’m thinking about buying these since my gravel bike does dual duty these days, and the current 45mm tires are dogs in the flats in a headwind.
Finally pulled the trigger on this same set after much consideration between the Hunt Carbon 30. Not concerned about aero, just like the wide ID and very happy with another set of Hunt 650b wheels. In the comments below, someone mentioned upgrading the rotors. I have SRAM Rival 160 on an OPEN WI.de. Poor braking compared to my 180 XT on my mountain bike. Lost the rear on a tricky descent in very hot weather. Found glazed pads and discolored rotor in the back. Can you point me to a better, compatible rotor? Thanks for a clear, well presented review of this wheelset!
I bought two sets of Hunt Gravel DiscX wheels. My mechanic just noticed most of the spoke nipples have cracked or disintigrated only on the brake disc side of the front wheel. Have you heard anything about a potential design flaw? Wheels are just over 3 years old and just beyond the warranty period.
Very nice review! I have a 2021 Diverge Comp Carbon. Your Hunt rear sounds just like my Bontrager Aeolus Pro 3V rear wheel with Rapid Drive 108 hub. And yes, I've gotten used to the sound. Weight is also about the same. Mine came out to 1598 grams on my scale. Size is close. Bontragers are 25mm inner and 32mm outer, 37mm deep. The Bontragers are $1300. But I got them at REI and get back a 10% member dividend, so final cost will be 1170. Would be interesting if someone did a Hunt vs Bontrager review and see if there are any detectable differences.
Hmmm - Hambini reamed them, but with the need for a Classified hub shell for the rear wheel, I am quite limited, and a little bit reluctant to pay an additional 600 Euro for another option, so just odered them (before having watched your review). It seems that the hubs need carefull checking - the bearings are suboptimal, and the tolerances for the fit might be not good. Nothing which cannot be fixed after 10,000km and need for a bearing change...
Have had a set of Hunt Carbon All Road on my gravel bike, Santa Cruz Stigmata, for the last 2 1/2 years. Great wheels! Original reason for going Hunt beside the $$$ saved, they were the only 28 spoke carbon wheel. Still light, but tough. Have rode them over all types of terrains, including single track mt bike trails. Running tubeless with Maxxis Ramblers. Liked them so much I bought another set of Carbon Hunt 50's for my road bike. They are fast, noticeably faster. Stiff and stay true.
@@TheBikeSauce I'm trying to decide whether to change my Mavic Aksium discs on my aluminium winter road bike for a pair of Hunt's (with 28mm tyres). I don't do gravel, but winter commutes on wet, rough roads is par for the course in the UK! Have the Hunt 50s on my new summer bike, but not sure if the Hunt 4 Seasons would be any different to the Aksiums. If not, then I grapple with the quandary of whether it is worth the increased cost for carbon wheels on an aluminium winter bike?
Tough call. I’m actually about to do some testing on the 4 seasons; wish I could have answers. If it were me, I probably wouldn’t put nice carbon wheels on an alloy winter bike, but it wouldn’t hurt. Aksiums used to come stock on many bikes (not sure if it’s still the same), and I recall they’re pretty run of the mill. Perhaps a fresh alloys set of 4 seasons would liven up your winter bike without breaking the bank
I have a 2021 Diverge expert ordered, supposed to arrive in February. Definitely going to consider ordering these wheels . The bike comes with aluminum DT Swiss wheels and branded in house specialized hubs I know nothing about the internals. I wish I knew for sure what our axle sizes are ?
@@shinwang6102they are great! Ride lighter and coast longer than the original wheels. I’ve put a lot of miles on them including a 54 mile gravel race. No issues at all.
Great info on these wheels. Wondered if you had thoughts on 700c vs 650b wheelset. I'm thinking of the Hunt wheels, but since I'm making a chance, I'm curious about going 650b
Depends a lot on priorities I think. If you only care about all out speed, can't go wrong with 700c. If you're shorter, or like to experiment with big plush tires, 650b is the way to go. Speed-wise I can't say for sure a 700c setup will be appreciably faster, but there is evidence to suggest it may be a bit faster
Thanks for a great review. This question may have been asked before, but are your bars on the Diverge stock standard? Or have you changed them? I'm just wondering what the specifications are. Thanks again.
