It is most certainly an amazing time to be a fan of these films, the releases are coming fast and furious, and so many classic films are arriving in the best versions we've ever seen. I'm thinking very seriously about picking up this Ti Lung David Chiang set just to check out one of the Shout boxes, although the Shaw Classic Vol 3 set looks pretty fantastic too. Hard to decide between those two!
Pretty sure the number listed on shout factory is the number of the first 600 releases that will include the poster... No way they sold almost 2500 sets already when it's a site exclusive.
I was going to order it this morning, but when I saw the cost including shipping I passed. At that time, it was saying they had 300+ copies still available.

I have SB Classics vol 1 (vol 2 is being delivered today) and the Brave Archer Collection - no complaints at all - great selection of films, the picture and audio quality is good, and the packaging is nice. If you're a SB freak like me, these are must-owns. The Lung/Chiang set was pricey, but I found a way to pay for it.
I think these Shout releases are quality .I have no idea if the cuts have had any work done on them, but the films on the first box look glorious. Their releae schedule is bonkers, volume 3 is out the month after the Ti Lung and David Chaing set and by the end of the year I reckon we will see volume 4. That will bring the number up to 60 plus films since April.
I've heard such conflicting reports on these sets, even in this comments section, it's really interesting. I'm very curious to check one out myself just to see what they're like. I'm a big fan of Ti Lung and David Chiang, and Chang Cheh was such a mad man, this might be the one that does it for me.

I wasn't expecting to love Shout's volume 1 box as much as I do, as its the period I don't like most, but there are some surprisingly good films in it, Bells of death is just outstanding. Chang Cheh is Shaw's best known director, overseeing a ridiculous number of films, so quality fluctuates. What is interesting to me is Shout aren't releasing any films by Lau Kar-leung, I know Arrow and 88 films have picked up a majority of them but even so it's a bit of an omission. Whether to buy or not is a matter of what you are after, I am a huge Shaw fan - I have nearly all of their wuxia films so I will always go for these releases over anything else. I live in Scotland, so it is a pain the only ship to the states, I am lucky that my sister outlaw still likes me so I can get these sets, even if it means I have to eat lentils every day for a month.
as a long time Shaw Brothers fan I have to buy em all - but my gripes with the Iron Triangle set is the price increase and making it a website only exclusive makes it difficult for our friends overseas. Either way some great movies in this set along with the other Shout Classic SB sets
yeah the price on this one is freaking insane. I'm very seriously considering picking it up because i want to check out at least one of these Shout sets and this is the most tempting to me so far, but damn, they need to calm down on the cost
@@hkcinemasociety this set (compared to some of the other Shout ones) has a bit more of the 'contemporary' movies so you may appreciate those more than the wuxia and kung fu stuff.... tho for me my favorite era is probably the later Venom mob stuff mostly cause that's what I watched on repeats all the time as a kid on TV
I bought most of my shaw brothers movies in the 70s alot came from yes asia go on there website now and there are not many now all out of print I have almost 3000 martial arts movies got a lot of them from my friend in Hong Kong but don't see him since China took over Hong Kong does anyone know where I can get any from I like the older style with swords and weapons 😅😅😅😅😅😅
I must have missed this video! Man, Shout has been killing it, because of course there’s now 4 volumes of SB classics plus the Brave Archer set plus the Ti Lung/David Chiang set. HOLY SHIT. All I have so far are SB Classics Vol 1 and Ti Lung/David Chiang. Only four more sets to go! YIKES At least I also have both volumes of Shawscope from Arrow and the entire 88 Films numbered SB Blu collection too. Gotta get all the Shaws! 🤓

