  • Despite FDA and health Canada warnings that antipsychotics can be deadly to the elderly, nursing homes in Canada continue to use them--especially in BC. In a 16x9 investigation, two women tell the tales of their parents who they claim were drugged to death.

My dad died this way in a 'rehabilitation' & nursing facility in Ohio in May, 2013.

This is not correct. We are not allowed to use these unless we have POA approval.Frail and vulnerable she says. She needs to come in and watch them punch kick and and abuse other residents. These m eds are never used without purpose. It is news stories like these that prevent the abusive resident from receiving meds. No meds then they attack each other. These places are short staffed, she is not saying that her father probably had behavioural issues. Of course she didn't see him aggressive. These families are not there to see the behaviours.

ontnurse2 'These places are short staffed', which increases both behavioral issues & drugs being used to keep the maximum number of patients under control. So they probably need more staff -- that's the kind of thing this story is meant to bring up. The staff should be on the same page rather than becoming defensive.

ontnurse 2 I agree - I'm sick of nurses being blamed for poor care - I have been an aged care nurse for 37 years (in Australia) and I have seen things get worse in that time - increased duties, more paperwork, staff cuts. When there is an instance of a nurse/caregiver being abusive towards a resident people need to ask themselves "now, why would they be like that?" Try low morale , poor pay and conditions, heavy workload! Not an excuse I know, but a reason!

Most families don't come out of the wood work to be there to care for a love one until a lawyer talks $ with a lawsuit😞

it is true your speaking out of ignorance I know somebody who died while being locked up in the hospital because of COVID. Doctors kept him from his family he got to vocal for there convenience so they gave him chemical restraints. Lawsuits wrongful deaths happen all the time by the hand of doctors and psychiatrist. They are not heros they are demi villains for big pharma. They have big egos they medically gaslight. Resperidon ruined my life. I now have sexual issues and other neurological issues Wich persisted years on the drugs and continue still after that I did not have until being forced on that poison. It's all about greed and controll they all belong in prison

I work in a nursing home. The facts are this. Dementia is like being in hell. I have one old granny that is convinced that her entire family is dead, her sons, her daughters all dead. Even after phone calls to those family members she forgets them 15 minutes later and spends her days wailing that her family is all missing and dead. That's how she's living her "golden" years.
Old people die, it's what they do. Does an antipsychotic hasten that death? Yes. But does it make the patient comfortably numb so they're not writhing in a hell scape of their mind's creation? Yes.
If we as a culture would treat our elderly with the kindness we afford our pets and put them down when they start suffering we wouldn't need to dope them up. But until then, let's keep them drugged and sedated so that they are not spending their last years agitated, aggressive, and terrified.