Those hunt wheels look great in that bike. While I was listen to you, you put me to think about wheel deep. Planning to build my own wheel since I'm heavy rider and there is not many wheel brands that does 32 spokes+. I already bought the hubs and looking just the rim only from light bicycle. Was thinking 45 deep not cause aero at all but to make it stronger with shorter spokes. Don't know if I'm doing it right or with 35mm will be enough. It gets windy in Florida and even with shallow rims I being move easily also. Sorry for the brainstorm lol.
Deep and wide rims will be horrible handling! Don't do it! Shallow will have compliance (comfort) and handle WAY, way better. Beyond 32c tyres, aero is a total myth. Don't be fooled! Deep rims WILL be harsh and WILL push you around all over the place in an unpredictable manner. Choose the right shallow rim and you'll have plenty of strength.
@@gregconti8036 thanks for the advice greg 👍. I went for 35mm on front 45mm in the back. Like I mention I'm heavy rider so I couldn't jeopardize going thru those gravel rolling holes and crack them, just how I bend 2 aluminum rims. Working on losing muscle mass/weight as well.
I really like your videos/reviews. Are you going to do any videos on clipless spd/gravel shoes? I just picked up a gravel bike and came to your page to find shoe reviews 😩
Ha! Perhaps I'll do a video, but regarding shoes, I go as basic as possible. My shoes are 15 yr old Shimano MTB shoes with Shimano M520 pedals that have been through h311 and are still smooth to this day with 0 servicing.
I bought Fi'zi:k X5 Terra SPD shoes and have been really happy with them. Fairly low price with premium features and very comfortable. Good match for my 2021 Specialized Diverge Sport Carbon.
@@TheBikeSauce I am also looking for a new or slightly used 56cm gravel bike. the Diverge may be a good choice as long as it is within my $3,500 price range
At your budget there are so many great options right now. Enjoy the shopping process and feel free to reach out via my website if you have specific questions
Any thoughts on how these compare with Roval Terra C which are at a similar price point? Great review! Considering wheelset as my next upgrade on stock 2021 Specialized Diverge Sport Carbon but need to get over sticker shock from initial bike purchase, so maybe next year as my timeframe. Researching now for what to save up for.
Great bike! 😉 I don’t have any first hand experience with the rovals unfortunately. I know on paper they look similar, but can’t comment on the ride. Next year is fine - you’ll appreciate the upgrade that much more
Thanks for the review. I have ordered some of these wheels and am now in the tyre choice rabbit hole. I had some 40c Terra Speeds delivered yesterday (the wheels are not due for a month) and am now having second thoughts about the hookless. I can't find anything online that says whether the Terra Speeds are suitable for a hookless rim. I have asked Continental but they have not replied. Other than the Gravel King SKs and the Hunt recommended Schwalbe G-Ones what tyres are people running on these rims? Ideally someone else will have the Terra Speeds (and not had any issues) so I don't have to return the ones I have bought! :-)
Hookless is meant for tubeless tires only. If you only plan to run tubeless tires, you'll be ok. You can put a tube in it too for emergency scenarios and be fine, but the tire has to be tubeless specific.
@@TheBikeSauce Thanks. After reading about people having blowouts on hookless I decided not to risk it. Panaracer confirmed their TLC tyres are all fine. WTB confirmed their TCS tyres also. Still no word from Continental. I have returned the Terra Speeds and ordered some Gravel King SK+ instead. Thanks for your help.
Great video. Great information. Would you say that there aluminum version would be just as well built (strong, stays true) but just weighs more? Thanks
Ive tested their Mason x Hunt 4 Seasons and they're very reliable. Stayed true during testing, but a bit heavier and doesn't quite have the pep of the lighter carbon hoop
Hi. great content and definitely considering your recommendation for this wheelset. Although I have to say, I am not really a technical person when it comes to specs and details, so I was wondering if your HUNT 35 Carbon Gravel Disc X-Wide wheelset is compatible with diverge expert pro model? again, im just one of those who are not really into details but more of ride quality and i'm just worried that I might buy the wrong specs. Hoping you can advise me on this. Thanks!