I think you missed out on the Shaw Brothers Classics Volume 3 set that is out in October, so that is four expensive box sets from June to October, or in five months + the Brave Archer set in April. Being a compeltist(, I started pre-ordering the 88 Films Shaw Brothers Blurays with Chinese Boxer and did not start watching before I had gotten all of the previous ones), I don't think I am going to be able to buy Shout! Factory's Classics set. There are so many Hong Kong films I want to get, and I am buying the HK Blurays of some that are not available in UK/US editions, that I cannot really justify to myself spending that much money on the Shaw Classics sets. I have no idea what they are doing with the release schedule they have set, it just makes zero sense to me to release expensive box sets every other month. But, then again, maybe they are not that bothered with them selling? Last I checked the Brave Archer set was still a way from selling the 2000 copies they have for sale. I would really love to know how many copies of the Shaw Classics sets have been made, and if there will be second pressings of them. I don't remember them being advertised as limited editions.
I honestly didn't see Vol 3 listed on the Shout website when I did this video last week. I somehow completely missed that one. Some pretty good movies in that set, as well. Regarding the release schedule, one theory I've heard is they got a limited time license, so they have to get everything out before that time expires. That's just a theory though, I honestly have no idea why they're releasing so many movies so quickly. I agree it's a really tough time for the average fan who isn't rolling in money, there's just too much coming out. I was actually put in touch with the PR person at Shout who handled their Jackie Chan box sets and the most they were willing to send me was press releases, and on the same day the press releases were posted publicly on social media, so it wasn't particularly helpful. No disrepsect to them, they don't need me to promote their releases, they're doing fine, and they were perfectly nice and police with me, but I got the impression they're not at all interested. Now, to be fair, I never do ask for free copies of movies, because that feels a little bit presumptous to me. Whenever I reach out to labels, I tell them I'd love to promote their releases and would be willing to post and discuss anything they can send me. So maybe I need to be more agressive about it. but honestly, it's not the end of the world, I have too much stuff to review as it is now, withough 50 Shaw Bros movies flying at my face 🤣
I really like the releases of theirs I have, which are mostly horror. They do those amazing lavish releases of John Carpenter films, the Halloween series, the Friday the 13th set. But I haven't checked out any of the HK stuff yet.
I’m going to do a little research to see how the Shout sets differ from the Arrow sets. The Arrow sets seem to have a lot of exclusive bonus and commentary and elaborate packing.
Yeah the Arrow sets are loaded with bonus material, artwork for each film, detailed booklets, etc. From what I understand the Shout sets have basically no bonus material at all. That being said, I don't have time to watch bonus material most of the time anyway, so even though I'd rather have all the bells and whistles, practically speaking, it makes no difference to me. However, I'm just me, and most fans i suspect want all the bonus material.

Yes they are releasing these but at the bare bones minimum with high prices. Some only have one audio track. It's great they are releasing all these films but not doing it with care.
I'm on the fence about they way they're releasing these. I love lavish packaging and tons of bonus material as much as the next fan, but at the same time, there's so much coming out right now, I basically never have time to watch bonus materail. If I weren't reviewing releases for TH-cam I don't think I'd ever watch another bonus feature again, I'd rather just spend my time watching movies. So, I get that it would be better to have these releases treated like the Arrow sets, but if I'm being total honest and pratical, it doesn't make that much of a difference to me.
I don't know for sure, because so many Shaw movies have come out in sets in the past year, but if Shout set is region a and arrow is releasing their sets in region a, I think it would be impossible for them to have repeats because they can't both have the license for the same film for the same region
I don't have any of these. I have very few Shout releases in general, mostly Halloween and John Carpenter and Friday the 13, but I do love those releases.
I don't think so, but there are so many movies released between the two labels i don't honestly know for sure. I think there are close to 75 movies between Shawscopes 1 and 2 and the five Shout sets announced thus far.
If you check out the Shout Factory website, they have everything listed by set. There are, I believe, five box sets currently for sale, with a total of something like 51 movies across them, and there's apparently at least one more coming out before the end of the year.
I don't have any of the Shout! Shaw Brothers sets. They really are mixed bags and they are all the Celestial remasters, as far as I know, no new work was done on them. If someone knows otherwise please correct me if I'm wrong. The Ti Lung/David Chiang set has got some bangers on it though and of course it's a limited, website only set. So a HUGE fuck you to Shout! Factory for that as I have no cash and will likely miss out on it. The Brave Archer set is thankfully, not one I'm interested in as they represent some of the worst Venoms Mob stuff out there and Fu Sheng being super annoying. Daddy is cranky today...
I've heard that Shout has done some digital touching up on some of the movies they've put into their sets, but I don't think they're working with brand new top-of-the-line remasters. I don't know any of that for sure, though. They're doing a lot of website exclusives with these sets, it seems like. I wonder if that's because they want the highest price they can charge and they know Amazon etc will drop the price forcing them to do the same and the profit margin won't be as high? I'd be interested to know the rationale behind the decision. Don't be cranky daddy!

