Once Upon a Time in the West ( Italian: C'era una volta il West ) is a 1968 epic spaghetti Western film directed by Sergio Leone. The film stars Henry Fonda cast against type as the villain Frank, Charles Bronson as his nemesis "Harmonica", Jason Robards as the bandit Cheyenne and Claudia Cardinale as Jill, a newly-widowed homesteader with a past as a prostitute.
After making his American Civil War epic The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Leone had intended to retire from making Westerns, believing he had said all he wanted to say. He had come across the novel The Hoods by the pseudonymous 'Harry Grey', an autobiographical book based on the author's own experiences as a Jewish hood during Prohibition, and planned to adapt it into a film (this would eventually, seventeen years later, become his final film, Once Upon a Time in America). Leone though was offered only Westerns by the Hollywood studios. United Artists (who had produced the Dollars Trilogy) offered him the opportunity to make a film starring Charlton Heston, Kirk Douglas and Rock Hudson, but Leone refused. However, when Paramount offered Leone a generous budget along with access to Henry Fonda, his favorite actor with whom he had wanted to work for virtually all of his career, Leone accepted the offer.
Leone commissioned Bernardo Bertolucci and Dario Argento film critics, who later became directors to help him develop the film in late 1966. The men spent much of the following year watching and discussing numerous classic Westerns such as High Noon, The Iron Horse, The Comancheros, and The Searchers at Leone's house, and constructed a story made up almost entirely of "references" to American Westerns.
For Once Upon a Time in the West, Leone changed his approach over his earlier westerns. Whereas the "Dollars" films were quirky and up-tempo, a celebratory yet tongue-in-cheek parody of the icons of the wild west, Once upon a Time in the West is much slower in pace and sombre in theme.
The music was written by composer Ennio Morricone, Leone's regular collaborator, who wrote the score under Leone's direction before filming began. As in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, the haunting music contributes to the film's grandeur and, like the music for The Good the Bad and the Ugly, is considered one of Morricone's greatest compositions.
The film features leitmotifs that relate to each of the main characters (each with their own unique theme music) as well as to the spirit of the American West. It was Leone's desire to have the music available and played during filming. Leone had Morricone compose the score before shooting started and would play the music in the background for the actors on set.

Not just the best western ever made, I think it was the best film ever made. The actors and dialogue was brilliant and the music just stunning. No one will ever better this film.
your right.
Totally agree, fantastic film
Seem like the landscape in the past looked better than current times.
Different seasons
I love that song --"Man with a harmonica" awesome score !!!

I was looking for the music. I randomly came across this. Seen nothing like this before. Perfect.
the time, the effort, the research to put this together. wow. second only to the movie itself - which is a classic. i remember walking out of the theater after first seeing the film in 1968. it was just a stunningly complete experience. over the years i have watched it soooo many times because of all the attention to detail that was put into this... the direction, the acting, the casting, the editing, the music, the story... everything was timed so well that it is often still relivable as a movie experience. and... i have often wondered where it was filmed and the sets (other than the obvious Monument Valley, AZ stuff). sooo... thanks for the effort to add the dimensions of time to the sets, for finding and tying everything together.
i remember the first time i watch this film i was in the merchant navy and have now watch it so many times it is the best film ever made and the acting
is first class and the music is out of this world when i watch it, it fetches me to tears
It is just amazing what is done in post production in the movie industry
Great job and thanks
Best western of all time! And best movie music!
Haunting music and matching cinematography. I always feel sorrowful whenever I saw this film. One day , i will meet all these great artists in heaven and request them recreate this magic 🤞
finest western film ever made, superb video Herve well done, brilliant
All of Sergio's movies were great but this was the best
The GREATEST western ever made...wow, this surely is hallowed ground.
Thank you for taking us back in time..
Excelent video nice nice nice video ,, tanks very much
Excellent !!!!!!
Hasta que llegó su hora o había una vez en el oeste. Excelente siendo wester no si diga mis favoritas.
unbelievable, so much work for you, great result
Davvero eccezionale, bravissimo!
ahhhhhh..fantastico lavoro ..super vry very BRAVO...GREATH
Lieber Herve Attia. Ihr Video ist einfach unglaublich SUPER. DANKE.
This amazing effort keyed on so many elements, each of which were significant. To transport a "Spaghetti Western" to Monument Valley? That was a feat in itself. To interpret it in this manner is eye-opening. Kudo's. ~ S ~
great video, but the shots towards the sweetwater ranch in the scene of the mcbain massacre were obviously not shot in the western town with the street; it's just a precise reconstruction
The scene where Jill gets off the train and that most beautiful song kicks in... it always makes me cry
Yes, totally heartbreaking when in the context of the movie that she has no idea that her entire family has been massacred.