Thanks for the great information. I was hesitant to pull the trigger on the Hunts, but I went for it in the end! I also have a 2021 Diverge (comp carbon, Blaze color) with stock build so I'm looking forward to this wheelset. What rotors did you put on? Not the standard solid Shimano that come stock. I'm still learning about disc brake options but it seems to me the rotors you are using would be lighter as well. Do they need special pads? Thanks for any assistance. Cheers -
Thanks! These are the stock rotors. In general, you just need to specify the mounting method (center lock or 6 bolt) and the diameter. Everything else is just marketing. Stock pads will work if there’s enough meat left on them
Thanks for the video. I have a 2021 E5 diverge and am thinking of new wheels too. Did you consider 650b wheelsets for the diverge. Would love to get your thoughts on 650b vs 700c on the diverge. Thanks.
I really considered the Hunt Mason x 650b wheels, but decided to go 700c in the end for the larger diameter. I suppose the thought is if you go 650b, you’ll run bigger tires so that the overall diameter is almost the same. The main benefit of going 650b is the option to run high volume tires, for added suspension and comfort. I really think the differences in rolling resistance and all out speed are a bit overblown and the average rider will be fine on either. STILL.. in all likelihood, I’ll probably end up getting a second set of 650b wheels to use as a more off-road setup. Haha
I have a Canyon Grail SL8 size X small so it came with 650b wheels. I'm wanting to invest in some carbon wheels. I ride 50/50 road and gravel, and want wheels that will help my gravel bike feel more like a road bike on the road and still be able to do the fullerton loop trail. I'm not sure what exact HUNT wheels I should get and what will actually fit. can you please help me decide?
Nice review, thanks. I wonder if any of the companies made wider rims like the 3T Discus 45 40 with a 29mm internal width? For a semi-aero gravel wheelset, I would think narrow rims will still give a lightbulb effect to the tire the there could be handling issues in strong cross winds.
Yea I think ppl are placing more emphasis on internal width these days. (Thankfully) aero considerations are rather late to the all-road genre, but it’s definitely coming
@@TheBikeSauce if you don't know already, you should know that aero-gravel is utter nonsense. Beyond 32c, you'd be advised to AVOID any depth of rim, unless you like feeling terrified by the miss-handling of your bike. PLEASE CAN WE ALL AGREE TO STOP DANGEROUS MYTHS !!
Just started watching your videos. Very well done! Carefully crafted and well delivered. So, I have a 2017 Trek 520. Do you see any issues in using the HUNT 35 Carbon Gravel Disc X-Wide Wheelset on this bike. It has a max tire width of 38 mm.
Also have a set and love them. You mentioned in the video that running narrower tires would be suboptimal but for example if I wanted to put a pair of 32mm road tires on these rims what would be the downside?
No downside on 32s I think. Going too narrow a tire on a wide rim tends to stretch the tire out such that the sidewalls are no longer vertical, and that’s not as good for handling and damping characteristics. Too narrow and you run the risk of the tire bead separating from the hook and deflating. Hunt claims that you’re ok down to 28mm on these wheels.
@@dondebois4844 Just to add to the last response. I am going to buy these exact wheels from hunt to put on a Diverge and i was doing my research over the last few days. I called Hunt in the UK and talked to them to get some advice on deciding between the Carbon Gravel 30 or 35 X wide wheels. I was interested in being able to put a 28 or 30c tire on them for road trips or trips abroad where i would be riding mostly road and still run a 38 or 40c most of the time at home. The representative from Hunt stated that the 28mm tire size is the lower limit of these wheels but also told me that they would work well with that size. He said that they would not recommend those sizes on their website if they did not work well and were not safe. In fact, he stated that a 28 or 30mm tire would not be adversely affected by shape distortion. He also said that performance handling and cornering would be great and not negatively affected. I would probably go no lower than a 30mm myself for a bit of comfort on the road but still maintaining speed. I'm sure that if your putting 32s on these wheels it would perform great. On the subject of tire shape distortion, the ENVE AR series have a 25mm IW and built for 28-32mm tires. The conversation regarding IW and tire size can be complicated with gravel bikes. I've wrote too much this morning...too much coffee. Cheers.
@@JaclynStLouis thanks for the leg work. Definitely good information. I wonder how much wider a 30 or a 32 would measure on these rims the 38s I have on them seem wider than 38
Thanks for the great reviews. I am considering purchasing a Diverge, but haven't got the chance to try one. My biggest concern is that the FutureShock will not fully lock out when sprinting on pavement, or climbing hard out of the saddle. Does the firmer settings on the shock really lock out the suspension or is there still some play when you are really wrestling the bars in a hard out of the saddle effort? Thank you!