I was going to order the Ti Lung/David Chiang set this morning, but with shipping it was around $270. And I'm not sure if that was U.S. or Canadian dollars. Either way I justify spending that amount of money. I did get the Classic sets, with #2 arriving last week and I'll order #3 later.

That's super high to me even though it's a ton of movies. But since it's a website exclusive, they don't really have much reason to bring the price down because they won't be creating any competition by allowing sellers like Amazon to low ball their own webstore.

Shaw Brothers Classics Vol 3 could be where they start to lose me. One of the movies in the set (CLAN OF THE WHITE LOTUS) doesnt have the english dub and that dub is famous for a bunch of lines that were used in Wu Tang clan songs. I think there are a lot of people that are gonna buy that set expecting it to be there and they are going to be upset when they realize that its not. People may view these sets as incomplete and avoid future releases. I hope Shout fixes this but i don't think there's enough time.
I didn't even realize Vol 3 was coming out until today. There are some great movies in that set. I've seen about half of them and the ones I've seen are all bangers. I imagine the hardcore fans will definitely be upset about the dub not being on there, but I would guess a fair number of people buying the releases coming out these days are new fans or people who otherwise probably aren't too bothered with not getting the famous Wu Tang sampled dialogue. I'd be curious to see how people react to this knowledge.
The transfers of these movies are not good!! Seems screenfactory got these licenses want put them out asap!! And make money before superior overseas versions comes out!! With proper transfers..

I'm curious to check one of these sets out just to see what the deal is, and the Ti Lung David Chiang set seems like a good place to start. I love Ti Lung, big fan of David Chiang, Chang Cheh was a madman, and there are some great films in here.

@@ilkvomit88 I believe it says on the Shout website that they're using masters provided by Celestial, so they're definitely not getting access to original materials and scanning and remastering anything themselves. but I have no idea what the quality of the material is provided by Celestial. I'd be curious to know what they're working with.

It's a good year for these releases but I'm still waiting on Chinese Ghost Trilogy. Not going to hold my breath. But it's on my wishlist

I'm jealous of everyone seeing Enter the Dragon in theaters. I watched the Blu-ray this week to celebrate the 50th anniversar,y it was my first time seeing that movie in 20 years and it was definitely a revelatory experience for me.
Yes they are releasing these but at the bare bones minimum with high prices. Some only have one audio track. It's great they are releasing all these films but not doing it with care.
I'm on the fence about they way they're releasing these. I love lavish packaging and tons of bonus material as much as the next fan, but at the same time, there's so much coming out right now, I basically never have time to watch bonus materail. If I weren't reviewing releases for TH-cam I don't think I'd ever watch another bonus feature again, I'd rather just spend my time watching movies. So, I get that it would be better to have these releases treated like the Arrow sets, but if I'm being total honest and pratical, it doesn't make that much of a difference to me.

Are these boxed sets have repeats of the other shaw brothers sets?? If so that could be a problem.
I don't know for sure, because so many Shaw movies have come out in sets in the past year, but if Shout set is region a and arrow is releasing their sets in region a, I think it would be impossible for them to have repeats because they can't both have the license for the same film for the same region

I don't have any of these. I have very few Shout releases in general, mostly Halloween and John Carpenter and Friday the 13, but I do love those releases.