The score for this film by ennio morricone was brilliant it brings a tear to my eye every time I listen to it , and also a shout out to the guy who must have spent a lot of time matching these locations up brilliant thank you
@@jackwatsonepic626 couldnt have said it better
People and whole eras come and go, passing and vanishing in a moment like shadows; the rocks and the earth carry on in silence, as if mocking or perhaps just understanding and forgiving of the children for their ignorance and folly.
Epic posting Mr. Attia.
Unless two genes, Sergio and Ennio, surrounded by some of the greatest actors in the movie's history stop it forever
Aww this brought a tear to my eye, absolutely stunning work. Thank you for recapturing the magic of Leone's masterpiece.
Are you a fan? or know him in person?
Certainly, this is touching certain feelings !!
As a filmmaker I've got to give my ultimate respect for this amazing work!
This is incredible! I hope the people living there today are aware of the fact that this masterpiece was filmed over there
Quite sad actually. It's like tearing down monuments, destroying History. Then add the fact all the horses are deceased, actors are deceased, the director is deceased etc..A time of when it was alive and now it's gone. The memory of we what we once had is on film !
Life's a movie in itself. All things come and all things go.
Thank you for the video !
Why don't the people who fund the filming of movies set some money aside to "upkeep" some of the scenery in the movies they make?
I wonder if the bulding that are shown in this video are still in use today, as the video was shot 10 years ago now!
claudia cardinal is live!!

One of the best movies ever made! Love this western. I’ve watched it,must be 15 times. 🥰
Only 15 times!? Why the nerve of some people😝😛😜
Me 150 times at least. 🙏
each character has their own music. Such a Masterpiece!
500 plus, still counting.
What a wonderful job you did with this video! It was so cool to see these locations from probably the greatest western of all time all these years on. Thank you so much for the tremendous effort that must have gone into your video.
Wow, I have no idea how much painstaking research, field work, preparation and editing you must have done to produce this, Hervé. Magnificent job, bravo!
I agree.
SuspenduAuGaffa Could not agree more... superb filming... Herve deserves more recognition for his work

I totally agree with your comment
Hervé,
I am from Belgium and I have seen this film at least 5 times. There is something that attracks me in that film, perhaps 'something to do with death' ?
It is amazing how well you did the comparison, it is a pity to see that a lot have been changed in the meantime but yes that's live. This is a great tribute to the film.
Many thanks that you offers this to us !
Absolutely fantastic. Everytime I hear the music my body shivers. Probably
the best soundtrack music in history

Don't forget the direction of Sergio Leone, the real master

Hard to believe that when this film came out, it was a huge hit in many countries except the US where it was panned by critics. That should tell you something about US film critics.
There have been at least two film critics that have ALWAYS steered me in the right direction - by my doing the opposite of what ever they said.
It was a dud at the box office for the simple reason Paramount butchered it.By removing 45 minutes, what was left made no sense.
All the Leonni films where a masterclass in cinematography , at the time I think it brought out the insecurity of the American filmmakers and of course Ennio Morricone's unforgettable masterclass of music filmscores .
Well, European film critics are giving praise to 'Cuties', so there's that.

I stayed silently for a few minutes after watching this.....brought back memories of teen age. Great job, Herve.
That was nothing short of compelling. I watched as a kid and never knew how it was sinking into my subconcious. The music and story are woven like silk. This is an interesting angle on something in my heart. Fantastico
I cried everytime I see this movie, remembered the good old days with my beloved father who passed away years a go, this was his favourite movie, always watched this together with him..rest in peace dad..

Hey is it me or is the music in this movie some of the best of all time. It's beautiful enough to make a grown man cry.
Got to agree, I think gbu was better film but this music , as you say, the best film music of all time
@rudy lulung The man with the harmonica
My Dad passed away on 06-03-24. We had the funeral service yesterday, I had the funeral home play the musical score playing while photos of him and family were shown; so powerful RIP - John Howard Fisher