I have the 1.5 so it’s not adjustable on the fly. However, with the medium weight spring, I don’t notice any bob in the bars. It mainly helps with the high frequency buzz from the road or trail. As far as I know, even on the 2.0, you can’t fully lock it out. Personally, my hardest efforts don’t lead me to feel I lost anything through the bars. When sprinting on pavement, the forces through the bars are mostly torsional, not axial, so there’s very little motion in the future shock during this type of sprint. The shock is most active when cruising over rough roads, and it’s pretty nice.
Haha that’s a trail bell to let hikers know you’re coming so you don’t scare them. It’s by timber I think and it’s switchable so you can turn it off when you don’t want to hear it. Perhaps another video is in order.. haha.
Have them and love them... Except the freewheel noise is... Lethal... Glad you shared it. I can only add that it is extremely loud. Like industry 9s loud
Great video, especially for those of us considering these wheels for a build. Since it’s been a couple of years since you posted this video, are they still holding up well?
Going strong. They’re my go to on the diverge. Had to replace bearings a couple times. I think the seals could be better and I think they ought to use a larger bearing, but for the price I can’t complain
I’ve got 2 videos on the process - one for the hub bearings and another for the freehub. Process is pretty simple, and hunt sent the replacement bearings at no charge (they’re pretty cheap anyways. On the order of 10’s of dollars)
Thanks so much. I’ll check out those videos. I’m a bigger rider and am considering these wheels for a Lynskey gravel build. I’m in the dusty West with lots of climbing in dry conditions. Thoughts these might be a good wheelset for that. Good job in your channel. Thanks a lot for taking the time to respond.
Thanks for a good review, Im thinking of getting a carbon wheels for my cheap bike. Hunt is definitely one of my choices. what kind of frame bag do you have? i think its perfect for my snacks.
Removal is typically as difficult as installation and will depend on the wheel tire combo. For this particular setup, swapping tires has been a breeze with both the panaracer GK and SK models
@@TheBikeSauce The reason I ask is because I watched a long term review of a Giant Revolt Advanced 0 which comes with with carbon wheels and the only complain was about the difficulty removing tires to add sealant or change tires...It would be a shame to be in that predicament.....Of course you can always get a different bike and change the wheels but the major difference is also the drive train group set. I am in between the Diverge and the Giant....
Ahh. Perhaps those SLR wheels are just a bit tighter than others then. Probably not a big deal unless you’ll be swapping tires all the time. I was also between the revolt and the diverge last year. Ultimately jumped on the diverge bandwagon
@@TheBikeSauce Way more Spesh dealers around than GIANT ones. I need to find a demo and ride the 2 bikes and see how they perform.....I hate the GIANT color though...Green.......axaxaxa....But you get a lot of bike for what you pay. Happy New Year to you and your family....I download a GPX of the Fullerton loop so I may go for it one day......With my fat bike..lol...
Ha nice! Sounds like you’re local in SoCal. All of the family of shops (la habra, Buena Park, Fullerton cyclery) are Giant dealers I believe. I actually demoed a Revolt advanced during a giant demo day last year on the Fullerton loop, so they’re available to test if you seek it out.
Yea, took me a while to find one that would fit. This one is Outer Shell Adventures small half frame bag. Fits with some minor modification to the bottle cages to maximize space. The bag itself is awesome, though compact. Fits phone, keys, gopro with mini tripod, snacks, and chesty mount, if that helps, ha!
Hey Bike Sauce dude, I just bought the same bicycle model you have and from previous experience with bikes and wheels, fully get what you are talking about with a wheel upgrade being probably the best bang for the buck upgrade we can make. So now I'm getting in line for a Hunt wheel set and am wondering if you had it to do all over again and were ordering wheels now, would you get the 35 Carbon wheels, or would you get the 42s? The aero advantage is of little importance to me but I think in the future I may want to push tire width to the limit of the bike and not sure the 35s can handle it. What do you think? Also, I really do not like loud wheel chatter while coasting, I would much prefer silent but will put up with it if I have to. Are these wheels loud? - thanks
Right on, thx for the feedback. I’d probably go with the 35s or even the 30s actually. Aero gravel is an insane concept to me and my average speed of 12-15mph. 😆 strong riders may see a marginal benefit at best. Also, be warned that these hubs are loud! There may a way to tone them down a bit by greasing the pawls, but haven’t experimented with that yet.
