    We did that flight to Saba from St Maarten 15 years ago. The first attempt had to be cancelled due to strong cross winds. At that time the pilots were allowed to do only one landing attempt. So, back to St Maarten, after 2h a second attempt which succeeded. Amazing short runway.

      Igual los pilotos que llegan a la pista mas corta del mundo deben tener gran experiencia anterior y varias miles de horas de vuelo

    • @andyowens5494
      @andyowens5494 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@106199615072003 The stall warning sounds if the aircraft is about to stall, so the pilots don't let the aircraft drop out of the sky - they can do something about it if they need to. In this case, they were landing,so didn't need to do anything. The fact that the warning sounded was an indication that they were flying at close to minimum airspeed, which is exactly what they need to do for a short-field landing - so they don't risk running off the end of the runway. It shows they knew their airspeed, and had it under control right down to touch-down; good piloting. If the conditions are less than perfect (cross-winds or gusts for example) they wouldn't want to fly that close to the limit, they would have a little higher airspeed for a safety margin: that's probably why you never heard it (those near ideal flying conditions probably don't occur there very often). I hope that answers your questions :)

      @@106199615072003 Ha ha :) Just remember - all pilots know what they are doing (more than most in the back), and do not want to die. They wouldn't do it if they thought there was any (significant) risk; thats what training teaches - being prepared to go around if it gets unstable, divert elsewhere if its not looking like it will be better next time..

    The planes are usually twin otters which are good for landing on short runways. The twin otters land on Saba using only half the runway there. Also, the pilots take care not to permit too much luggage. If you are on St. Maarten and want to take the 15 minute fun plane hop to Saba to enjoy the unforgettable beauty up on the mountain there and the friendly people (and tasty food!) (I hear the diving is amazing but have not yet tried it myself) but have a lot of luggage you can stay overnight on St. Maarten, enjoy the sandy beach there, and then take a ferry boat to Saba from there. The hike up to the top of Saba is not difficult at all, and toward the top is an enchanting rainforest that is the experience of a lifetime.

I should mention that unlike the video here, we flew over on a totally old, rickety plane. the cockpit was separated from the cabin by a shower curtain. the plane came to a full stop SUPER close to the cliff drop off at the end of the runway.

    as if landing there was not tricky enough, they did so with the sun in their eyes. Imagine yourself on the highway, behind the wheel of your car, at the end of the afternoon, when the sun is slowly setting on the horizon. For me, it´s already challenging just to drive. Now, imagine the same light conditions, behind the wheel of a giant flying machine of several tons, side winds maybe, with the responsibility of the lives of dozen of passengers at stake, a super short runway, with the sea awaiting you in case you miss, falling off a cliff, with the world watching you. I guess that´s why I am not a pilot I guess. I don´t think I have what it would take. I don´t think I would even want to be on the flight, let alone be the pilot.

      that’s true, only information. In general, you don’t need ATC. The purpose of ATC is flow, information and separation. When there is no ATC, Just tell the other traffic where you are and general rules applies. When there is a lot of traffic, or larger A/C. ATC enhances safety and flow. When pilots and controllers work together, it goes smooth!

    • @DiCola119
      @DiCola119 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The stall horn begins to sound several knots before the stall occurs. This is actually a good thing to hear when touching down because it means that you've used almost all available lift to keep the aircraft above the runway. Many people describe the best landing as one where the plane stalls the moment the wheels touch the runway.

    • @JorenAvi
      @JorenAvi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      True, it means you have the lowest possible airspeed. However, on a twin engine airplane the VMCA is really important. On the 330, on some take-offs the rotation speed is almost equal to VMCG/A. On of the pilots told me on the twin otter they fly VMCA on this approach. So, that’s something to consider.

    예수는 십자가에 피흘려 죽으시고 부활하셔서 그대의 죄와 사탄과 지옥 문제를 해결하셨습니다. 예수가 그대의 운명과 재앙과 미래
    문제를 해결하셨습니다. 그대가 예수를 믿으면 하나님의 자녀가 되며 천국의 모든 축복을 받아 누리게 됩니다. 예수를 믿고 영접하세요.