I don't think so, but there are so many movies released between the two labels i don't honestly know for sure. I think there are close to 75 movies between Shawscopes 1 and 2 and the five Shout sets announced thus far.

If you check out the Shout Factory website, they have everything listed by set. There are, I believe, five box sets currently for sale, with a total of something like 51 movies across them, and there's apparently at least one more coming out before the end of the year.

As per the Shout website, each movie will have a Mandarin audio track and an English audio track, so it looks like yes
I don't have any of the Shout! Shaw Brothers sets. They really are mixed bags and they are all the Celestial remasters, as far as I know, no new work was done on them. If someone knows otherwise please correct me if I'm wrong. The Ti Lung/David Chiang set has got some bangers on it though and of course it's a limited, website only set. So a HUGE fuck you to Shout! Factory for that as I have no cash and will likely miss out on it. The Brave Archer set is thankfully, not one I'm interested in as they represent some of the worst Venoms Mob stuff out there and Fu Sheng being super annoying. Daddy is cranky today...
I've heard that Shout has done some digital touching up on some of the movies they've put into their sets, but I don't think they're working with brand new top-of-the-line remasters. I don't know any of that for sure, though.
They're doing a lot of website exclusives with these sets, it seems like. I wonder if that's because they want the highest price they can charge and they know Amazon etc will drop the price forcing them to do the same and the profit margin won't be as high? I'd be interested to know the rationale behind the decision.

I was going to order the Ti Lung/David Chiang set this morning, but with shipping it was around $270. And I'm not sure if that was U.S. or Canadian dollars. Either way I justify spending that amount of money. I did get the Classic sets, with #2 arriving last week and I'll order #3 later.
@@Rando1975 Holy hell is that like $100 for shipping? I would imagine it's uS since it's a US company. I say it was listed at $179 on the website. That's super high to me even though it's a ton of movies. But since it's a website exclusive, they don't really have much reason to bring the price down because they won't be creating any competition by allowing sellers like Amazon to low ball their own webstore.

Shaw Brothers Classics Vol 3 could be where they start to lose me. One of the movies in the set (CLAN OF THE WHITE LOTUS) doesnt have the english dub and that dub is famous for a bunch of lines that were used in Wu Tang clan songs. I think there are a lot of people that are gonna buy that set expecting it to be there and they are going to be upset when they realize that its not. People may view these sets as incomplete and avoid future releases. I hope Shout fixes this but i don't think there's enough time.
I didn't even realize Vol 3 was coming out until today. There are some great movies in that set. I've seen about half of them and the ones I've seen are all bangers. I imagine the hardcore fans will definitely be upset about the dub not being on there, but I would guess a fair number of people buying the releases coming out these days are new fans or people who otherwise probably aren't too bothered with not getting the famous Wu Tang sampled dialogue. I'd be curious to see how people react to this knowledge.
The transfers of these movies are not good!! Seems screenfactory got these licenses want put them out asap!! And make money before superior overseas versions comes out!! With proper transfers..
I've heard conflicting accounts on this, some people have told me they look great, others have told me they're disappointed. I'm curious to check one of these sets out just to see what the deal is, and the Ti Lung David Chiang set seems like a good place to start. I love Ti Lung, big fan of David Chiang, Chang Cheh was a madman, and there are some great films in here.
That's totally whats happening here . . With as quick as these are coming out there's no way in hell they are restoring every single movie that comes out in every set. They are NOT vinegar syndrome
@@ilkvomit88 I believe it says on the Shout website that they're using masters provided by Celestial, so they're definitely not getting access to original materials and scanning and remastering anything themselves. but I have no idea what the quality of the material is provided by Celestial. I'd be curious to know what they're working with.

Lazy releases w more than half not giving the English Dub options🤦🏻♂️ these are SB flicks, who doesn't wanna be able to watch the Eng Dub versions, all those who jumped the gun and ordered wo looking into I'm sure are gonna act like they don't care, Shout needs to pass the torch to a company who will do these titles justice Arrow or 88