I have the 30's on my OPEN UP with 35mm Schwalbe G-Ones. I think they sound great and you don't really notice the noise after a while. Are the 35's really that much louder? They seem identical to the 30's in practically every aspect bar width. Noise as per the video sounded v similar. My friend has some Nich wheels (Thai company). Great wheels at cheap prices but they are whatvI call loud. Great review by the way. I am a big fan of Hunt's. I wanted the oil slick spokes but just missed the order date. May get them on the 650 B's that I order next.
Thanks for the review, I'm also considering these wheels with my Diverge! I believe I had the same DT540 wheels that came with your Diverge. Out of curiosity, did you get a chance to weight the wheels that came with your Diverge? (Like, after removing the brake rotors and cassette.) I tried to make some calculations on the weight of the stock wheels by weight my bike with the wheels and without it (and looking up specs on the rotors, cassette, and tires online) to determine the weight, but I don't think that's a fair comparison. Very curious how much lighter those Hunt wheels are compared to the stock ones. Thanks!
Hello Rey. I’ve made that exercise. 2kg of wheels… to heavy. I have a comp carbon diverge and I don’t understand specialized choice on this wheels. Now im thinking on 35 x wide by Hunt or Terra CL by Roval. More than 500€ difference between wheelset but, lifetime warranty and 200grs less on roval I don’t know if it worth the money. I’ve very tilted for Hunt 🤷🏻♂️
@@tditech I pre-ordered these Hunts for about 6 months and kept getting delayed. Totally understand because of the supply chain issues. I ended up buying a different carbon wheelset… though costing much more, they were available at the time. Been happy with them and a massive improvement over the stock set
And btw I ride gravel with my Giant XTC with STANS VALORS, and the loud NEO hub. No problem here. At least riders or anyone knows I am coming for safety and awareness.
Easy to purchase. Fulfillment times are clearly listed on the website based on wheel choice. US customers will pay duty on wheelsets over $800 IIRC. Costs may be up to $100-$150 in addition to Hunt's charge.
I’ve had Yoeleo carbon wheels on my Roubaix, and a mix or different stock and non stock alloys over the years. The Hunts are my ‘nicest’ wheels to date
@@TheBikeSauce Sounds good, I would be putting these on my Norco Search for now. I was curious about the hub but as you mentioned I believe it was a rebranded novatec with good engagement of 5deg.
Hunt 30 Carbon All-road rider here. Had them for two years and treated them horribly and yet they keep on working brilliantly. Everything you say in the video ditto.
Only heard good things. Funny you should ask; Mike at Locked In has a Q&A scheduled with Scribe wheels tomorrow (11/23/20) at around 5pst. Suggest you check it out. th-cam.com/users/LockedInPage
Skinnier tires are faster from a straight aerodynamics point, running a 40mm tire, vs a 28mm will have aero benefits, you'll have less rolling resistance with the fatter tire, rolling resistance is linear, while aero gains are exponential. I'm assuming you know all of this though.
So effectively these wheels are just rebranded chinese wheels. It would seem that you could most likely buy these type of wheels cheaper direct from a chinese company
Well yes and no, I suppose. The hubs are certainly rebranded, but the rims are designed in house and manufactured abroad (as are a majority of all carbon parts). Nonetheless, when you actually do a bit of shopping with the more reputable Chinese brands (Yoeleo, Light Bicycle, Farsports), you find that they aren't actually much cheaper.
catalogue product, aggressively marketed, overpriced. Cyclists need to stop being sheep. These wheels are NOT special and DO NOT represent good value. AVOID THEM !
@@TheBikeSauce yes. I DON'T go any faster but I DO get jerked sideways! No design of trailing edge can repair the disrupted airflow behind fatter tyres. Its an unsupported claim made by marketing department liars. The turbulence behind fatter tyres creates unpredictable break-away effects. ie non linear response to sidewind variation ie sudden lurching reactions to slight changes in wind direction. DONT BELIEVE THE HYPE.
Ok I’ll bite. So are you saying 23mm slicks and a shallow rim exhibit perfectly laminar flow, but a 38mm gravel knobby on a 35mm deep rim will cause so much turbulence that it will push you around side to side?
Not saying that. Purely practically, upto 50mm rims can reduce drag and give speed benefits without necessarily introducing too much sketchy handling (although there are some AWEFUL exceptions - section shape is crucial) but NOT if the tyre width is big. In summary - gravel-aero advantage doesn't exist, gravel-aero disadvantage definitely does. Please challenge marketing dept myths !