A haunting and moving tribute to one of the most haunting and powerful films ever made. Thank you!
This is a stunning piece of filming.I can see the work and effort that went into the planning of this piece. It pays unique homage to the set designers, actors, location searchers and the sound track, in a highly original way. It deserves it's own special Oscar, a film that gently reminds us that any film is a sum of all of it's parts. Also, it emphasises how balledic OUTITW was and how we, I suspect, miss this unique combination of talents.
Thanks for showing me how to make an original film.
There is one Rock in one of Thailand's island it called James Bond island and almost 20 million tourists a year go to see this Rock. Surprised?
If they have kept all this locations exactly the same as they were in the movie. Do you know how many million people a year would love to see these locations and take pictures and feel yes feel how it would feel to be in that time of life.
Perhaps not 20 millions like Thailand.
Definitely 200 millions of people and I was one of them who goes there 6 times a year. 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
My sentiments axactly
These shots were made on the Navajo Nation in the USA State of Arizona. The Navajo elders required all traces of the movie sets to be removed.
Awesome Herve! It took me about a half hour to watch this 11 minute piece of art. I kept pausing and rewinding over and over. Thank you so much.
Me too!
You're not alone.
This was simply spellbinding.
This is unreal. So this movie, the passage of time, an era, a history, a way of life that once was but will never be again, haunts you too.
It's sad to see there is nothing left of the Arc.....where the boy is holding up his brother. :(
This is incredible......Once Upon A Time In The West. THE greatest western ever filmed as well as a psychological masterpiece. Thanks so much for filming this.
I agree 100% !!!!
let's say is nr. 2 :), after good, bad and ugly ...
TheSalaboss both movies were made by sergio Leone, me 2, good bad ugly is so great
Congratulations on an impressive work of research and video editing. I've been fortunate enough to visit the Flagstone Site and several of the others a few times. Sadly for us movie buffs the former saloon was pretty well fenced off last time I visited. I was there when they were laying tarmac in the interior to improve housing of the sheep. I took a quick snap with a dodgy camera and I think that can be found on one of the fan sites. I also sneaked away with a fish-plate souvenir I found on the route of the railway into the Western Leone site. We were at Mini Hollywood/Oasys last month and I hope to visit Fort Bravo again in 4 weeks time, weather permitting as November is about the only month with any chance of rain in Tabernas. Also looking forward to receiving the new Book - Behind The Scenes of The Good, The Bad & The Ugly. Still a spaghetti "anorak" in my 75th year! Great to see such a high level on interest in possibly Leone and Morricone's finest work - Once Upon A Time In The West.
hey I just saw this for the first time and I got goosebumps...totally stunning work...
Hollywood is not capable of making movies anymore.
Never did
It was made by italian director and italian production...Hollywood had nothing to do with Leone's Masterpieces...sorry for you
ehm they never did, this is an italian production not an american
@CharlyRomeo2009 my point is the following one: Hollywood is not able to make a masterpiece like that...sorry for you...honey...
with the manipulating CIA in hollywood
This was the best western movie of all time.
plus the music, the depth of the orchestra for added measure
Italian Director...Italian Composer...I think we don't need to say anything else...
flashy5150 , I agree and possibly matched by , The good the bad and the ugly .
Nope
It still is the best westerrn ever made.
I’m a 72 year old....watched a ton of movies in my lifetime and have seen this movie at least 100 times. There’s no CGI, explosions or crazy car chases...just a great revenge plot with terrific actors, beautiful lush sets, the absolute best directing and cinematography and music score. It stands apart from the rest of the genre as the one and only tragic verismo western opera complete with Wagnerian leitmotifs. “The Quick And the Dead” was a poor man’s version of this classic. I’m glad that there’s so many other movie aficionados who appreciate it like I do.
The Most Beautiful film ever made in my personal opinion. It is poetry in motion. Everything about it is perfect. Thanks for posting all these locations on the film Herve. You did such a gr8 job. Sad to watch in a way. Wish it all still looked the same. Pulls at my heartstrings to tell you the truth. :)

Greatest Western ever filmed period. Fonda rules as the bad guy like no other.
An epic journey to match an epic western - the best western ever. This was a brilliant, engaging short film.
That '¡VIVA LEONE!' graffiti made my day.
I was looking for that coment He has been realy the genius.
You have helped keep Sergio Leone s' legacy , alive.
Have seen the movie at first in the age of 10- and huh, that video of yours is bonehard stuff for me. Am 41 yrs now, but my illusions get smashed to pieces... What an awful desillusion, especially what they made out of "Rancho Leone" and the road trough "Flagstone"- but well, at the least it still exists after now nearly 50 yrs... Thanks for the very, very masterly done video!!!
This was a remarkable visit to one of my favorite films. I've always wondered what the filming locations and sets looked like today. Very moving - and a technical tour de force. Time to watch the movie again! Thank you for the memories!
This epic masterpiece did not get the recognition it deserved here in the united states. Thanks for posting the then and now photos. I'll always love this movie.

Really enjoyed this. One of the best westerns ever made.
These actors are born when they are gone I feel very sad now actors don't know to act all graphic and all studio all shit flims they don't know how to hold the gun

Herve, you nailed it perfectly. I have never seen anything this good. I absolutely love to find locations. I grew up in Southern California back in the 50' and 60's. Almost everywhere you could see the film crews. I have spent hours in backed up traffic while they got the shot! I love this movie! Thank you!

Amazing work, thank you very much! Köszönjük! :)
Really good job!! It must have taken a lot of time to do this and find the right places where the film was shot!!! I know that the McBain scene was shot in Tavernas, Almeria, Spain.
