Cool alternative! And sphagnum moss is actually very renewable and sustainable. It grows on top of peat bogs and only takes about 5 years to reproduce. The peat moss that grows underneath sphagnum moss is the one that takes thousands of years and should not be harvested for houseplants. Sphagnum moss =/= peat moss
Thank you! I agree 100% about Sphagnum moss, it is not to be confused with peat moss. Have you seen my earlier video about why using moss is not such a hot idea? I talk a bit about that and the other reasons why moss is, to put it mildly, annoying. 👉 th-cam.com/video/d4GM7cn8BME/w-d-xo.html

It's a great substrate, and I used it for some orchids in the past, but ended up switching to sphagnum moss in the end for environmental reasons really. Be interesting to see how it does as a pole though. People should be mindful that when buying tree fern fiber, to try to get ones from New Zealand, as those from South America and parts of Asia are not always ethically harvested and there was little regulation as to where it was being sourced (sadly, many were cut down in rain forests, etc). Also be mindful that tree ferns do grow slowly - unlike moss which can have a turn around of a few years - so more people using it could result in pressure on the market which can have disastrous effects.
@@TheLecaQueen Tree fern fiber is a terrific substrate and growing medium and it is being used (again) a lot more now in plant culture, particularly in orchid culture (I grow species orchids as well as too many plants requiring moss poles - according to my husband at any rate lol). Decades ago, orchids were widely grown in tree fern fiber, as were a lot of plants that we'd buy in nurseries. Unfortunately, high demand meant that a lot of species of ferns in the America's and Asia are now endangered, as they would be cut down from native forests to meet market demand, so a lot of people switched to moss instead of the fiber. As with most things, we should be mindful of where we source our material. I don't use tree fern fiber any longer and haven't for over a decade now. How it's sourced in NZ for the most part is from private land where some wish to clear or remove vegetation and most of the time, they will use a helicopter to lift them out once they are cut down, much like they do with sphagnum moss to reduce damage to the land with heavy machinery. As I've noted, it is a terrific substrate and I'd rate it as one of the best as it takes a long time to break down. Here in the US, tree fern fiber is SO much more expensive than sphagnum moss and so I can’t let enough go to make an entire pole. I’d love to if I can find it cheaper.
Leca queen your microphone is faulty. It's like a buzzing high pitched sound when your speaking (mic on) but when it's sped up between cuts it goes away so it's deffo not the music track. If it's wireless it could be picking something up like a router / mobile phone / light fitting it's almost similar to the interference that flourecent tube lights emit or a power supply / charger

I know why you think that, however, leca is notorious for drying pretty quickly. Unless I want to use pumps to meek the leca moist, a leca pole just does not work, I have tried! Even using a wick does not work.
hey nora :) i want to give tree fern fiber a go. Can you roughly say what amount you used on that pole? I am wondering how long 5l/10l will last. And how is the pole doing so far?
nah! i use cocochips instead of the pricey sphag moss and been doing it for years and my plants are growing fine. I even wrap my poles with grafting tape to contain moisture as i have low humidity in my area. Plants are fine and leaves are bigger and taller. I hope these tree fern fibers are grown from a farm and not stolen from the mountains in tropical countries. They use to steal that from the mountains and chop both ends and turn it upside down and plant orchids in asia.
You have to stop and think where this tree fern moss comes from. Swathes of diminishing rainforest! The idea of our beautiful tree ferns being pushed through a shredder brings me to screaming tears. Please DON'T use this until you know its not from the ever decreasing Queensland rainforests. I beg you..... DON'T!!!! 😭🙏
Hello Patricia, I definitely encourage you to stay on the right side of the law and use what is legally available for you to use. Using Tree Fern Fibre is not illegal here and is available for use. Thank you for sharing this information. 🙂
I encourage people to use what is legally available. If Tree Fern Fibre is illegal or not available one can use other media in the poles such as coco chips, moss, potting mix and many others. Yes! Its not sustainable, they take long time tô grow. Here In brazil, its ilegal to harvest.
Please, explano the risk to nature of harvesting this fiber!
@@paksaoify Thank you!
Here in the US, tree fern fiber is SO much more expensive than sphagnum moss and so I can’t let enough go to make an entire pole. I’d love to if I can find it cheaper.
Why i can t use bark for orchids?
Pretty sure you can
Would love to see how one does without the plastic backing 🤔 I think I will give it a try myself! I love the color too! So much sleeker than the moss
It most certainly is. I might make one just for you
Are you still using these poles? If so can you show us an update. Like a minute or two.

Do you know the PH of TreeFern Fibre?
I have not checked it myself, they say it is pH neutral which is one of the reasons why it works great as a growing medium.
@The Leca Queen Perfect! That would be my only concern with using Tree Fern Fibre. Thank you for the video.
would love to see an update on this - how well the roots have grown into the fibre?
They have grown really well. I have done some updates on my Community tab. I put quick updates of things there. Please check it out.
Thanks for that comment. I did realise that during the edit but unfortunately with my meagre sound skills could not make it any better. Probably means a new microphone for me. Sorry about that. I had hoped it would not be too obvious.
I was not expecting you to have a child. In my mind, you are the mother of plant babies, not flesh babies. My mind is blown!😆
I have 3 gorgeous real human babies that keep me way more busy than the plants ever could! 15 year old son, and 13 and 7 year old girls. I love them to bits!
@@TheLecaQueen I bet you're the coolest mum in the neighbourhood. Cool hair, a thriving TH-cam channel, making time for them and whatnot. I wish you and your family all the joy!
Great product but very expensive.
How is your white princess going on the tree fern poles??
You can check it out in my latest video where I discuss tree fern fibre poles here:

I'm so curious how you made out! I'm thinking of trying Lee from Kill This Plant's PVC pipe moss pole design but I'm uncertain how that would work with the Tree Fern Fibre since it's so loose and airy.
How did you you find it as it dried?
you know what i was thinking? since you re using leca anyways... cant you just make a leca pole?
That is awesome 👌. Whatever works I say. If you check the description of this video, I give details about where the Tree fern fibre is sourced. Thanks
DON'T!!!! 😭🙏
Here In Brazil its ilegal tô use tree fern fiber, cause its endangered because people destroy the tree tô take the fiber.
Hello Patricia, I definitely encourage you to stay on the right side of the law and use what is legally available for you to use. Using Tree Fern Fibre is not illegal here and is available for use. Thank you for sharing this information. 🙂
i love tree fern fiber for poles but it is expensivvvvvveeeeeee... ive only made 1 pole because I'm rationing it 😂
I know what you mean. I have a lot of moss so I am going to make a hybrid moss-fibre pole and see how that works.
I cant afford it lol
Tree fern are not sustanable, here In Brasil is endangered specie. They take a long time tô grow
I encourage people to use what is legally available. If Tree Fern Fibre is illegal or not available one can use other media in the poles such as coco chips, moss, potting mix and many others. Check out the link I have provided in the pinned comment above that shows how the tree fern fibre I use is ethically sourced and harvested from private forests.
That stuff is rediculiously expensive. Anyone have a good supplier that I won't have to give my rent money to? lol
I hear you.
Just be careful because tree fern fiber is not that sustainable. It takes a lot of time to grow tree ferns where that is from. As long as the seller makes it sustainable, it should be good.
True, check out this video: th-cam.com/video/7xwxUlCU354/w-d-xo.html
They're cutting down trees so you can have tree fern fiber how is that sustainable that makes no sense what that is is the beautiful bottoms of gorgeous forests that they chopped up shame on everybody
Please grow a tree fern, dont use the fizer. Lets grow the tree fern, they can take cold winter