I’ll bite too :) Unless you’re a PRO cyclist, you’re not getting any “aero” benefits regardless, and even then, these are single digit incremental second gains over time. The aero hype is just that, marketing hype to get all of us to buy into aero BS sold by brands. So the Dura Ace, Fact11 carbon, hollowed cranks and the rest of the BS is just for weight weenies who are bored and want to show off the S-Works badge. I’ll smoke a weight warrior with his aero jersey on a 20 year old steel frame Cinelli any day. It’s the legs that do the work. But I digress. Now, there are *obvious* advantages to carbon wheels over alloy from increased strength, rigidity, rolling resistance, and some aerodynamic advantage when riding a 50mm vs. a 33mm wheel, for example - if conditions are perfect (I.e. you’re not getting hammered by a crosswind with your deep dish pizza wheels). To say that “these do not represent good value” however, is rubbish. Carbon wheels for $1000? Please show us a better carbon wheel for under $1500. So if you want carbon, the Hunt’s seem to be doing a great job and are also well received by everyday users (let’s forget the press and the recent pro tour sponsorship). Enve wheels at $3-4k per wheelset might not be a “good value” but Hunt seems to be hiring the right buttons. For the everyday cyclists (all of us), a carbon wheelset with a solid warranty at $1k is a bargain.
Because they were NOT MC parts
I couldn't provide the documentation she demanded.
The highest compliment ! Thx
I decided to buy this wheelset after watching your review. Just ordered one for my Canyon Grail. Thanks!
Fantastic! You’ll enjoy them I’m sure. Jealous of your Grail too!
i have the canyon grail as well and wanting to invest in these wheels.
@@rsusanto Thank you for the response! Which wheels did you buy? do you mind sharing the specs?

I have the same set sitting in my living room, just waiting on my gravel frame from Low! I find the freehub sound intoxicating. Thanks for the review.
Nice! Building frame up is the best!
I love the angry bees... Loud Pipes Save Lives! You sold me on these... I signed up for the newletter... This might just be my Christmas Present to myself! WEEEEEEE!!
I have the 50mm version in my 2018 Diverge. Owned Zipp 303 - Lightweight & Roval in the past. I'm happy with the Hunt.
Nice! So you went with standard road wheels from Hunt then? Any issues with durability in the chunky stuff?
You’re right, they’re hard to beat for the money
hey thanks for the great review. I had been flopping around on what set to buy and you really helped me settle on these.
Great choice. Did you go with the new hookless version?
Very thorough, thank you! If you’re looking for other bits to upgrade, I might mention that lately I’ve upgraded my stock rotors (the same that I see on your bike curently, 105 grade I believe) to XTR. Oh the difference in feel, modulation and power! Night and day. Cheers, keep it up :)
Great input! Will certainly put it on my todo. Perhaps a ‘scientific’ comparison in performance between the two?
@@TheBikeSauce It might be hard to quantify the feel, which is arguably qhat improved the most dramatically!
I just got these wheels and tires on a 2020 diverge aluminum after watching your previous video. Love them.
Nice! Congrats on the upgrade!
Thanks!
Love his channel. So densely packed with good info!
Nice! Those are the ones I was considering.
Just got this bike last week but I've been watching all your videos since. Thank you!!!
Great, congrats on NBD!

I have them on my Open Wide , with Rene Herse snoqualmie pass 44mm and Hurricane Ridge 42mm for winter ! Best Buy for money !!!!
Wow, what a setup! Holy grail
Thanks, as always great content, and production. You should have 10K subscribers on this channel!
Thanks Paul! Slow and steady wins the race.. 😆
just took delivery (from the UK for just $28 shipping) of Hunt's Aero (bladed spokes) 35 Carbon i19 x e25 wheelset. also in the box were extra spokes, (no spoke wrench), CLD lock rings, QR skewers (which cost $15/each), and TL valves. i did not know these were Novatec hubs however, they seem smooth, engaged quickly, and spun for like ever...despite the really annoying buzzy sound. paired these rims with Pirelli Cinaurato Hs, only one of which was a little tricky to seat. got them so to lighten up my Cinelli Gazetta Della Strada flat bar randonneur which is a lovely COLUMBUS Cromor Double Butted Steel frame but came equipped with 9-speed drive train and indestructible but heavy wheels.
Nice! Congrats! An update: as of last year, Hunt no longer uses a novatech hub and has started using hubs of their own design.
Excellent your review swung it for me, at the moment Hunt have a 20% discount in the UK for orders over £500.
Hunts are awesome. I ran Aero Superduras on my road bike for 4000 miles and they were true the entire time, mixed surface riding included.
I’m thinking about buying these since my gravel bike does dual duty these days, and the current 45mm tires are dogs in the flats in a headwind.
They sound absolutely great!!!
Just went to luft and put a pre-order in for the 30 deep Carbon all road wheels. Thanks for putting me on all this

Nice! They sound very similar. Would be curious to see a comparison too!
Have the 650B Adventure Carbon Disc and absolutely love them!
Nice!!
Nice! Solid line up
@@TheBikeSauce I'm trying to decide whether to change my Mavic Aksium discs on my aluminium winter road bike for a pair of Hunt's (with 28mm tyres).

Thanks for the video they are great looking wheels.
Thanks for watching!

Thx!
Thanks for a great review. This question may have been asked before, but are your bars on the Diverge stock standard? Or have you changed them? I'm just wondering what the specifications are. Thanks again.
Opinion on these vs the Winspace Lun wheels?
Great videos. But I'm wondering if carbon rims are worth it vs shallow alloy rims such as the Stans Crest, weight difference is minimal.
Tough to say. Weight is just one of a dozen different things to consider.
Nice! Wheel building is always fun. Brainstorm here anytime!

Sir can you recommend me for carbon wheels for gravel bike i plan to assemble a nice and light bike thank you very much
Hi. great content and definitely considering your recommendation for this wheelset.
(Thankfully) aero considerations are rather late to the all-road genre, but it’s definitely coming
no NO NO ! aero-gravel is a dangerous lie !
@@gregconti8036 Interesting. Do you have any links to tests that show that "beyond 32c, you'd be advised to AVOID any depth of rim"?
@@insquares yup
Just started watching your videos. Very well done! Carefully crafted and well delivered. So, I have a 2017 Trek 520. Do you see any issues in using the HUNT 35 Carbon Gravel Disc X-Wide Wheelset on this bike. It has a max tire width of 38 mm.
Don’t see any issues. Max tire size is usually reduced if you run fenders, which your bike is suited for.
Thanks for the quick response that's the information I was looking for
@@dondebois4844 Just to add to the last response.
Cheers.
Now THIS is some good stuff. Thx for engaging!
What is that thing on the left side of Your handlebar? Light? Please tell model/brand also😉 Thx
Haha that’s a trail bell to let hikers know you’re coming so you don’t scare them. It’s by timber I think and it’s switchable so you can turn it off when you don’t want to hear it. Perhaps another video is in order.. haha.
Hi Bike Sauce!
Great videos, I have enjoyed them all.
What is the weight of the stock rims on the diverge?
2065g stripped all the way down. Thanks for watching!

haha yea they're loud
is the weight limit for rider only or rider plus full setup?
How's the fitment with 38c gravelking slicks? Would the sidewalls be stretched out a bit? Because you said they recommend 40-45c tires
That’s the recommended ‘sweet spot,’ but the 38s fit just fine
I know I’m late to this video, but 264 pounds is only weirdly specific in those units, and is probably just 120kg translated to freedom units
I'm kinda torn between these and light bicycle's falcon pro. The falcon's cost about $150aud more with dt350 hubs. Worth the extra?
Never tried light bicycle, but always intrigued by them. Had good experiences with Yoeleo on the past though
Thanks a lot for the response. How hard of a job was it to replace the bearings? Was a set of new bearings expensive?
I’ve got 2 videos on the process - one for the hub bearings and another for the freehub. Process is pretty simple, and hunt sent the replacement bearings at no charge (they’re pretty cheap anyways. On the order of 10’s of dollars)
Thanks so much. I’ll check out those videos. I’m a bigger rider and am considering these wheels for a Lynskey gravel build. I’m in the dusty West with lots of climbing in dry conditions. Thoughts these might be a good wheelset for that. Good job in your channel. Thanks a lot for taking the time to respond.
In the case of an emergency, can you run tubes with those wheels?
Sure

how easy is to remove the tires after they are on? Some carbon rims are posing a great degree of difficulty when it comes to tire removal.
Hi, nice review!! the range is 28mm - 45mm ?
Not sure what the site states, but you could probably run a bit wider
where did u get your camo top tub bag? thanks
Outershell half frame bag
How do you like that frame bag. I found that all the frame bags I tried, don't fit will on my 52 frame. They all seem to block the front water bottle.
@@TheBikeSauce what minor modification to the bottle cages did you have to do?
Just elongated the mounting holes by drilling them out a bit so they can slide further downward, leaving a bit more space for the bag
Nice! I actually greased the pawls just a bit and the freehub has quieted down significantly
have you tried the zipp 303 firecrest? any comparisons?
I wish. They look really nice and a semi-affordable set from a high end brand. Still close to double what I paid for the Hunts though.
Can you do a video about your bike bags
Not a bad idea. Don’t have a ton of bags to review, but I could mentions what’s been working for me. Thx
Thanks!
Hey thx. Responding to your comment in the other video about this
@@neafevoc so far as I understood you bought the Hunt wheels right?
Now they are available 😍
@@tditech unfortunately not, it was over a year ago when I waited for them. I ended up with Enve AG25
Not bad for the price, this or Zipp 303s? Decions Decions 🤔
Haha. Can’t say. The hunts did go up in price recently, so maybe other brands are more comparable
And btw I ride gravel with my Giant XTC with STANS VALORS, and the loud NEO hub. No problem here. At least riders or anyone knows I am coming for safety and awareness.
Wheels and a trail bell in one!
How was the ease of buying these wheels? Duty fees? Etc especially during this pandemic
Easy to purchase. Fulfillment times are clearly listed on the website based on wheel choice. US customers will pay duty on wheelsets over $800 IIRC. Costs may be up to $100-$150 in addition to Hunt's charge.
Thanks for your review. Still good? :)
Daily workhorse since this video went up. Replaced bearing a couple times, but that’s it
Have you tried any other wheels or was this your first set of Carbons for a dropbar bike?
I’ve had Yoeleo carbon wheels on my Roubaix, and a mix or different stock and non stock alloys over the years. The Hunts are my ‘nicest’ wheels to date
@@TheBikeSauce Sounds good, I would be putting these on my Norco Search for now. I was curious about the hub but as you mentioned I believe it was a rebranded novatec with good engagement of 5deg.
Are the tires very difficult to remove once mounted?
Not really. Just break the bead like on any other setup
Where’s your bike shop?
My garage 😆
Are those wheels 700?
Hunt 30 Carbon All-road rider here. Had them for two years and treated them horribly and yet they keep on working brilliantly. Everything you say in the video ditto.
Real Weight ?
Has anyone heard of Scribe? They are based in Ireland. $1000 for a set of gravel carbon.
Only heard good things. Funny you should ask; Mike at Locked In has a Q&A scheduled with Scribe wheels tomorrow (11/23/20) at around 5pst. Suggest you check it out.

Skinnier tires are faster from a straight aerodynamics point, running a 40mm tire, vs a 28mm will have aero benefits, you'll have less rolling resistance with the fatter tire, rolling resistance is linear, while aero gains are exponential. I'm assuming you know all of this though.
Comfort and smoothness outweigh any marginal aero benefits unless you’re a pro. And once you go off-road, comfort is king
@@TheBikeSauce I'm a local pro. So for me road rides mean fast gravel means comfort.
fullerton loop?
Yup! My go to
Is that Fullerton loop? Haha
my local loop
Looks like Fullerton.
You know it!
I am surprised you dont build your own wheels, and save lots lots of money.
Family, 2 kids, full-time job leaves little room for hobbies like wheel building. I would definitely like to build more wheels some day.
the price on these came down so much!!!!!!!
Yea it’s a amazing! And the new hookless version will save you some too
@@TheBikeSauce Love it, TY for your very informative videos!
120kg isnt quite as specific as 264lb ;)
Ha, there you go. Others pointed that out as well. I just don’t think in terms of kg
That sound is odd.
catalogue product, aggressively marketed, overpriced. Cyclists need to stop being sheep. These wheels are NOT special and DO NOT represent good value. AVOID THEM !
Any first hand experience with them?
I’ll bite too :)
Unless you’re a PRO cyclist, you’re not getting any “aero” benefits regardless, and even then, these are single digit incremental second gains over time.
